Venetta Kalu

For the past five years, New Hope's Dance Restoration Ministry has served as yet another way we express our faith and worship God during our services. Venetta Kalu, who has led the praise-dancing team since June, shares more about this special ministry and what it brings to our worship service. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

What is the purpose of the Dance Restoration Ministry? The purpose of ministering in the dance in Praise and Worship is simply to give God the glory. Dance is meant to set the atmosphere for praise, worship and warfare; to usher in the Holy Spirit; to edify the body of Christ while communicating with the Holy Spirit; to open the doors of the heart and eyes so that the people may be healed, delivered and set free.

How did you get involved in the ministry — and why? The Holy Spirit awakened me to praise and worship dance in 1999 while I was engaged in my personal evening devotions. At that point, I had not been exposed to such a thing, but in that same year, someone started talking to me about dancing in the church and invited me to a concert. A few years later, I found a liturgical dance class and have been taking classes off and on for the past eight years. When I first came to New Hope in 2008, I saw the ladies dancing up front and knew I needed to be part of the ministry.

Why do you think this ministry is important? Dance was created for God's pleasure and to bring glory to His name. There are times when people come to church sad, depressed, stressed and hurting to the core of their being and can only sigh or groan...or don't know what to pray. The dance movements will reach us where we hurt. In these times, God our Father can use dance as a tool to revive, renew and reestablish people as we use our feet to trample upon the enemy of our souls.

How do you prepare for worship services each Sabbath? My co-leader, Joy Jordan, and I will separately choreograph sections of the songs during the week and put them together during rehearsals. However, we always invite the Holy Spirit's presence and advice for movements He desires, colors to wear and instruments to use for the songs. !What do you hope people get out of your performances each Sabbath? We like to call what we do ministering and not performing. We do more than entertain; we are here to be a visual representation of God's voice in the Earth. We are dancing preachers and/or evangelists. We hope, as people are ministered to, that they get set free and feel the peace, joy and rest of God, that they receive healing for their soul and even receive a miracle. My hope is that whatever is needed spiritually, they get it by us ministering to their spirit and soul.!How can one join New Hope Dance Restoration Ministry?? People — men or women — can email me at [email protected]. Ability, training, talent and gracefulness aren’t required; if you can walk, you can dance. And we do train you to minister. While technique is important, ultimately our heart attitude and surrender to the Lord will be the greatest determining factor. If you are 80, there is a place for you. Even if you are in a wheelchair, if you can move your arms, you can dance — and there is a place for you in this ministry.

!

She called it a teddy bear, but it was really a dog. It was loved and well used, dragged through more floors, grass and dirt than we want to remember. Its fur was matted down by years of drool. Both ears were gnarled and kinked from years of chewing. Its tail was sewn onto its side because the backside, thinned out by repeated mending, could no longer support anything. It was ugly, disgusting, unsanitary and it stank. We tried to throw it away many times, bribing her with newer, brighter stuffed animals. She would not have any of it, unable to comprehend that it was truly a nasty stuffed animal. Because “I love my teddy bear” she would say, drawing it closer to her chest.

As Christian believers, we say we serve God, but in reality, sometimes we can end up worshiping other gods. Every single day we are besieged with people and things calling for our attention, wanting to be the center of our lives. It is easy to let other things take priority over God. Things such as money, pleasure, food, career, media, possessions, friends, hobbies, sports and even self. Certain beliefs, hopes and philosophies can also be a god in our lives. Pretty soon these things will lose their luster and become ugly, disgusting and odorous objects in our lives. “But I love my pleasures,” we say, drawing them even closer to our chest, not even realizing how these things can enslave our soul.

Do you feel enslaved by the things of this world? Your career? Mortgage? Status? Or even busyness? Perhaps you have been

captured by a culture that has truly led you away from God? Perhaps you don’t even realize the stench of other gods in your life? You can change that today by asking God for a Mount Carmel experience in your life.

In today’s Bible lesson for families, Elijah found himself on Mount Carmel facing a people captured by a culture that led them away from the one true God.  “But we love our gods,” they responded. Elijah was tasked with the responsibility of proving that the God of Israel is the one true God once and for all. And sure enough, when God responded in an undeniably mighty and powerful way, the people turned back to Him.

“I am the Lord your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery. You must not have any other god but me” (Exodus 20:2-3).

You cannot be a slave and free at the same time.!!

Weekly Challenge What are the gods in your life? What changes do you need to make to stop serving them? Start living out those changes this week.!

For the Family As a family, go for a walk through a local mall or shopping center (or give each person a popular magazine) and look for things that people might worship other than God. Write down your observations and discuss the

different “gods” you saw. Ask your family members which ones they struggle with. Ask them to share how they will try to stay away from worshiping these gods. When you’re finished, have each person write a note of commitment. Place each family member’s note on his or her bedroom door as a reminder of that commitment.!
