Ask Michael Adu why you should sign up for Financial Peace University classes that start this fall, and he’ll tell you: It works.

Now in its third year at New Hope, the nine-week class teaches God's ways of handling money and presents biblical, practical steps to getting rid of debt and managing money wisely. The sessions, which Adu facilitates, are split between video teaching by Dave Ramsey and group discussion and hands-on activities. They cover such topics as emergency funds, retirement savings, college funding, ways to dump debt and real estate and mortgage.

Financial Peace University “helps change lives both financially and spiritually,” says Adu, who also serves on the church’s finance committee. “Teaching and facilitating the class has not only helped me stay the course to financial freedom but has been a great tool to being an irresistible influence within our community.”

Registration starts now. A free preview class is Sept. 10. Sign up at the information table in the lobby or online at lookingforachurch.org/fpu today!

Weekly ChallengeSpend some time with God, remembering those who have hurt you in the past. If you still need to forgive some of those people, ask God to help you do that.

He was my tormentor. He teased and mocked me, stole my lunch and purposefully aimed the dodgeball at my feet so I would fall down. When I fell, it was often a clumsy and awkward kind of fall, and he would encourage the other kids to laugh at me. I did not like him and avoided him at all cost. But he pursued me and took every opportunity to single me out for ridicule. I began to fear and hate going to school. He made my second-grade experience unbearable.

One day, after show-and-tell, my tormentor cried out that the item he brought to show us was missing. It was a special watch that belonged to his grandfather. It had a clear back so we could see all the little mechanical dials working as the seconds ticked by. No one had ever seen how a watch worked from the inside. It was the most popular show-and-tell item of the day, and everyone wanted to hold it. But now it was lost, and he was crying inconsolably.

Everyone was assigned a small part of the room and told to search every inch of that section. I was given the area where all our coats and bags were hung from pegs attached to the wall. I diligently looked at every inch of the floor below the coats. Then something shiny caught my eye. It was the watch. It looked like it had fallen out of his coat pocket.

As I kneeled there looking at it, I felt anger rise inside of me. He was a mean bully. He did not

deserve to have his grandfather’s watch found. He deserved to suffer like I had suffered so many times from his actions. I put my hand over the watch and slid it behind a nearby cabinet. This was my revenge.

For the rest of the afternoon, my tormentor was despondent, often putting his head down and crying softly. As I watched him, I began to regret what I had done. Guilt and shame overtook my vengeful feelings. I could no longer take it. So during recess, I took the watch from behind the cabinet and placed it on the floor beside his desk so it would be easily found. The joy on his face upon finding the watch could not match the joy I felt in my heart. Taking revenge did not feel as good as I thought it would.

Loving and forgiving our enemies is hard. Is hating them any easier? Jesus said, “But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44).
