Chapter Directors’ Words of Wisdom

Heartland Wings July 2015 Page 2

We all, to some degree, take technology for granted. Everyone has a cell phone and email, and half a dozen

other ways to stay in contact with people. CB’s on motorcycles are almost like an 8-track player (don’t laugh,

Jim has one on one of his bikes). We rely on cell phones for so many things besides using as a phone. Making

telephone calls is probably one of the worst things a cell phone does. But we have them and use them all the

time. But what about when you can’t?

I went to lunch with a girlfriend the other day, and when I came home, Jim was out. I figured he was on a

motorcycle, since one was missing. I had a pretty good idea which way he went. But I didn’t know if he just left

or had been gone for several hours (my lunches with girlfriends tend to last until almost dinner time). If he had

just left, calling his cell phone would result in an unanswered call. What I was worried about was that he had

been gone for several hours, and had an accident or other situation where he couldn’t call me. I worry about that

a lot, even when he’s in the car, not just motorcycles. I know he also worries about me when I drive (not that

I’m a bad driver, am I?). He asks me to call when I get somewhere on a snowy day, or call when I’m leaving, so

he knows when to expect me. But when the weather’s nice and the road calls, a phone call or a note might not

be the first thing on your mind.

When pilots go for a flight, they must file a flight plan. As a motorcyclist, do you always file a ride plan? I

would say that 90% of the time Jim and I ride together, but that other 10%, he’s alone. I don’t worry about us

when we’re together, but we really should do a better job about leaving some word about what we’re doing and

where we’re going. We have taken care of finances and funeral plans, but I’m going to make a better effort to

leave a note when we go off on the bike. Technology is great, but a simple, old-school idea like paper and

pencil might be a life saver. I hope you will never have cause to have your loved ones need that information, but

I hope you will file a “ride plan” in the future.

Ride Safe

Meeting Minutes

Heartland Wings July 2015 Page 4

GWTA Chapter A

Meeting Minutes

Omaha Public Library-Millard Branch

June 3, 2015

The meeting was called to order by Chapter Director Karen Durand. There were 14 members present. Two

members wandered in late and missed the gifts of a $100 bill which were handed out by a mysterious stranger.

May’s meeting minutes were included in the June newsletter. A motion to accept the meeting minutes as

published was made, seconded and passed.

The Treasurer’s Report was presented by Mike Brush. We still have money and Mike will provide a formal

update next month once he deposits the fistfuls of cash people were handing him from past 50/50 events. A

motion was made, seconded and passed to accept the report.

Old Business:

Karen reviewed some of the planned activities. Sounds like a great kickoff to a great season.

o June 1 thru 30 - NE TA Grand Tour

o June 12th thru 13th – Region C Rally, “Meet You At The Fair” Grinnell, Iowa

o July 13-16 – Gold Rush XXVIII, Albuquerque, NM. Sign up by June 1st to avoid fare increase.

o Movie Night at the Brush’s sometime in August or September. Mike/Carol are making the

arrangements. Mike mentioned the movie, “Vanishing Point”. His thinking is a motorcycle movie

and a car movie (how about American Graffiti?)

New Business:

Hard Rock Casino, Sioux City, Iowa Ride. We spent some time discussing this ride which we are doing in

place of a Fun Run.

o Ride will be on Saturday, August 15th

.

o Depart from NW spot at 2:00 PM.

o Bump is preparing a flyer.

o Some folks may want to spend the night and have breakfast Sunday AM before heading home.

Others can leave when they run out of money.

5 of us took a field trip Saturday, May 30th

, to Rod’s Powersports in Lincoln to test ride the flavors of

GL1800s – Goldwing, FB6 & Valkyrie. We rode in some of that 0% precipitation and it was cool. Of

course, on the way home, it turned sunny and nice. Was still nice to get out.

Michael Sullivan passed on the word from Julie that we have 45 fb followers and 35 are non-members so

we do have some interest out there. She is suggesting more events posted to keep up interest.

Karen closed the meeting. We held a 50/50 drawing which somebody won.

Sad news from Minnesota

The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday in Minneapolis of a yeast infection

and traumatic complications from repeated pokes in the belly. He was 71.

Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin. Dozens of celebrities

turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack,

the California Raisins, Betty Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies, and Captain

Crunch. The gravesite was piled high with flours.

Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Doughboy as a

man who never knew how much he was kneaded.

Born and bread in Minnesota, Doughboy rose quickly in show business, but

his later life was filled with turnovers. He was not regarded as a very

smart cookie, wasting much of his dough on half-baked schemes. Despite

being a little flaky at times, he still was a crusty old man and served

as a positive roll model for millions.

