NEW JERSEY ALL STATE CHOIR AUDITIONS 2017 FOR NEW STUDENTS – STUDENTS WHO HAVE NOT PREVIOUSLY AUDITIONED: 1. Students will go to www.auditionforms.com 2. Click the tab STUDENT LOGIN. 3. Enter the SCHOOL CODE 4. Use the Password: New 5. Complete the requested information in the Student Profile. 6. Click SUBMIT. This will bring you to a page where where you can click PRINT APPLICATION. 7. You should now sign and secure your parent/guardian signatures and bring the application to Mr. Williams with the check for $20 made out to RHS Choir. FOR STUDENTS WHO HAVE PREVIOUSLY AUDITIONED AND ARE IN THE SYSTEM: 1. Let Mr. Williams know you are interested. He will print out a page for you with your SCHOOL CODE and ONE-TIME PIN. 2. If you are registering to audition for the 2017-2018 NJ All-State Chorus, go to www.auditionforms.com and click STUDENT LOGIN. This will bring you to the page where you can enter the SCHOOL CODE and the ONE-TIME PIN (case sensitive) at the top of the page to update any information on your Profile (email address, cell phone number, voice part, etc). 3. Once you have confirmed the information, scroll to the bottom and click SUBMIT. 4. This will bring you to a page where you now click to PRINT APPLICATION. 5. You should now sign and secure your parent/guardian signatures and bring the application to Mr. Williams with the check for $20 made out to RHS Choir. STUDENT AUDITION INFORMATION General Information

Audition Dates/Locations x SOUTH audition – Saturday, April 22, 2017

o West Deptford High School – 1600 Old Crown Point Rd, West Deptford, NJ 08093. William Yerkes, Host x NORTH audition – Saturday, April 29, 2017

o Paramus High School – 99 East Century Rd, Paramus, NJ 07652. Nicole Cascione, Host Eligibilty: To be eligible, students must be in grades 9– 11 and must be a member of their school Choral program. x Singers may only audition for one voice part. x If a public/private school does not have an established and recognized Choral Program, the student may qualify for the

NJMEA organization with the endorsement of a music teacher who is a member of NAfME. [NJMEA Handbook]. x Home School students are only eligible to audition if the choral director from their hometown or their private music

teacher sponsors them. The sponsoring teacher must be a member of NAfME and be able to verify the performance ability of the student.

x All applications must have the proper signatures. If the school teacher agrees to allow another NAfME qualified music teacher to sign for the student, the student’s school teacher and administrator must still sign, thereby indicating their knowledge of this situation.

Fees: x There is a $20.00 application fee per student to audtion.

o NJMEA does not accept parent checks. Please speak with your director as to how they wish to handle application fees.

Voice Part Changes: x The deadline for changing your voice part for the audition is Friday, March 17, 2017. x You may not change voice parts on the day of the auditions. x If there is a question about the voice part on your registration card, you may ask to see your application at the

registration table. o The voice part circled on the application form, supported by your signature and the signature of your

parents, director and principal, is the voice part for the audition. x Students may audition for the voice part best suited for a healthy vocal production, endorsed by signatures on your

application. *Please do not audition if you cannot commit to each and every part of this information!*

**Any questions regarding the NJ All-State Chorus audition process should be directed to your Choral Director.**

***We will only return phone calls and email messages to Choral Directors.***

The Audition Day Arrival: x Your Director will receive an assigned registration time for your school for the day of auditions. x Please arrive at least 15 minutes early. Gather with the other students from your school in alphabetical order by last

name (A to Z). x At the appointed time, when your school name is called, as an alphabetically organized group, proceed to the

registration table. Please do not proceed to the registration table until your school is called. Registration: x At registration, you will be asked to present your photo ID.

o NO PHOTO ID = NO AUDITION!

x Once you have presented your photo ID, you will be given your registration card. Please carry the card with you to each auditon room.

x If your school does not provide an official photo ID for students, you may take a photo with your Director, clearly indicating your name, your Director’s name, your grade and your school and print it out so you may present it at registration.

x SOPRANOS/ALTOS: There are three parts to your registration card. x TENORS/BASSES: There are two parts to your registration card. x Each audition room (final rooms and tonal memory) will cut off a part of the registration card to attach to your score

sheets. You will not get any part of your registration card back. Warm-up Room x From registration, please proceed to the warm-up room. x In the warm-up room, you will be able to run through your scales, solo and quintet. Final Rooms (Scales, Solo, Quintet): x From the warm-up room, proceed to one of the Final Rooms. Your audition takes place in THREE (Sopranos/Altos) or

TWO (Tenors/Basses) rooms. o You may proceed to any part of your audition which has a shorter line.

Final Rooms (Rules): x You may ask to repeat the following parts of your audition:

o Low scale, High scale o Chromatic scale o Solo

x If you wish to try any of the scales or solo a second time, please proceed as follows: o YOU must ask to replay the pitch and the judge will state, “Second and Final Time”. o No judge will initiate the repeat of any of the scales.

x If you think you received a wrong pitch from a judge, please proceed as follows: o YOU must ask the judge to replay the pitch and clarify the pitch he/she is playing. o If you still have a concern, YOU must ask the monitor to walk over and check that the judge is playing the

proper pitch. x If you lose your concentration, please proceed as follows:

o YOU may ask the judge to try a second time. o The judge will replay the starting pitch and state, “Second and Final Time”.

x You CANNOT repeat the quintet (“The Silver Swan”) o If you lose your concentration you must try and recover at the next phrase.

