Thanks, Highland Day Volunteers!By Laura Krause, Outreach Director

After weeks of planning, preparing and praying, New Hope showed up in a big way at this year’s Highland Day, a local community festival near our church.

We had a great turnout of about 40 welcoming and dedicated volunteers who served hundreds of our neighbors with free water, lemonade, games, face painting, massages and more!

To the volunteers who put hard work into each area and weathered the HOT sun for the day: THANK YOU for supporting New Hope in serving our closest neighbors.

The looks on people's faces as they walked through and realized everything was free were priceless. Thank you for making the day a success and for blessing the community around New Hope's corners.

Check out scenes from this fun- (and sun-) filled day (more online at facebook.com/newhopefulton).

A Chance to Serve: 2014 High School Mission Trip to Panama

This month, teens and their parents will have the chance to learn about a special opportunity to serve abroad: a mission trip to Panama.

The June 2014 trip will follow the journey a group of high school students from New Hope and Atholton churches took this summer.

Their mission during their action-packed week or so in the mountains of Panama: to help build a church, finish the walls and roof of a kitchen and install a water pump at an Adventist school without running water for the indigenous people of the Chiriquí province. Next summer's trip will continue to focus on building a place for people to gather and worship.

To New Hope teens (and parents) looking for a chance to serve in a special way — and a little (and safe!) adventure: Consider taking part in a new type of mission experience, using your talents and time to serve people in need in Central America.

If you missed this morning's information session, contact Keith Blair for details at 443-629-3686.

God’s Daily WordUse the following passages to explore additional biblical perspectives on wisdom.

SUNDAY Proverbs 1:1-7

MONDAY Proverbs 2:1-10

TUESDAY Proverbs 3:1-8

WEDNESDAY Proverbs 3:11-18

THURSDAY Proverbs 3:21-26

FRIDAY Proverbs 4:20-27

The touring bus strained uncomfortably as the driver jammed the clutch into a lower gear. We were driving up a really steep incline in the mountainous region northwest of Athens, Greece. It felt like we were driving straight up into the heavens. The bus was large and full, the road was narrow, the hairpin turns were gut-wrenching, and we were white-knuckled as we held on to our armrest. We would not look out the window at the breathtaking view because we did not want to be reminded that there were no guardrails. We were on our way to Delphi, considered a sacred site and a major center of worship for the ancient Greeks.

Delphi became the site for the Oracle of Delphi, a priestess of the Temple of Apollo who would mutter incomprehensible words that foretold the future. It was later discovered that natural hallucinogenic gas, seeping from cracks in the rocky surface, enabled the oracle to connect with the “spirit of the divine.” The ancient people of the Mediterranean had great faith in the oracle. No major decision was made without consulting her first. Greek and foreign dignitaries, heads of state and common folks made the pilgrimage to the Delphi sanctuary and paid great sums to hear a pronouncement from the oracle. It can be argued that the Oracle of Delphi was the most powerful woman of the ancient world.

The view at Delphi was spectacular. We were literally in the clouds as we moved among the ancient ruins of the temple, theater and the

tholos (a circular building). Porous stone and limestone have allowed for advanced decay of various structures, but many beautiful Doric columns and marble walls still stood. It was not hard to imagine the grandeur of the buildings and temples. At the museum, we viewed original and reproduced inscriptions of some of the oracle statements. We were surprised at how similar they were to the book of Proverbs.

As we sat on the stone row seats in the stadium, our professor pulled out his pocket Bible and turned to Proverbs. He began to read, “Their purpose is to teach people to live disciplined and successful lives, to help them do what is right, just and fair. Let the wise listen to these proverbs and become even wiser. Let those with understanding receive guidance. Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge...” (Proverbs 1:3, 5, 7).

At the place where it was believed wisdom was birthed, wisdom was actually never found. For in all of the 500 surviving oracle statements, not one said, “the fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge.”

Where do you go to find wisdom and knowledge?
