Our church facility is our primary meeting place, where we connect with God as a congregation and with one another. Whether playing host to classes, worship services, social gatherings, small group meetings or simple hallway chats before, during and after events, our building provides a place of safety, comfort and connection.

With your help this year, we can update our facility and create a space that is warm and inviting (and dry!).

Roof Renewal What if we fixed all the leaks in our roof and had it guaranteed for 25 years?

Our roof is over 20 years old and showing signs of needing major repair. After years of patching and trying to prolong its life, we had a new roof put on the main middle section of the building this fall, as well as a section of new roof and a new drain system over part of the worship center.

Hot Drink/Juice Bar Café What if we created a casual area where people could connect each Sabbath?

We need a place for people to chat and congregate before and after our worship services.

Worship Center, Hallway and Bathroom Updates What if we updated the look of our hallways, restrooms and worship center with new colors and artwork to create a more inviting atmosphere?

Goal: $69,000

Thanksgiving HappeningsNovember marks the beginning of New Hope's season of giving, and we've got a number of activities planned for the Thanksgiving holiday that will allow us to connect with — and serve — our neighbors, as well as our church and surrounding community.

Festival of Hope: Nov. 22 This year, we're aiming to donate 140 frozen turkeys, along with bags of groceries (grab a shopping list today!), to four area nonprofits that serve families in need. Bring your filled bags of food to the church starting the week of Nov. 17 and bring turkeys only on Nov. 22.

Want to contribute another way? Consider donating buttons or 4"x6" flags (see announcements) — or help decorate the church for the big day! Contact organizer Grace Brown at [email protected].

Young Adult Thanksgiving Potluck: Nov. 22 Plan to join New Hope Young Adults for a meal in Room 206. For details, email [email protected], or visit www.facebook.com/newhopeyoungadults.

Thanksgiving Dinner at Morningside Park Apartments: Nov. 26 We're serving a free Thanksgiving dinner to residents of Morningside Park Apartments in Jessup, Md.

To make this a success, we need volunteers! If you are willing to help with food preparation, setup, serving dinner, cleanup or making or donating dessert, contact Angie Bernard at 301-254-0300 by Nov. 22.

Most new cars come equipped with sophisticated computer systems that respond to our driving errors and communicate problems before we realize they exist. We put a lot of trust in the information our cars give us. We pay attention to all the warning lights and cautionary icons; we take it seriously when the gas gauge light turns red. We really don’t have to think too much about our cars anymore. They tell us what to do and when; they direct us where to go. Cars are specifically designed to keep us safe — if we let them inform, direct and guide us.

Our car tells us exactly how many miles we have left before we run out of gas. Its computing system does real-time calculations based on idle time, acceleration and topography. The mileage changes depending on driving conditions. That is why the car manual says to use the gas warning light, not the computer system, to determine when to get gas.

One morning, before leaving the house, the gas gauge light blinked brightly at the last bar from empty. But the computer said we had 25 miles of gas left. I haphazardly calculated that was enough for what I would do that day and decided to wait to fill the tank.

By late afternoon, I headed home. The warning light blinked ferociously, telling me my tank was empty. But the computer said I had four miles of gas left, just enough to get to the gas station near my home.

I did not anticipate the accident and resulting traffic jam that stood between me and the station. Idling in traffic, I watched the gas calculation decrease until it hit zero miles. Every caution light in the car came on, illuminating the car interior with the warning, “EMPTY! EMPTY! EMPTY!”

I sat in traffic for more than 30 minutes, expecting the car to give out with each passing second. It did not. I cautiously drove up an incline toward the gas station, yet the car did

not sputter. Finally reaching the station, I nervously waited behind five cars, yet my car did not peter out. With a prayer under my breath, I urged the car to the pump, and it stopped at the exact distance necessary from the nozzle.

My car was designed to give drivers like me every possible warning to prevent situations like this. But I chose to ignore it. I can’t say why. Perhaps I was feeling a bit adventurous or lazy; perhaps I was being foolish; or perhaps I thought I was smarter than the car.

The Bible tells us that God sees and knows everything (Job 28:24; Psalm 147:5). Everything. That is why God gives us cautionary signs and guides us to the path best for us. He has plans for our lives that are good. He prompts and encourages; invites and directs; loves and draws us to Him; and shows us over and over His way and His will.

How often do you ignore God’s cautionary signs? Do you snub God when He tries to direct your life?

Do you receive God’s plan and purpose for you with indifference? How often have you intentionally refused God’s prompting on your heart?

How simpler our lives would be if we just paid attention to God’s warning signs. How fulfilled we would feel if we would allow Him to direct our lives according to His plan and purpose. How content and at peace we would live if we would just stop fighting against the promptings He puts on our hearts.
