EIà{ fâÇwtç |Ç bÜw|ÇtÜç g|Åx bvàÉuxÜ D? ECDJ From the Pastor:
My Friends in the Lord Jesus,
Music enhances life. We all seem to have a favorite song or tune that we enjoy, some important to a particular special event in life. So too are our hymns in church. We have our favorite style of liturgical music which fosters faith and strengthens belief. Our second reading today, from St. Paul’s Letter to the Philippians, is in the form of a hymn too.
This hymn, which St. Paul used in his letter to the Philippians, is from the earliest times of Christianity. It pre-dates St. Paul. It is in poetic form and resembles the style of early Christian poems or hymns found elsewhere in the New Testament. It was most likely written in Aramaic originally. But, like all Christian hymns it professes the truth about God. It is a hymn about salvation in Christ and the truth about God’s saving act in Christ Jesus.
This hymn in today’s second reading is among the earliest expressions of belief in Christ. It professes Christ as pre-existent, “Christ, being in the form of God;” his loving act of becoming a human being, “He emptied himself, coming in human likeness;” his death “he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death;” and his resurrection, “because of this, God highly exalted him…Jesus Christ is Lord.” This hymn is like a catechism in poetic form, it teaches the faith.
However, there is something more in these poetic phrases. In it we hear something unusual, like an interruption, in this hymn. It is a sentence which was written into the hymn by St. Paul. It concerns the manner of the death of Jesus. It is here that St. Paul makes one of the earliest proclamations about Christ. Christ Jesus “humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross.” Not just any type of death, but death on a cross! This phrase expresses the belief of the early Church, that Jesus Christ saved the world through the sacrifice of his death on the cross. These first Christians had already developed a proclamation of the exaltation of the cross of Christ, “even death on a cross”! Because of this, God highly exalted him to receive the homage of all creation. We “sing” their hymn today, proclaiming the same truth about Jesus Christ.
The cross of Christ, upon which Christ became our salvation, is the sign with which we bless ourselves, recalling the saving event of Christ Jesus. It is to the cross that we all unite our sufferings. The cross of Jesus, and his saving act on it, is our source of strength, hope, and salvation. We join our voices to this ancient hymn, bending the knee at the name of Jesus, as we sing in proclamation in our day, “Lift high the Cross.”

26th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Do nothing out of selfishness; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves...”
(Philippians 2:3)
Pride and ego are hard things to control. We see how others act or dress and think we are superior to them. We idolize our own self-image. But, if we truly believe everything is a gift from God, we recognize all the people that God has put in our lives as gifts! We are grateful for how they enrich our lives. Pray every day for the people in your life.
