New Mexico’s Modern Side Santa Fe, New Mexico May 1–3, 2020 PHOTO BY TREVOR TONDRO Arnold Friedman House (Wright, 1945) Geller House (Bart Prince, 2019) New Mexico is practically synonymous with adobe-style architecture, but there’s another side to the Land of Enchantment. The Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy uncovers hidden gems of modern and organic architecture in the Santa Fe and Albuquerque areas, including a very special visit to Wright’s Arnold Friedman House (1945), the first of Wright’s two “teepee” houses, still owned by the original family and seldom open to visitors. Distinctive works by famed organic architect Bart Prince, Wright scholar Anthony Alofsin, AIA Gold Medal winner Ricardo Legoretta, and a special tour dedicated to artist Georgia O’Keeffe round out the Conservancy’s first event in New Mexico. Main Event Saturday, May 2 Arnold Friedman House (Wright, 1945) | Built of stone walls, rough- sawn pine boards and cedar shakes, this elegantly rustic lodge in rural Pecos has a 28-foot ceiling in the living space spanned by rafters that create a kaleidoscope of geometric forms—a system of construction Wright used only here. Its owners have kept it true to Wright’s design. New Mexico is practically synonymous with adobe-style architecture, but there’s another side to the Land of Enchantment.
