What are you doing Oct. 17-19? We hope you'll join us for New Hope's fourth annual church camp! You don’t want to miss this weekend of fun, family and bonding with your church community. Registration opens at the end of this month; learn more about this exciting weekend from Georgina Straw, one of the many organizers behind this action-packed weekend. !Tell us about church camp.Church camp is a time to enjoy a beautiful weekend in western Maryland, with a choice of staying in cabins, lodge condos (limited) or camping. Our church is so huge, there are limited opportunities for developing relationships and having one-on-one time with each other as a community. This is a chance for us to get to know each other more.!When and where does camp take place this year? The camp is Oct. 17-19 — Friday evening through Sunday afternoon — at Mt. Aetna Camp and Retreat Center in Hagerstown, Md. !Who can attend?Anybody can attend! We have activities geared for singles, couples and families. We’ve done all kinds of seminars, from massages to stress-reduction and cooking classes; we have something for everybody. !About how many people attended last year?About 190 people attended last year, including people who came up on day passes. What activities are planned for the weekend? We’ve done s’mores and a bonfire and outdoor worship with a speaker and singers Friday evening. There are different activities

Saturday afternoon, including a hike up Black Rock. And Sunday, we generally do a football game on the field, horseback riding (for an extra fee) and activities for kids, including crafts and face painting.!But Saturday night is the highlight — a social time when we do games, karaoke for adults, movie and popcorn for kids. We had an epic Saturday night last year.!What should people look forward to this year? This year’s guest speaker is Dwain Esmond, vice president for the Review and Herald Publishing Association’s Editorial Division. And our own Manny Cruz will serve as emcee for the weekend.!Why should people go to camp this year?Sometimes it’s hard to meet new people unless you’re involved in a ministry or small group. Having this camp experience enhances old relationships and gives us opportunities to build new ones. This is just an awesome, spiritual weekend filled with fun activities that gives you the chance to make connections and lasting friendships — and several people have over the years we’ve done the camp. A bonus: You don’t have to cook. We serve five meals (dinner Friday, three meals Saturday, breakfast Sunday).

He was my tormentor. He teased and mocked me, stole my lunch and purposefully aimed the dodgeball at my feet so I would fall down. When I fell, it was often a clumsy and awkward kind of fall, and he would encourage the other kids to laugh at me. I did not like him and avoided him at all cost. But he pursued me and took every opportunity to single me out for ridicule. I began to fear and hate going to school. He made my second-grade experience unbearable.!

One day, after show-and-tell, my tormentor cried out that the item he brought to show us was missing. It was a special watch that belonged to his grandfather. It had a clear back so we could see all the little mechanical dials working as the seconds ticked by. No one had ever seen how a watch worked from the inside. It was the most popular show-and-tell item of the day, and everyone wanted to hold it. But now it was lost, and he was crying inconsolably.!

Everyone was assigned a small part of the room and told to search every inch of that section. I was given the area where all our coats and bags were hung from pegs attached to the wall. I diligently looked at every inch of the floor below the coats. Then something shiny caught my eye. It was the watch. It looked like it had fallen out of his coat pocket.!

As I kneeled there looking at it, I felt anger rise inside of me. He was a mean bully. He did not deserve to have his grandfather’s watch found. He deserved to suffer like I had suffered so many times from his actions. I put my hand over the watch and slid it behind a nearby cabinet. This was my revenge.!

For the rest of the afternoon, my tormentor was despondent, often putting his head down and crying softly. As I watched him, I began to regret what I had done. Guilt and shame overtook my vengeful feelings. I could no longer take it. So during recess, I took the watch from behind the cabinet and placed it on the floor beside his desk so it would be easily found. The joy on his face upon finding the watch could not match the joy I felt in my heart. Taking revenge did not feel as good as I thought it would.!

Loving and forgiving our enemies is hard. Is hating them any easier? Jesus said, “But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44).!
