TENNIS REPORT, BILL JONES" Welcome to fall everyone! Now we will be planning our holiday festivities all over the Club. We here in the tennis department want to wish everyone a happy holiday season. Speaking of seasons, we are now deep into our USTA League seasons for both the ladies and men’s teams. All of our teams are doing well, fighting for a spot in the state playoffs. We will update you on their progress as we head towards the finish line through this month. "" Take advantage of the cooler temps and come out and play some tennis with your friends and family."!

Tennis News

!Directors Tip of the Month ! Get a grip to get better. What we mean by this is: You should have multiple grips to play the right shot at the right time. Whether you are playing singles or doubles you will need more than one grip to play the right shot. Your grip can change two or three times in any rally based on the opponent or score. The two basic grips are: forehand, either eastern, semi-western or full western. Your volley or slice grip: continental. These should be used constantly while you are playing. Any grip changes should be made out of league season to work with and perfect it before using it in match play. Work on your grip change so you can work on your winning percentage!

Member of the Month This member has been playing tennis for a few years. She is a true die hard tennis player, who loves the game and is tearing through the competition. She bleeds State red and loves to wear HER color as much as possible. She has an infectious smile and a “one of a kind” laugh. She is a wonderful mother and wife to a tennis playing family. We are so proud of how far she has come in such a short period of time.

Do you know her? Can you guess who it is? It is none other than Mrs. Aira Underhill. Aira is a true competitor who is joyful when she comes out to play and believe me when I tell you she is a competitor. When she won her first league match she teared up with joy…that was priceless. Thank you Aira!

WELCOME BACK!!!!To help you enjoy your golf experience, we want to acquaint you with some of the customs and traditions which our members observe. Note that several of these have to do with speed of play, and that is because New Bern Golf & Country Club can be played comfortably in less than four hours.!Please join us in observing the following:!● All persons using the golf course must register with a member of the Professional Staff before commencing

play. ● The Open-Hole Rule simply stated: When an entire hole opens up ahead of your group, you have fallen

behind the reasonable pace of play and must ask the faster group behind you to play through, regardless of the number of players.

● Always be ready to play your next shot. When you reach the green, immediately fix your ball mark and be ready to play.!

PLEASE NOTE!● The use of cellular phones is permitted at New Bern Golf & Country Club. Please respect the time and tone in which you use them on the golf course. Keep in mind, not everyone wants to wait on your group while you’re talking or making a phone call on the course. Please switch your phone to vibrate mode before commencing play. If this privilege is abused, it may be revoked!

● Sand bottles are provided on all golf carts and are also available on #1 & #10 tee box. Filling divots is mandatory for all members and guests.!No other activities such as walking, jogging, bike riding, etc. are allowed on the golf course between

the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Golfers playing or practicing always have the right of way.!GOLF CARTS!

● Please observe the cart rules posted on the 1st and 10th tees. ● Carts are required to remain on the cart paths on all par-3. ● When carts are allowed on the golf course, please use the 90 degree rule. Also exit the fairway no closer to

the green than the green cart posts. ● A valid driver’s license is required in order to operate a golf cart.!

ATTIRE!NBGCC requires members and guests to observe its dress code while visiting the Club.!● All persons must wear appropriate golfing attire while on the golf course and practice areas. Tank tops and tee shirts are not considered proper attire anywhere on the golf course.

● Golf shirts must be tucked in at all times on the golf course and practice areas. ● Bermuda length shorts are permitted. ● Men’s shirts must have collars. Mock turtlenecks are considered collared shirts if the collar measures at least

an inch and a half. ● New Bern Golf & Country Club is a soft spike facility, metal spikes are prohibited.!

The Professional Staff at New Bern Golf & Country Club will gladly answer any questions you might have regarding our customs and traditions.

Golf NewsAROUND THE COURSE WITH TODD HOLT

I hope, as of this reading, everyone is out and enjoying your updated golf course. The golf course project went extremely well, however, we did run into some cloudy, cool weather during the last few weeks which hampered growth in some of the finished areas and detail areas that come with this type of full renovation. We will continue to amend and update all areas of the golf course, but I hope you find the course to be to your favor. As we go and grow in next season, the conditioning will only get better.!!The golf course maintenance will be set up for play for the enjoyment of our members and guests on a daily basis. In doing so, we will build towards Sundays being a day that the course will play at its maximum yardage from the blue tees. We were already doing this as our maintenance protocol, but now, with the variable teeing areas, I want to get this out to our membership. We will also strive to keep our pin position fair and challenging at the same time and with 100 percent of our greens healthy, we have several more options than in the past.!!The mulch areas on the golf course serve many purposes. The mulch will limit weeds, but also hold moisture and nutrients to increase the health of our trees in these regions. It also provides a place to blow and mulch leaves that can be utilized without burning or shredding dormant turf. The playability of these areas will get better with every mulching and it is our goal to have it become finer material that does not impede a golf shot, other than to give a wayward shot a place to rest that is beneficial to the environment and can be found with ease. As far as presentation, we will be treating these areas with our brown mulch dye and again it will get better and better.!!Please enjoy your golf course.!

according to their age. !After the completion of Stage Three, students will be able to play without an adult. !Testing: During a month there will be 3-4 testing periods for the players to advance stages. These tests will be scheduled weekly and will give the player the on course experience to improve their game. Anyone is allowed to caddie for the student when they are taking the test. Students must walk during the completion of the hole. They can be shuttled by cart to the next hole. !
