When I served on the Board of Trustees of my alma mater Hope College, previous President James Bultman would often say this about Hope: “We do many things well. Hope is a special place to be. But we’re never so good that we can’t be better.” I paid attention to those words and resonated to them also. In large measure, I would say the same thing about New Hope Church. There is much that God is doing among us that gladdens me and makes me grateful. But, I’m not content to rest on whatever laurels we may have gained and become complacent. We can always be better. With that in mind, I would like to encourage you to participate in our church climate survey. It’s a very simple three-question survey that can be done online at NewHopeWorship.com/Survey , or hard copies are available at the Welcome Center in the narthex of the church. All survey responses are anony- mous unless you request that a member of Consistory contact you, in which case you will be asked to leave your name and contact information. Lest you think these responses won’t be taken to heart, I want you to know that every response will be examined with the eye toward making New Hope better. In fact, I was perusing responses last evening and one caught my eye. The responder mentioned that they had left their contact information on the registration pad that we pass on Sunday mornings because we do make a point of saying that we like to contact first-time visitors. Much to my dismay, this person was not contacted. Since one of the first things I do on Sunday afternoons during my weekly “wrap-up” is to go through the registration pads, identify first time visitors and make a phone call or write an email if we have the information, I was disappointed in myself. Either I completely missed this visitor or it may have happened when I was away. In either case, I don’t think that reflects well on New Hope. Some would say that this is a small matter. I, however, am one who believes that the small things do matter. We are incredibly blessed at New Hope by all the good that is happening among us. When I served on the Board of Trustees of my alma mater Hope College,

previous President James Bultman would often say this about Hope: “We do

many things well. Hope is a special place to be. But we’re never so good that

we can’t be better.” I paid attention to those words and resonated to them also.

In large measure, I would say the same thing about New Hope Church.

There is much that God is doing among us that gladdens me and makes me

grateful. But, I’m not content to rest on whatever laurels we may have gained

and become complacent. We can always be better.

With that in mind, I would like to encourage you to participate in our church

climate survey. It’s a very simple three-question survey that can be done online

at NewHopeWorship.com/Survey, or hard copies are available at the

Welcome Center in the narthex of the church. All survey responses are anony-

mous unless you request that a member of Consistory contact you, in which

case you will be asked to leave your name and contact information.

Lest you think these responses won’t be taken to heart, I want you to know that

every response will be examined with the eye toward making New Hope better.

In fact, I was perusing responses last evening and one caught my eye. The

responder mentioned that they had left their contact information on the

registration pad that we pass on Sunday mornings because we do make a point

of saying that we like to contact first-time visitors. Much to my dismay, this

person was not contacted. Since one of the first things I do on Sunday

afternoons during my weekly “wrap-up” is to go through the registration pads,

identify first time visitors and make a phone call or write an email if we have the

information, I was disappointed in myself. Either I completely missed this visitor

or it may have happened when I was away. In either case, I don’t think that

reflects well on New Hope. Some would say that this is a small matter.

I, however, am one who believes that the small things do matter.

We are incredibly blessed at New Hope by all the good that is happening

among us. At the same time, we’re called by God to aspire to be even better as

we Reach people for Christ, Root people in Christ and Release people to serve

Christ.

Financial Planning Advice from the New Hope Endowment Fund

Everyone has the right to a Last Will & Testament, and regardless of how much you might own at death, it is

your right and responsibility to determine how your remaining assets should be distributed.

A will allows you to:

Provide for your spouse and other loved ones at your death; otherwise, the distribution of assets is left to

state law and the courts.

Determine the guardianship of any minor children.

Identify who will oversee the distribution of your estate.

Provide a charitable gift to New Hope Church through the New Hope Endowment Fund that will provide a

witness to your heirs about the importance of your Christian faith and the church in your life.

A will should always be drawn up by a qualified attorney familiar with your financial circumstances, family situa-

tion, and your wishes. Advice from an attorney and other professional advisors should be sought when consid-

ering charitable giving.

To learn more about the importance of having a will, contact the New Hope

Endowment Fund, which is designed to help church members create a lasting legacy

through planned gifts. The New Hope Endowment Board Members understand the

church, financial matters, and stewardship. To speak to one of our board members,

please call J.R. Kern at 614.582.6744.

