WOLF PACK LAYUPS

Nevada will look to go 3-0 for the first time under head coach Eric Mussleman. This season is the second time that Musselman has gotten the Wolf Pack off to a 2-0 start with the first time coming in his first year in Reno.

Musselman was on SCU head coach Herb Sendek’s staff for two seasons at Arizona State.

Nevada has four players averaging double figures with two scoring 20 or more points per game; Caleb Martin (25 ppg), Jordan Caroline (20.5 ppg), Cody Martin (14 ppg) and Lindsey Drew (10 ppg).

Caroline is averaging a double-double 25 points and 10 rebounds per game. The junior posted his 15th career double-double in the win over Rhode Isand finishing with 28 points and 12 rebounds which were both game highs.

Nevada first two wins of the season came against teams projected to win conference titles; Idaho in the Big Sky and Rhode Island the Atlantic 10.

Nevada scored 88 points in each of hits first two games.

The Wolf Pack play back-to-back road games against West Coast Conference foes Santa Clara and Pacific this week.

The Pack play six if its next eight games away from Lawlor Events Center.

Five of the nine players that have seen action this season are playing for the first time in the Silver & Blue and are contributing 55.6 percent of the offense.

The Martin twins are averaging a combined 39 points per game nearly half of the team’s 88.

Caleb Martin has scored 26 and 24 points in the first two games off the bench. He was selected by the MW media as the 2017-18 preseason Newcomer of the Year.

Nevada’s two primary ballhandlers Cody Martin (4.5 apg) and Lindsey Drew (4.0 apg) are both averaging four or more assists per game. Drew has an 8.0 assist to turnover ratio and Cody Martin 2.25.

Nevada was picked by the Mountain West media to repeat as conference champions for the 2017-18 season. Last season the team was picked to finish second.

The 2016-17 Nevada men’s basketball team was the first in school history to win a Mountain West basketball title. The Wolf Pack won the regular season and tournament titles.

Last season was the first time in a decade that the Wolf Pack earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament. The Pack lost its opening round game 84-73 to Iowa State in Milwaukee.

Head Eric Musselman signed a new five-year contract after last season. The deal extends through the 2021-22 season.

Musselman is just the second coach in Wolf Pack history to lead his team to 24 wins in his first two seasons, joining Mark Fox in accom-plishing the feat.

Musselman led the Pack to back-to-back postseason appearances in his first two seasons, the 2017 NCAA Tournament and a 2016 CBI Championship. The CBI Championship was the first postseason title for a MW school.

Musselman has produced back-to-back 20 plus win seasons with 24 in 2016 and 28 in 2017. The 28 wins is tied for the second most in school history and the 24 is tied for seventh.

Caroline was the MW Tournament MVP and also earned MVP honors at the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic. The MW coaches and media named him the their second teams. He is a media 2017-18 preseason MW selection.

