Dear Parish Family, It was the great Saint John of the Cross who once prayed: “Well and good if all things change, Lord God, provided we are rooted in You.” Change is an inevitable yet often difficult part of life. Some changes we expect and some come out of the blue, some bring a sense of excitement and new hope while others bring insecurity and fear. Regard-less of when, why or how it comes, change is always an opportunity for greater trust in the God Who Does Not Change. Throughout my years of priesthood, I have often resisted change: it’s always been a difficult thing for me to experience the changes that are a natural part of parish life when parishioners move away or the Lord calls them home to the life of heaven. As I write this letter, a beautiful young family in the parish who are very involved in the life of St. James are preparing to move to Texas next month, and a wonderful mother and grandmother in the parish also much involved is leaving Springfield to move closer to her family. I think of others who have left, and still other members of our parish family who have died. Even within the rectory and staff of a parish people come and go, and while it is difficult we must respect the movement of the Holy Spirit in the lives of people with whom we live and minister. Although it may not seem so right now, St. James has been a parish that has had a decent amount of stability over the past twenty years: Fr. Stagg, Msgr. Bill, Fr. Jim, Sr. Roseanne, Janet Natale, Pat Dolansky, Maggie Keffer- all staff people who were part of the parish for considerable lengths of time. But the past three years have seen much change, and I know that can bring a feeling of instability. Most of you I imagine right now are aware that I will be leaving St. James as your pastor to take over as administrator of St. Rose of Lima Church in Short Hills on November 27th. And, unfortunately, this weekend I need to announce another change in the staff: Dan Palko, the parish organist and Director of Music, has been sick for the past two months. Dan notified me last week that he will not be returning to St. James since changes in his own health will make it difficult. The Music Ministry will continue under the able direction of Faith MacDonnell and Matthew Wilson (organist) who have been helping out since Dan became ill. I want to welcome Faith and Matthew officially as members of the parish staff! As we go through these days of change together and you are feeling some of that sense of instability right now, it is only because you love your parish. The parish has become an extension of your family life, and the people you have connected with here are part of your community. That is a beautiful thing! For some, changes in their parish are something they don’t even notice or care much about. But for you who have entered more deeply into the life of the Church, movement in your parish means movement in your family and in your heart and that is something you take seriously. Of course, at times change brings something exciting: for example, Archbishop Myers has appointed Fr. John Dennehy as Temporary Administrator of St. James! Fr. John is so much a part of life here in our parish, and I am most grateful for his willingness to assume this new role during our time of transition. John Henry Cardinal Newman once wrote: “In a higher world it is otherwise; but here below, to live is to change, and to be perfect is to have changed often.” May the Lord help us to be perfect in love and in trust. And may the changes of this life help us to yearn for that time and place when all change will cease, and an eternity of communion and union with God and one another will be ours. Until then, hope! Trust! Love! In His love,

~ Father John

+ Lord God, we ask for guidance during this time of transition for St. James Parish. Help us to see this change as a time for renewal and strength rather than a time of sadness and disappointment. Help us to hold fast to our trust in you and to remain open to your guid-ance as only you know what is best for us and our parish community. Let us be open and supportive of Fr. Silvano and Fr. John Dennehy as they help us in this transition and continue

to help us grow and deepen our faith and our desire to serve You. Allow us to know our own gifts and to re-main open to sharing them for the good of our parish and your people. Please bless our pastor, Fr. John, as he too must face a transition to a new place. Bless him and guide him as he begins a new journey as You have called him to do. Help him to know of our gratitude for all he has done to strengthen St James and to know of our love and prayers for him. Help us to let go of him and be open to whomever you send to us as our new pastor.

We ask this through your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen. Anonymous

PARISH SCHOOL NEWS

Mrs. Caroline Ponterio, Principal

Written By Mrs. Mary McElroy

THE LATEST AND GREATEST SCHOOL NEWS Honoring Veterans: Saint James the Apostle students honored all who serve, in the past or currently, by at-tending the annual Veterans Day ceremony in Spring-field’s Veterans Memorial Park. It is our tradition to walk from the school to the park as a school communi-ty, waving flags on our way, to show our admiration and gratitude to those who have given selflessly to pro-tect and serve our country. It’s time for Forensics: The first Union County Catholic Schools League of Forensics competition is being held this Wednesday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Academy in Elizabeth. Students in grade 5-8 have the opportunity to try out for a spot to represent Saint James. The category is Reading. Students select a piece to present and will be judged on 5 criteria: general poise, diction, gestures, approach and attitude, and ef-fectiveness in presentation. Six (6) students will repre-sent Saint James and they are Christina Tillinghast, Madison Wright, Ryan Fischer, Yvonne Agyapong, Na-talyah Cadiche and Kennedy Kwinta. The alternates who are prepared to compete in the absence of one of the first six are Grace Fischer and Goda Pocius. Good luck to all of our students! Thanks to Mrs. Noonan and Miss Lanigan for moderating. Clothing Drive Update: We would like to thank the Home School Association for organizing last week’s clothing drive fundraiser. A big thanks to all those who were able to clean out their closets and donate to the drive. Over 100 bags of used clothing, shoes, bedding, towels, handbags, etc. were collected. Saint James the Apostle School will receive a monetary donation based on the total pounds collected. Donated items make it into the hands of people who really need it throughout the developing world. All Souls: In November, we remember all our loved ones who have died by writing their names on a red construction paper candle with flame as part of a larger bulletin board display resembling votive candles in a church. We pray for their comfort and peace and we thank God for our memories of them and the good times we shared. School Advisory Board: Saint James the Apostle School Advisory Board members serve Saint James the Apostle School by offering time and talent to enable Saint James to pursue its mission of education in the Catholic Church. We are recruiting new members. If you are interested in becoming a member contact Mrs. Ponterio at 973-376-5194.
