New research from Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology
Highlights from the May issue ofUOG
The May issue of Ultrasound in Obstetrics
and Gynecology illustrates the range of
predictive tests and interventions for preterm
birth (PTB) that are under investigation.
Included are articles on the effectiveness of
established and emerging screening methods
and their implementation in clinical practice,
as well as preventative methods such as
pessary or cervical cerclage. An opinion
piece by Shennan discusses some of the
relevant articles in this issue in the context of
existing literature, highlighting the often
conflicting evidence, and advising that more
input from the academic community is
required to elucidate the subtleties in differing
efficacies of both prediction and prevention of
PTB.

Virtual Issue: prediction andprevention of preterm birth
Also available this month is our Virtual Issue
on the prediction and prevention of preterm
birth. Preterm birth is a leading cause of
neonatal mortality and morbidity worldwide,
having immense clinical, personal and
economic impacts. Effective identification and
management of women who will deliver
preterm is therefore of high importance.
Whilst this has been the focus of a wealth of
research, the underlying pathophysiology of
preterm birth is largely unknown, and the
growing evidence base is often conflicting.
This new Virtual Issue from UOG presents a
series of papers reporting on predictive tests
and interventions for preterm birth, as well as
on how best to integrate them into clinical
practice. These papers are free to read for a
limited period of 2 months.
Check out other UOG Virtual
Issues, compiled by the Journal's Editorial
team.
You can also supplement your reading on
preterm birth with video lectures and CME
activities.