Legacy giving is one faithful way of living on.

In Christ, The New Hope Endowment Fund

Administration and Finance Sandy Moberger, Church Administrator · [email protected] · 614.766.5445 x37

As we enter the month of Thanksgiving I feel the need to express my thanks to all of the people who consider

New Hope Church their home. Since part of my job (along with the deacons) is managing your gifts, I am

amazed at how seriously you take stewardship and its rewards. With faith we’ve managed to improve programs,

keep our facility maintained, support our many benevolences, and pay our staff, as we strive to do our most im-

portant work of Reaching, Rooting, and Releasing for Christ. This can not be accomplished without your help.

Over the past few months we have had to update the lighting in the entire sanctuary, repave the preschool end

of the parking lot, repair several compressors on our HVAC units, and service and repair our partitions in the Fel-

lowship Hall, among many other things. These expenditures are necessary but don't fill our hearts with satisfac-

tion. We are all aware of wanting to reach people in need both spiritually and financially. So as we strive to keep

those necessary expenses at a minimum, I want to highlight some of the places we have the privilege of assist-

ing: The Dublin Food Pantry, Habitat for Humanity, The Gather-

ing/Rela, Young Life, Youth for Christ, His Place, The CROP Walk,

The Columbus Tutoring Initiative, and the Miracle League. Your

gifts make a difference for countless people in many ways.

September 2014 Year to Date

Income $81,080 $659,790

Expenses $83,639 $699,625

Sunday School

The young men and women of New Hope continued to be lovingly taught about the book

of Genesis by their teachers and shepherds in October. The month of November is

focused primarily on the story of Joseph and how God has big plans for his people regard-

less of their circumstances! The 4th and 5th graders are moving rapidly through their

lessons, and covered Joseph and Moses in October. Check out the picture of their baby

Moses craft!

Kids WOW

Our Wednesday evening program for ages K through 5th grade got off to

a great start on October 15. We ate, sang, played, and learned about the

Israelites’ journey through the desert following their exodus from

Egypt. Through games, song, and crafts we will learn to trust God at all

times! Some fun dates coming up include our annual

support of the Pajama Project on November 12, where we have breakfast

for dinner and support a great cause!

Club 45

On October 16, Club 45 staffed the New Hope booth at the Dublin Spook-

tacular, passing out 7,000 pieces of candy and over 1,000 flyers advertising

the great things that God is doing in our church! Thanks to Heather Kern

and the adults who along with their children made this event a huge

success. We will meet at the church on November 9 at 5:15PM for our next

adventure.

Answers to Bible Trivia from page 6

1. He was too young (Jeremiah 1:6) 2. Potter (Jeremiah 18:2) 3. A field (Jeremiah 32:8)

4. Surrender to the Babylonians (Jeremiah 38:17) 5. The LORD’s steadfast love and mercies (Lamentations 3:22)

6. Nicodemus (John 3:1) 7. Martha (John 11:25) 8. Joseph of Arimathea (John 19:38) 9. Thomas (John 20:24)

10. “Do you love me?” (John 21:17)

Check out our new entrance to the preschool! The addition will help us

with heating costs, and as a bonus will give parents the opportunity to

drop off payments/paperwork after hours in a drop box (coming soon).

October was a very busy month at New Hope Preschool. Squier Photog-

raphy took our class photos, and we took a trip to Lehner’s Pumpkin

Farm and enjoyed a fun hayride and lots of other activities. We

conducted vision screenings and we can’t forget our Halloween

Parade! Thank you to all the special friends for helping pass out candy.

We recently renewed our Three-Star Step Up to Quality (SUTQ) rating

from the State of Ohio! The teachers and administration put in a lot of

extra time with all the additional paperwork and assessing that the state

requires for this designation. It is nice to be acknowledged for our hard

work and dedication to the children, but our reputation makes the

biggest impact on our enrollment.

Next month Columbus Speech & Hearing will be in to meet with our students. This evaluation provides the

parents with knowledge regarding their child’s development. We schedule this screening right before our Parent

Teacher Conferences, providing the teachers with one more assessment to use during our November

Conferences.

Our annual Turkey Trot fundraiser will be held on November 18 and 19. The children will trot, crawl, and dance

through the halls in their turkey hats as we raise money for our program.

