An Independent Public School Working Together, Achieving More SPRINGFIELD NEWSLETTER 31 Bridgewater Drive Kallaroo WA 6025 P: (61 8) 9401 6069 E: Spring- field[email protected] W: www.springfield.ps.wa.edu.au Newsletter Issue 31 2018 Wednesday 17 October 2018 From the Principal You may know that many schools now have fences around them which are locked quite soon after school closes and the schools stay that way after school and at weekends. Schools with fences do tend to have less vandalism and graffiti. However, I have resisted the idea of fencing as my view is that ours is a community school and our facilities should be available to our families. Yes, damage to the school (and dog poo on the oval) is annoying but compared to other schools not a major issue. We have built up what we feel are excellent play facilities and I know that the community makes good use of them after school, at weekends and in holidays and really appreciate the opportunities they offer for the children. However, the down side is that children, especially young children need to be supervised. Last night we had an accident on the playground, thankfully not too serious, but it highlighted the need for supervision, especially in the afternoon period where parents may get distracted. It is great to see the students enjoying our play areas after school and I know it is a good social occasion for parents but could I ask that you are vigilant in supervising the students so that we can keep them all safe. Your support would be very much appreciated. LEARNING JOURNEYS Each year around this time we give parents the opportunity to come in to school and have your own personal guide to show and explain to you the learning that is happening in their classroom. We call this a learning journey as your children guide you through their educational journey and hopefully give you lots of information about how they learn in class. Early in the year our class meetings were either in school time or just after especially for our families with younger children. For Learning Journeys we go later to hopefully give our working parents a chance to come in. We will have our Learning Journeys between 5 and 6pm (but please come earlier, rather than later) on Wednesday the 24 th October. WOOLWORTHS I have been a little critical in the past of the big stores using initiatives aimed at the kids to bolster sales. However, Woolworths are offering a behind the scenes look at their store with activities included. Yesterday, our second Pre-primary class visited Woolworths for a look at what goes on behind the scenes. No cost, no gimmicks just a good learning opportunity so thank you Woolworths. CATS Unfortunately we have had to change one of the days of our Cats Shows. The afternoon performance for the school and any parents who cant make an evening performance will now be on 6 th November. The two evening performances remain on the 8 th and 9 th . We would be delighted to see all our school community, friends and relations support our production. To help us organise seating we will be having tickets for the three performances and would really appreciate it if you could get a ticket from the front office. We cannot charge for the tickets but would really appreciate a donation as we have had costs, including buying the licence to perform and sets, props and make-up. We are still looking for volunteers to help with make up for 40 cats on the Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. PHOTOS Following our recent school photography by Kapture, you can now view and order any special photos taken on the day. Shenae

Teacher: Mrs Webb

Shenae is a quiet achiever. She sets about her work quickly and quietly, focusing persistently until the task is completed. She tries extremely hard in her classwork and always endeavours to do her best. If there is an oppor-tunity to assist others, Shenae will lend a helping hand, thoughtfully and un-obtrusively. She is softly spoken, supportive to all and kind to everyone. It is wonderful to see the many positive gains Shenae has made so far this year.

Swimming Classes commence on Monday 22nd

October and conclude on Friday November 2nd

.

What To Bring: Children usually wear their swimming attire under school clothes prior to their lesson. They carry underclothes and towel in a small bag, (Please avoid plastic bags). Children will change at the pool after their lesson and return to school dry,. Please note that aerosol spray deodorants are not allowed. Swimming teachers recommend the use of goggles.

It is also helpful for students to wear thongs (Flip Flops/Jandals) to and from the pool. Students must wear shoes to and from school.

If you have any issues with swimming and wish to make contact with the swimming teacher please see Mr Sweet first.

WORLD SINGING DAY It is World Singing Day on Saturday 20 October. Mrs McCormack will be accompanying the OBV Singers and would like to invite you along. It is being held at Yagan Square in the city from 12-1pm. There will be a backing track playing and the song lyrics will be displayed on a big screen. The repertoire is great and includes This Is Me, Imagine, Hallelujah, Land Down Under and We Are the Champions. It is a karaoke style, family friendly event which is sure to be a lot of fun!

FACTION POINT COMPETITION

TERM 4

As we mentioned last week, we now total all the faction points from the last three terms and add on the weekly totals for Term 4. Our final sausage sizzle of the year, for the overall champions, will be held in week 9, so all points are to be collected by the end of week 8. That’s only 7 weeks to gather as many points as possible, so good luck everyone. Our current totals are:

GREEN (Bridgewater) 490 points

RED (Cygnet) 487 points

GOLD (Batavia) 479 points

Our children should all be wearing super hero capes!

I don’t know about you but I truly believe living in Australia isn’t like how it was 25 years ago. I remember my youth to be quite care free and finding a job was as easy as 1,2,3. You could even change your career path with ease. Today we need tickets, certifications and clearances for everything. Our children are growing up in a world that is increasingly competitive and comparative. Unless you are the Kardashians, you are not born with suc-cess and wealth and happiness…well maybe not the happiness part. One of the most powerful tools we can teach our children in this day in age is to be courageous…to have courage to keep going, to find a different way, and to have the courage to try it in the first place. Teach your children that from the outside courage might look powerful but on the inside it may feel frightening and anxious. Teach your child that if there is no fear, there is no need for courage. The best way to build courage in our kids is to: 1. Speak of their bravery as though they’re already there, “I know how brave you are.”

2. Give permission for imperfection.

3. Let them know that they won’t always feel ready. That’s why it’s brave.

4. Encourage them to try something new to push their boundaries.

5. Be their example.

Our children are slaying their own dragons every day. They’re super heroes, everyone of them.
