“I don’t have a relationship with the gods,” she casually said. “I just pray to them when I need to.”

Many years ago, while living in Japan as a student missionary, I became good friends with one of my English students. Her name was Yuko. It was easy to like Yuko. She was outgoing and funny, and we connected immediately. She spoke English very well but wanted to improve her vocabulary. So our English lessons involved visiting museums and art galleries, shopping and eating delicious pastries in Japanese tea shops. During vacation breaks, we would travel all over the country, visiting iconic Japanese sites such as Mt. Fuji, ancient Kyoto, Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Yuko grew up practicing Shinto, the traditional religion of Japan. Shinto means “the way of the gods” and centers on kami, or nature spirits. These spirits or gods are various supernatural entities that represent all aspects of life. Kami can be elements of nature, forces in the universe, animals, spirits of ancient ancestors or even a value system.

On certain occasions, I would accompany Yuko to a Shinto temple and watch as she prayed to origami pieces of white paper hanging from above. This white paper symbolized kami and would represent various aspects of whatever she was praying for. If she were praying about a decision, the paper would represent the spirit of wisdom. If she were praying about a romantic relationship, it would represent the spirit of love and harmony.

Our attempts to understand each other’s faith traditions would often keep us up talking late

into the night. During one discussion, I asked what kind of relationship she had with kami. She was puzzled by my question because she never thought about a relationship with kami. I pressed her for an example of her prayers, what she said to them. She paused, trying to process what I was asking. Then she broke out laughing and said, “Oh, you are asking if I talk to kami like you and I talk, like friends.”

I was excited that we seemed to be making progress in our discussion. She then responded, “A relationship with kami is not necessary; it’s not like a friendship. Kami just exists. I pray because it is a temple ritual, and praying makes no real difference in my life.”

The disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray. They noticed that Jesus’ prayers were unlike what they saw in the synagogue. His prayers were not ritualistic tradition; they were not for show. Rather, Jesus would step away to pray and returned refreshed after being in the presence of the Father. Perhaps they wanted that difference in their own life; longing for something deeper than just a temple ritual. Perhaps they were seeking a relationship with God they never had. “Teach us how to pray,” they asked, because they were seeking something more.

Are your prayers a ritual, or are they a relationship?
