With summer rapidly winding to a close and school already beginning, it's time to start thinking about fall and all that comes with it. Aside from that nip in the air and the delicious promise of Thanksgiving, two major New Hope events lie ahead: Highland Day (Oct. 4) and, of course, our annual church camp (Oct. 17-19; registration opens today!).

==================================================== !Highland Day This annual family festival here in Howard County draws an estimated 3,000 people and takes place just a mile from the church, at the intersection of routes 216 and 108. It serves to celebrate the Highland, Md., community. The festivities usually include a parade and costume contest, among other attractions. There are also plenty of activities for kids (some of which we've provided in the two years New Hope has been involved!), who have enjoyed games, face painting, a fishing hole and a visit from the fire department in past years.!New Hope is one of dozens of exhibitors participating in the day, joining local businesses, artists and community groups. Our contributions have included Olympic-style contests, blow-up games, a health/massage table and crafts. But our involvement is about more than fun and games: It is a unique opportunity to introduce the community to our church, letting people know we are in the neighborhood — and that they are welcome anytime. !We rely heavily on volunteers to support New Hope's activities at Highland Day, so please consider helping us make the day a success! We will need helping hands for before, during and after the festival. Stop by the information table the next two Sabbaths and sign up to join the crew for this fun event!!New Hope Camp Get a dose of spiritual and physical exercise in one weekend! Don’t miss New Hope Camp, a time filled with incredible praise and worship, guided nature hikes and team-building activities for kids and adults. We’ve got fun planned for everyone — whether singles, couples or families — so be sure to reserve your spot. Camp registration begins TODAY!!The drive to Mt. Aetna Camp and Retreat Center, where New Hope Camp takes place, is nice and easy. Accommodations range from hotel-style rooms and nice cabins with bathrooms to campsites for those who want to sleep in tents. And food will be served from Friday night through Sunday morning in a beautiful dining-room setting. !Space is limited, so don’t wait to sign up! Find out more and register at lookingforachurch.org/camp or in the church lobby.!

Tragedy occurs all around us. A child dies after being left alone in a hot car, airplanes crash, teens commit suicide, acts of violence and terror take innocent lives, a young mother has a heart attack. When these things happen, it’s natural for us to ask why. When these tragedies happen to us, it is easy to be angry with God and blame Him.

The book of Job shows us there is nothing wrong with grieving when we experience hardship and suffering, as long as we continue to recognize God’s sovereignty instead of turning our backs on him. Job was considered faithful to God, but he showed extremely raw emotion.

When Job lost his family and everything he had, he did not hesitate to express his grief, dismay and perhaps even anger. Yet Job remained faithful, which resulted in Satan coming back to God and saying that if Job lost his health, he would definitely lose faith. So God allowed him to take Job’s health as long as he spared his life.

Job cried out in anguish, wishing he weren’t even alive. His friends supposedly came to comfort him by telling him his suffering is punishment for wrongdoing. It must have been hard, but Job never lost his faith in God. Job’s words indicated that he knew God was in charge and was worthy of praise even in the midst of suffering. He simply questioned why God would allow such suffering to happen to an innocent man.

Finally, he heard from God — but not in the form of answers. Rather, God answered his questions with a series of His own, underlining how little Job knew about God. Job had begun to question God’s

righteousness and love. God silenced those doubts but also made it clear that He owed no one an explanation for Job’s suffering.

Realizing that God hadn’t turned against him, Job was willing to accept that God had a reason for allowing him to suffer, even though God never revealed it. Job was relieved to discover God still cared about him and was with him through all he had endured. And the restoration of Job’s wealth, along with the blessing of a new family, demonstrated to Job that God had not abandoned him.

If you have ever felt like you’re less of a Christian because you’ve grieved in hard times, let the book of Job reassure you. Job wrestled with God throughout his struggles! He prayed for death, and he questioned why he even lived to adulthood. He showed real, raw emotion. But he’s considered faithful because he never turned his back on God. He went to God with his struggles and ultimately understood God in a way he never would have without those struggles.

Hardships and suffering are never fun. It is okay to grieve. But as you grieve, you can also look for glimmers of hope, signs that God is still sovereign over your life. As you turn to God with your struggles, you’ll grow closer to Him because God brings us hope when we’re hurting.