Doughboy is survived by his wife, Play Dough, three kids: John Dough,

Jane Dough and Dosey Dough, plus they had one in the oven. He is also

survived by his elderly father, Pop Tart.

The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 min.

If you smiled while reading this, please rise to the occasion and pass it on

to someone having a crumby day and kneading a lift.

My Limericks

There once was a dog and a cat,

One was skinny, the other quite fat,

Little doggie was quicker, but the kitty was thicker,

So on little doggie he sat.

There once was a fellow named Dint,

Accused of robbing a mint,

Dint said he di’n’t do it, and the Judge said he knew it,

With evidence in doubt, the Judge threw the case out,

Said he had to rule that Dint di’n’t.

There once was a Captain named Ace,

Found a wormhole out in deep space,

Said, “I’m going through it!” & proceeded to do it,

But the hole strung him thin, as it sucked him right in,

And he never returned to home base.

There once was a fellow named Ted,

A cowboy by trade, it’s been said,

Made the cattle skedaddle, and died in the saddle,

Or so his tombstone read.

There once was a guy tall and handsome,

Who advertised various Brands, some,

But his lady, named Lil, told him she'd had her fill,

Left with half of his money, and then some.

There once was a quartet of females,

Who never quite managed their emails,

But their telephone calls, and their trips to the malls,

Kept them busy 'til Younkers had sales.

She has no time, to make it rhyme,

Or at least that's what Trudy said,

Though Norwegian she be,

From across the sea,

Henrik Ibsen, in sorrow, hangs his head.

When us gets up from a nap,

We find what we need is a lap,

But there's no one else here, to help sooth our fear,

So we have to settle for Pap-

50 States Ranked for Highest Motorcycle

Ownership: You Won't Guess Who's No. 2

By Blake Bos | February 16, 2014, The Motley Fool,

http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2014/02/16/50-states-ranked-for-highest-motorcycle-ownership.aspx

As of the most recent report by the Department of Transportation, there were 8,410,255 motorcycles registered in the United

States by private citizens and commercial organizations in 2011. To put this staggering number into perspective, out of every 36

people you meet in the U.S., one of them probably has a motorcycle. For ranking purposes, we won't be looking at total bikes in

a state, but rather people per motorcycle (the lower the number, the more common bikes are). So what states in America have

the most die-hard moto-enthusiasts?

3. Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain -- Iowa

Iowa is now home to the production of the famous Indian motorcycle. Image: WikiCommons

Iowa comes in third with 18 people for every motorcycle, beating the national average by 50%. In 2011 the state had 172,929

motorcycles registered, representing 2.1% of all motorcycles in America. Iowa is also home to production of Polaris' (NYSE:

PII ) Victory and Indian brands, and has the famous Iowa Grand Motorcycle Rally. This Midwest state's wide-open spaces make

for a perfect landscape for Polaris' and Harley-Davidson's (NYSE: HOG ) famous cruisers.

2. Live free or die -- New Hampshire

The 90-year-old Laconia Motorcycle Week. Image: WikiCommons

New Hampshire comes in second with 17 people for every motorcycle beating the national average by 53%. In 2011 the state

had 79,266 motorcycles registered, representing 0.94% of all motorcycles in America. New Hampshire also happens to be one

of 31 states without a mandatory helmet law.

The state is also home to Laconia Motorcycle Week, which dates back to the early 1900s and is one of the country’s oldest

rallies. Some sources quote attendance as high 300,000-400,000 bikers for this rally, and it is frequently ranked as one of the

best rallies in the country.

The combination of no helmets, great natural terrain, and the famous Laconia Motorcycle Week make New Hampshire a top

spot for motorcycle enthusiasts.

1. Under God the people rule -- South Dakota

416,272 riders made their way to Sturgis in 2011. Image: WikiCommons

South Dakota comes in first with 12 people for every motorcycle beating the national average by 66%. In 2011 the state had

69,284 motorcycles registered, representing 0.82% of all motorcycles in America. South Dakota is famous for the Sturgis

Motorcycle Rally, which attracted 467,338 riders in 2013.

With 77% of surveyed riders riding a Harley-Davidson, this event is crucial for Harley to not only show off its newest products,

but also to monitor its core customer. Investors in Polaris and Harley Davidson would do well to monitor how their brand's

present themselves at Sturgis to see if they're gaining market share or losing it.

Since South Dakota hosts the country's largest motorcycle rally and has a small population, it's no surprise this rather thinly

populated state takes the No. 1 spot.

Wrapping up the 50 top states

In 2011 the Department of Transportation began more accurately collecting data for states, so for the first time motorcycle

enthusiasts can truly see in which states they have the greatest chance of passing by a fellow rider. For the motorcycle
