QUESTION & ANSWER
As Advent is a preparation time for Christmas, we begin
to look at some questions regarding the incarnation of
Christ (that is the enfleshment of God). One of those
questions is:
Why was Jesus born of a woman? He could have
bypassed conception, gestation, birth, infancy and
youth entirely. He could have appeared on earth as
a grown man, but He did not. Why not?
St. Thomas Aquinas, in the Thirteenth century answered
this question thusly: Firstly, in choosing to be born of a
woman, God ennobled both genders. The male sex was
ennobled because God’s Word became flesh and was
male. The female gender was ennobled because it was
from Mary that Christ took His humanity.
Secondly, just as Adam and Eve were both created
outside the usual order of things, the New Adam, Christ
would be made in a unique manner. Eve was made
without the help of another woman, but was drawn by
God directly from the man Adam. So in a parallel
manner, the New Adam was made by God directly from
a woman, Mary (the new Eve), without the help of a
man.
Thirdly, it was fitting that Jesus be born of a woman so
as not to lose the natural in the supernatural, but that both
the natural (man) and the supernatural (God) should
balance and complete each other. In this manner, we
might avoid the heresy of thinking that God only
appeared as a man, like a costume and was not really of
human flesh.