Tonal Memory: x Tonal Memory exercises are four measures long and are pre-recorded on a CD. x When you enter the Tonal Memory room you will be directed to a music stand upon which will be a Tonal Memory

Exercise sheet. x The Room Chairperson will indicate which exercise you will hear. x You will hear the exercise twice and then you must sing it back on the syllable “LA” or Solfege. x You will NOT hear the starting pitch again. Begin singing as soon as the second exercise has finished. x You must sing every beat of every measure in order to receive the best possible score. x Tonal Memory exercises will start and end on the same pitch. x Scoring:

o 4 measures perfect = 1 x 3 judges = Tonal Memory Score of 3….added to your Final Room scores o 3 measures perfect = 2 x 3 judges = Tonal Memory Score of 6….added to your Final Room scores o 2 measures perfect = 3 x 3 judges = Tonal Memory Score of 9….added to your Final Room scores o 1 measures perfect = 4 x 3 judges = Tonal Memory Score of 12…added to your Final Room scores o 0 measures perfect = 5 x 3 judges = Tonal Memory Score of 15…added to your Final Room scores

How are the choirs are chosen? x The NJ All-State Mixed Choir is chosen first. x Those sopranos and altos who fall below the cut-off of the NJ All-State Mixed Choir begin the roster for the

NJ All-State Treble Choir. x Sopranos and Altos may not choose between the Mixed and Treble Choruses.

If I am accepted Attendance Policy:

x Students are expected to attend all rehearsals and concerts. x One absence will result in testing at the following rehearsal. x Two missed rehearsals will result in expulsion from the ensemble. x Students must attend all activities in their entirety. x An absence is defined as missing any scheduled rehearsal or ANY PART THEREOF. x Failure to attend any concert will result in the loss of the All-State pin and eligibility to audition the following

year for any NJMEA sponsored activity. Rehearsal Dates

Location: TBA x MIXED – Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at 7:00pm to Friday November 10, 2017. Location: Atlantic City x TREBLE – Sunday, February 4, 2018 from 1:00pm – 5:00pm. Location: TBA x TREBLE – Thursday, February 22, 2018 at 7:00pm to Saturday, February 24, 2018. Location: East Brunswick

Concert Dates: x Mixed Choir

o Atlantic City - November 10, 2017 at 8:30pm. o NJPAC - Sunday, November 19, 2017 at 3:00pm.

x Treble Choir o NJPAC - Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 3:00pm.

Fees: Acceptance and Housing: x There is a music and rehearsal track fee of $35.00 x There is a housing fee of $300.00 x Bus transportation for North students to Atlantic City is approximately $50. Housing: x Students must stay at the designated All-State Hotel. x Students are not permitted to drive to Atlantic City or East Brunswick. x Rehearsals will be scheduled on Wednesday, Novemember 8, 2017, starting at 7pm, all day Thursday, November 9th,

and Friday, November 10th for Mixed Choir. x Rehearsals will be scheduled on Thursday, February 22, 2018 starting at 7pm, all day Friday, February 23rd, and

Saturday, February 24th for Treble Chorus.

PREPARING YOUR AUDITION! ***YOUR AUDITION MUST BE MEMORIZED***

Printed below you will find the information you will need for a successful audition. Please note: all pitches for scales and the solo will be given on a pre-recorded mp3. You can practice with this format at www.njmea.org so that you are familiar with the audition process.

1. *Low Scale – Diatonic a. Begin on the lower note and ascend one octave. Take a breath, then descend back to the

starting pitch. 2. *High Scale – Diatonic

a. Begin on the lower note and ascend one octave. Take a breath, then descend back to the starting pitch.

*All scales will be sung on the vowel “AH” as in father.

**Alto II and Bass II’s –Sing your low scale descending, pause for a breath and complete your scale, ascending.

*** Tenor II Low Scale –You have the option of beginning this scale either ascending or descending. 3. Chromatic Scale

a. Chromatic scales are sung in half steps ascending, pause for a breath and in half steps descending.

b. They are sung on the vowel “AH” as in father.

****Judging for all scales is based on one score for quality and one for intonation.****

****Low and high diatonic scales are scored separately.**** 4. *Solo – “Shenandoah”

a. The starting pitch for the solo is given (NOT THE TONIC PITCH).

5. *Quintet – “The Silver Swan” by Orlando Gibbons – the first 14 measures a. The Silver Swan is played from an mp3 recording minus your voice part. b. The mp3 will indicate the tonic pitch of Gb, will pause briefly to enable you to establish

your starting pitch, and will begin by saying “3, 4, Sing..” c. To purchase copies of The Silver Swan, the edition used by NJMEA is SSATB Bourne Co,

Publisher ID 116156 in Gb major. *Judging for the Solo and the Quintet is based on Quality, Intonation and Musicianship. The point scores are as follows:

� 1-2 Highly Superior � 3-4 Excellent � 5-6 Good � 7-8 Fair � 9 Poor

6. Tonal Memory

a. Tonal Memory exercises are four measures long and are pre-recorded on a CD. b. When you enter the Tonal Memory room, you will be directed to a music stand upon

which will be a Tonal Memory Exercise sheet. c. The Room Chairperson will indicate which exercise you will hear. d. While viewing the music, you will hear the exercise twice and then you must sing it

back on the syllable “LA” or Solfege. e. You will NOT hear the starting pitch again. f. BEGIN SINGING AS SOON AS THE SECOND EXERCISE HAS FINISHED! g. Please note: Tonal Memory exercises will start and end on the same pitch.