I appreciate the continued support of the preschool. I feel very blessed to work with such a wonderful staff and

children, something that I am grateful for every day.

Year of the Bible

We only have two months left in the Year of the Bible. As of November 1 we’ve read

through 24 books in the Old Testament, 19 books in the New Testament, and 111

Psalms. Well done! If you are behind in the readings try and catch up as soon as you

can, or just pick up the readings from the current day. You can find current and

previous readings at NewHopeWorship.com/YOB. Whatever you do don’t give up!

And if you have questions don’t be afraid to ask Steve or me.

For the month of November, the prophets Ezekiel and Daniel will be our focus for the Old Testament readings,

and the letters of James, 1 and 2 Peter, 1-3 John, and Jude will be our focus for the New Testament readings.

May you be challenged and encouraged as we continue to read scripture together.

Now for some fun…how much do you remember from our readings in October? See how many you can get

right before looking up the answers (see page 5).

Bible Trivia from Jeremiah, Lamentations, and John

1. What excuse did Jeremiah give to the Lord when God first called him to be a prophet?

2. What sort of tradesman did God tell Jeremiah to go and watch?

3. What did Jeremiah buy while Babylon was besieging Jerusalem?

4. What did Jeremiah advise King Zedekiah to do about the onslaught of the Babylonian army?

5. According to Lamentations, what attributes of God never cease and are new every morning?

6. Which religious leader came to talk with Jesus at night?

7. To whom did Jesus say “I am the resurrection and the life”?

8. Who was the secret disciple of Jesus who asked Pilate for permission to take away the body of Jesus?

9. Which disciple was called “the twin”?

10. What question did Jesus ask Simon Peter three times?

New Sunday School Class for Adults

Not A Silent Night by Adam Hamilton

Begins Sunday, November 16 at 9:30 and 10:45

Imagine Jesus from Mary's point of view: proud of her son, in awe of his gifts and

mission, guided by love for him as a person, and so much more. Adam Hamilton begins

at the end, with Mary at the crucifixion and resurrection; travels back in time as she

witnesses his life and ministry; and ends at the beginning, with the Christ child born in a

stable, Mary's beautiful baby. This year, experience Advent and Christmas with Mary.

Adults of all ages are invited to join us for Sunday School. Come when you can; there is no need to sign up, and

no homework! It’s simply a time to fellowship and grow in your faith with others.

Grief Support Group

The hustle and bustle of the holiday season will soon be here, as

we gather with family and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving and

Christmas. While this is a joyous season for many, others may

take notice of those who are missing around the table, and the

pain of their absence is still strongly felt, no matter how long it

has been since their passing.

Experiencing the death of a loved one can cause feelings of depression, sadness, loneliness, isolation, and many

other confusing feelings. If you or someone you know could use help coping with and understanding the grief

process, we encourage you to join our Grief Support Group. This group will meet Monday evenings, November

10, 17, and 24, from 7:00 to 8:30PM.

Our group will be guided by New Hope’s Stephen Ministers and Anne Kuntz, a member of New Hope Church.

Anne is a Licensed Social Worker, has her Master’s Degree in Counseling, and has 18 years of experience facilitat-

ing support groups in a variety of settings.

This group is free and open to anyone at New Hope Church or in the community. Please RSVP by Friday,

November 7 by contacting the church office at 614.766.5445 or [email protected], or by signing up

online at NewHopeWorship.com/GriefSupport. If you have any questions about the group please call

Anne Kuntz at 614.795.0927.

At New Hope Church we acknowledge that the LORD is our ultimate healer. We invite you to join with others in

God's healing presence.

Blue Christmas: A Service of Comfort and Hope

On Monday, December 1 at 7:00PM there will be a special “Blue

Christmas” service of comfort and hope. This is a short 30 minute

prayer service with a time of fellowship together afterwards.

We may sing “tis the season to be jolly,” but we also know that it

is not a jolly season for all. At this service we will acknowledge

our pain, grief, and loss amidst all the yuletide celebrations. We

will light candles in memory of those we love and miss, and we

will remember that the true joy of Christmas comes from the One who came to heal our wounds and grant us

His peace.

Grant yourself this time to pause and reflect on these words of Jesus, “Come to me all you who are weary and I

will give you rest.”