2017-18 OUTLOOKREVIEW In year two leading the program head coach Eric Musselman followed up a CBI Championship in his first season, with Mountain West regular season and tournament titles. The MW Tournament title earned Nevada its first trip to the NCAA Tournament in a de-cade giving coach Musselman a trifecta in just his second season. The Wolf Pack won 24 games in his first season and surpassed that with 28 in year two. Musselman was named the USBWA District VIII Coach of the Year. The Pack faithful rewarded the team as a school record average of 8,923 fans watched Nevada post a 13-1 home record. Several newcomers were key to Nevada’s success along with a corps of veterans. Transfer Jordan Caroline was named the MVP of the Mountain West Tournament and was a second-team MW coaches and media selection. Caroline scored 45 points and hit the game winner in overtime at New Mexico as the Pack rallied from 25-points down to win 105-104. Senior transfer Marcus Marshall, who led the team scoring at 19.7 points per game, earned first-team All-MW honors and MW Newcomer of the Year honors from the coaches and media. He was named to the MW All-Tournament team and to the USBWA Dis-trict VIII All-District team. D.J. Fenner joined the Pack’s 1,000 point club during the season and was named to the All-MW coaches second team and media third team. Sophomore Cameron Oliver also scored his 1000th point during the season. Oliver earned numerous honors during the season being named to the MW coaches defensive team and second team while the media selected him to their first team and as the confer-ence defensive player of the year. An All-MW Tournament selection for the second time, he was also named to the USBWA District VIII team. Oliver entered the NBA draft after his sophomore season. PREVIEW In his third season coach Musselman may finally have the pieces for his positionless system as the majority of the 11 active play-ers have the ability to play multiple positions. Although the Pack lost 67 (1861-of-2792) percent of its offense five transfers will join a solid nucleus that returns from last year. The 2017-18 team will have the most depth and versatility of Musselman’s three teams. In the MW preseason poll the media selected the Pack to repeat as conference champions. BACKCOURT The backcourt returns three-year starter Lindsey Drew along with sophomores Josh Hall and Charlie Tooley. Joining them are senior transfers Hallice Cooke and Kendall Stephens. Freshman walk-on John Jones is the fifth member of the group. Drew has done a little bit of everything in his time at Nevada. The 6-4 point guard averaged 5.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game his sophomore season. The 4.7 assists led the MW and his 164 total assists broke the Nevada sophomore record that was held by current New York Knicks guard Ramon Sessions. An outstanding defender he usually draws the opponent’s top backcourt scorer. The lanky Hall made nine starts as a freshman last season but did miss six games after suffering a concussion against San José State in the MW opener. An excellent defender, he improved his 3-point shooting over the summer. Similar to Drew he contributes in many ways averaging 3.7 points, 2.6 rebounds, and one assist a game. He netted 12 points in the MW Tournament title game vic-tory over Colorado State. Cooke and Stephens sat out last season under NCAA transfers rules but are ready to contribute in their final collegiate season. Cooke has the ability to play either point or shooting guard. Cooke earned honorable mention All-Pac 12 freshman honors at Or-egon State then spent a year at Iowa State. In 64 career games he has averaged 5.4 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. The 6-7 Stephens possess a smooth outside shooting touch and came to the Pack after three seasons at Purdue. His height allows him to play the one through four spots on the court. In his first season with the Boilermakers he was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team after averaging 8.4 points per game in conference action. His career scoring average is 7.9 points per game with a 36.2 shooting percentage from behind the arc. Tooley played in 16 games as a freshman walk-on last season. He connected on three of his four 3-point attempts to total nine points. His biggest shot of the season came at New Mexico when he nailed a 3-pointer that was integral in the Pack’s rally from 25 points down to win 105-104 in overtime. The 6-0 Jones is the son of associate head coach Johnny Jones. The younger Jones scored 1,300 points in his prep career at Uni-versity Laboratory School in Baton Rouge, La. A solid outside shooter he adds depth to the backcourt. FRONTCOURT Caroline and Elijah Foster are the two letter winners that return in the frontcourt. They will be joined by Caleb and Cody Martin along with graduate transfer Darien Williams. A preseason MW media selection, the 6-7 Caroline averaged 15 points and a team-high 9.2 rebounds last season. He was named

HEAD COACH ERIC MUSSELMAN (@EricPMusselman)

Building on his success from the first season, Musselman led his team to both a Mountain West regular season and tournament championship in year two, bringing home two trophies to Reno. Musselman’s team won 28 games in the 2016-17 season, tied for the second most in program history. Musselman signed a new five-year deal to coach at Nevada after last season. The deal extends through the 2021-22 season. The regular season title marked the first since the 2011-12 season and the tournament title was the first since 2005-06. With the tournament victory, the Pack also earned its first trip to the NCAA Championship since the 2006-07 season. Musselman became just the second coach in Wolf Pack history to lead his team to back-to-back 20 win seasons in his first two years, joining Mark Fox. The 2016-17 season marked the second consecutive year Musselman led his team to at least 24 wins. The success did not go unrecognized as Musselman was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year by the United States Basketball Writers Association. Under Musselman, several Wolf Pack players earned postseason honors in his second season. Senior Marcus Marshall was named to the All-Mountain West first team by both the conference coaches and media after breaking the Nevada single season record with 115 threes made, the second most in Mountain West history. Marshall was named the Newcomer of the Year in both polls. Sophomore Cameron Oliver earned first team honors from the Mountain West media and second team honors from the conference coaches. Fellow Sophomore Jordan Caroline earned second team honors in both polls, while senior D.J. Fenner earned second team honors from the coaches and third team honors from the media. In his first season at Nevada Musselman changed the culture of the men’s basketball team. Musselman led the Wolf Pack to a 24-14 record and the College Basketball Invitational Championship. The 85-82 overtime CBI Championship victory over Morehead State came on Apr. 1, marking the first time a Wolf Pack basketball team had played a game in the month of April. BleacherReport named him their Mountain West Coach of the Year. The 24 wins is the sixth most in school history and the 20-win season is the 13th in 102 years of Nevada basketball. He joined Mark Fox (2004-05) and David Carter (2008-09) as the third consecutive first-year coach to win 20 games leading Pack basketball team. Musselman also won his first collegiate game when the Pack defeated Coastal Carolina 73-56 in Hawaii. The Pack’s 15-win improvement from nine wins to 24 ranked the team as the sixth most improved NCAA I squad in the country. Three members of the Pack earned postseason honors under his direction. Senior Marqueze Coleman earned second-team All-MW honors from the coaches and media. Coleman was also named to the NABC District 17 team. Coleman’s 1098 career points ranks 21st in school history.

