e-Nature Newsletter from Winding Trails - July 2016 Page 1 of 12 NEW BIRDHOUSE TRAIL ON POND TRAIL Hi Everyone, Part of our continuing conservation work is setting up educational exhibits. In June, we completed installation of the Birdhouse Trail. The trail is lined with a series of fourteen birdhouses with an informational display about the bird species that lives within the house. The signage at the start of the trail (shown above) explains that these houses help birds that would nest in a tree cavity. Roughly 85 species of birds make use of a snag, which is a dead or deteriorating tree, for their homes by excavating a hole, making use of a natural cavity created by decay, or using a hole made by another bird species. So, why put up a birdhouse if the birds would normally nest in a tree? Good question! The reason becomes clear when one thinks about what you do with that dead tree in your yard. You’d cut it down. I understand your reasons… it leans toward your house or the carpenter ants have taken up residence inside it or you’re concerned that limbs might break off and hit someone. Across New England, this happens so much that the suggested ratio of three snags or dead trees per forest acre no longer exists in many areas. As you walk along this trail, you’ll see birdhouses suited for Connecticut cavity-dwelling birds and get a feel of their size and shape. Above each house is a display with photos of the male and female birds along with their nest, eggs, and young. It also provides some information about the bird’s life cycle, diet, territory size, and lifespan. After your visit to the trail, if you decide a birdhouse might be a good addition to your yard, the Cornell NestWatch Project is the place to begin your journey to select the perfect house. Using their great online tool called “Right Bird – Right House”, one can obtain a list of birds based on your region and yard habitat. Click on the birds that interest you to download the birdhouse plan and learn about house placement. The link is http://nestwatch.org/learn/all-about- birdhouses/right-bird-right-house/. We would like to thank Tom Mitchell for volunteering to construct the houses based on the Cornell NestWatch plans. He made use of materials from the forest harvest conducted last fall that created the North Meadow fields. Look forward to seeing you out and about! Miss Judy

NEW BIRDHOUSE TRAIL ON POND TRAIL Hi Everyone,

Part of our continuing conservation work is setting up educational exhibits.

THURSDAY, JULY 28th TOM LEE – STORYTELLER At Amphitheater at Winding Trails, 50 Winding Trails Drive, Farmington, CT Winding Trails is pleased to present Tom Lee, a professional storyteller with twenty years of experience, for an evening of traditional stories, folktales, and myths that will get the entire family sitting on the edge of their seats. His repertoire is a rich trove of over 500 stories from cultures around the world; some are centuries old with a few that originated thousands of years ago. His interest in traditional stories began while he was working as a cook in a tiny fishing village in Scotland. In the United States, Tom has worked with children and adults of all ages. "When it comes to stories," he says, "children have taught me everything I know."

Tom is roster artist with The Connecticut Commission on Culture and was the featured storyteller at the 2014 National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, Tennessee. His stories during this performance will focus on animals and nature. This is a free program provided by donations made to the Trails Fund. Registration is required by three days prior to the event. Please register by Monday, July 25th at this link: https://www.windingtrails.org/register/?id=581

COMING NEXT MONTH

THURSDAY, AUGUST 11th CURIOUS CREATURES At Amphitheater at Winding Trails, 50 Winding Trails Drive, Farmington, CT Curious Creatures, established 30 years ago, is joining us again this summer. Their mission is to teach tolerance and respect for all animals that walk, crawl, or slither on the Earth and their habitats in an entertaining, yet educational and interactive way. Touching is encouraged whenever possible. Another goal is to inform those that attend about the need for researching exotic animals in order to make good decisions on the selection of family pets. The animals, which are primarily adopted, abandoned, or rescued exotic pets, are all captive bred, non-aggressive species that are used during the interaction at the show making for a unique, safe, and fun experience for all children, even the adult kind. The mixture of different reptiles, mammals, and insects provides something of interest for all. Registration is required by three days prior to the event. Please register by Monday, August 8th at this link: https://www.windingtrails.org/register/?id=582

NIGHT SKY WATCHING

FULL MOON INFORMATION The full moon for July is known as the Full Buck Moon because we begin to see the new growth of buck deer antlers during the month. The growing antlers are made of lots of water and some dry matter composed of 80% protein and 20% ash (primarily calcium and phosphorus). This is covered by “velvet” which is a hair-like membrane. By August, the antlers begin to harden and the composition changes to bone structure with a small amount of water. Young male fawns will begin to grow “buttons” at about 4 to 5 months of age. This month’s full moon will occur on Tuesday, July 26th at 6:57 p.m. EDT in the Hartford area.

OTHER OBSERVATIONS THIS MONTH INCLUDES:

On Monday, July 4th, NASA’s Juno spacecraft is scheduled to arrive at Jupiter after a five-year journey. It was launched on August 5th, 2011. It will have a polar orbit around the giant planet. The spacecraft is designed to study Jupiter’s atmosphere and magnetic field. It will remain in orbit until October 2017.

Organized and hosted by the Astronomical Society of Greater Hartford (ASGH), this is a great opportunity to view the sky through our beautiful 20" refractor. For parking, please note that we are NOT permitted to park at the observatory building on observatory hill. Please use Lot V on Vine Street

and walk up the hill to the observatory.

The session will be cancelled should the weather not permit observing, such as cloud cover, high wind, or threat of precipitation. Cancellation notices will be posted on their website by 6:00 p.m. the day of the observing event. For up-to-date details, please visit the http://www.asgh.org/observe.htm.

SPACE STATION OBSERVING NASA’s Spot the Station service gives you a list of upcoming sighting opportunities for thousands of locations worldwide, and will let you sign up to receive notices of opportunities in your email inbox or on your cell phone. The space station looks like a fast-moving plane in the sky and is bright enough that it can even be seen from the middle of a city! It can traverse the entire sky in 3 to 7 minutes. The notice gives the date, time, duration of visibility, and direction of travel. Enter in the town closest to your viewing location. Do note that there can be a series of dates during the year that it is not visible over Connecticut. The link for further information is http://spotthestation.nasa.gov.
