Thought for the Week

Ann Roda PASTOR FOR FAMILIES

Last week, I went to the airport to pick up my nephew, a student at Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, Tenn. He was spending Thanksgiving week with us. I was a bit worried about recognizing him because the last time I saw him, he was a scrawny high school kid in high school. Now he was a college sophomore living independently, far from home.

As expected, the airport was busy with travelers trying to get ahead of the holiday rush. I checked the arrival monitors, which indicated the plane had landed. I strategically positioned myself at the exit point where I could easily see passengers as they arrived. We had agreed to meet here. Others crowded around me, and we all scanned the faces, anticipating one we could recognize.

When a large crowd of arrivals walked by, I thought I saw my nephew and shouted out his name a few times. But it was not him. Shortly afterward, a second wave of passengers passed by. Thinking I recognized him, I ran after a young man, waving my arms and calling after him. He was not my nephew.

I stood at my spot until there were no more passengers. I rechecked the monitors just to be sure his plane indeed had landed and that I was in the right concourse. I went to the information desk to confirm the arrivals, then ran down to baggage claim to see if he was there. I ran outside to the curb where the cars picked up passengers, then to an adjoining concourse. No nephew.

Bewildered, I returned to the exit point to wait. He was standing at our designated meeting point, waiting for me. He had been there for a while. I had been so busy looking for him that I missed him when he came.

More than 2,000 years ago, an entire nation anticipated the coming of the Messiah -- an anticipation that began in the Garden of Eden. Through the centuries, people looked for Him. Details were written in the Scriptures about where he would be born, to whom and why (Isaiah 7:14; 9:6-7; Micah 5:2). His coming was studied, discussed and dreamed about over and over again. Yet when the Messiah was born, people missed him because they were so busy looking for him with their own expectations and desires. If we are not careful, we can fall into the same trap of a Messiah born out of our expectations and wants; a Messiah there when we need Him and stored away He's inconvenient.

Who is your Messiah?

This Christmas season, step away from the busyness and spend some time getting to know the Messiah.