Fellow senior Tyron Criswell was selected as the MW Sixth Man of the Year by the conference media. Criswell ended his final campaign being named the MVP of the CBI. Freshman Cameron Oliver had one of the best seasons by a Pack freshman breaking the Nevada record, school freshman mark and MW freshman record with his 99 blocks. Oliver was selected as the Freshman of the Year by the MW media and to their All-MW second team. The conference coaches named him to their defensive team and third team. After back-to-back double-doubles at the MW Championships he was named to the All-MW Tournament team. He was the only player on the squad that did not play in the title game. Nevada is Musselman’s first collegiate head coaching position but he has been a head coach for seven professional teams, including two seasons with the Golden State Warriors (2002-04) and one with the Sacramento Kings (2006-07). He has won more than 500 games as a head coach with an overall winning percentage of .625 (566-340). The 52-year old Musselman spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach at power five schools Arizona State and LSU. In 2013 the Sun Devils advanced to the second round of the NIT and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2014. The 2015 Tiger squad also advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The 2013 ASU squad improved by 12 wins and advanced to postseason play for the first time in three years. He was promoted to associate head coach prior to the 2013-14 season. While at ASU, Musselman coached 2013 second-round NBA selection Carrick Felix, 2012-13 Pac-12 co-Freshman of the Year Jahii Carson and Jordan Bachynski who led the nation in blocks in 2013-14. In his only season at LSU, he coached two first-team All-SEC selections in Jarrell Martin and Jordan Mickey. Mickey was also selected to the SEC All-Defensive team. Musselman returned to Reno where he spent the 2010-11 season coaching the NBA D-Leagues Bighorns and led them to the only Western Conference title in franchise history. His father Bill was also an NBA head coach and they were the first father-son combination to become head coaches in the NBA. Bill also coached the Reno Bighorns of the CBA in 1978-79. Musselman’s first head coaching job came at the age of 23 when he was hired by the Rapid City

Thrillers of the Continental Basketball Association in 1989. He was the youngest coach in CBA history and the fastest to win 100 games. Musselman has served as a head coach in the CBA, the United States Basketball League (USBL) and the NBADL along with the two NBA head coaching stops. His teams have collected six division titles and have advanced to the postseason all seven times. He has coached 24 players that went on to play in the NBA. Five times he was named CBA all-star coach. After working as an assistant under Doc Rivers and Hall of Fame coach Chuck Daly, he was named the head coach of the Golden State Warriors in 2002. He led the Warriors to 38 wins, a team-high in more than 10 years, and was runner-up in the NBA Coach of Year voting. He also coached the Warriors during the 2003-04 season. Following a year as an assistant with the Memphis Grizzlies under Mike Fratello, he coached the Sacramento Kings for the 2006-07 season. Born in Ashland, Ohio he attended high school in Brecksville south of Cleveland. He attended the University of San Diego and helped the Toreros to a 24-6 record as a senior and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. USD lost in the first round to Auburn. While at USD he was named to the West Coast Conference All-Academic team three times and the Toreros played in two NCAA Tournaments. Musselman is married to Danyelle Sargent Musselman who has worked at ESPN, Fox Sports and the NFL Network as a broadcaster. Musselman has two sons Michael (21) and Matthew (16) and the couple has a daughter Mariah (7).
