HABEMUS PAPAM We Have a PopeWednesday, April 6, 2016

Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum: HABEMUS PAPAM! No, we do not have a new pope, but what we do have is Nanni Morettis 2011 amiable comedy Habemus Papam, an entertaining and even prophetic film depicting the Sistine Chapel conclave and the election of a reluctant, panic-stricken, aged man to the papacy. Praised by the RadioVaticana for its faithful representation of the conclaves inner workings and for its accurate sets, the film is as humorous as it is moving. Directed by Nanni Moretti | 2011 | 102 min.| In Italian with English subtitles.

LIMPERATORE DI CAPRI The Emperor of Capri Wednesday, May 11, 2016Until the 19th Century, Capri did not exist in the minds and dreams of travelers. Its enchanting and sensuous beauty, its incomparable marriage of the sea and the sun, and its illustrious historical legacy were known only to the locals. It was then - principally due to the magnetic allure of its otherworldly Grotta Azzurra - that the foreign grand tour visitors began to arrive en masse. Relive the beauties of these places through the scenes and scenery from LImperatore di Capri, a popular, hilarious, masterpiece of Italian cinema featuring the great Antonio DeCurtis, better known as Tot. Sonia, a beautiful gold digger, mistakes Antonio (Tot), a waiter in a Neapolitan hotel, for the Arab prince Bey of Agapur and makes an appointment with him for the following day in Capri. Antonio goes behind his wife and mother in laws back. Due to a lucky series of circumstances he really does become the prince of the island. Directed by Luigi Comencini | 1949 | 98 min. | In Italian with English subtitles.

    THE ETERNAL CITY OF ROME

THE ETRUSCANS Saturday, February 6, 2016 at 10:30amBy 700 BC the Etruscans had established themselves in the Italian peninsula. They occupied Tuscany, Western Umbria, and Northern Lazio, and much of what the Romans gave to the world actually came from this advanced civilization. Learn about their amazing accomplishments, the major effect they had on Italian language, art, architecture, and how they influenced the growth of Rome and its culture.

GIAN LORENZO BERNINI Saturday, March 5, 2016 at 10:30amLearn about the life and work of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Italian sculptor and architect. A major figure in the world of architecture, he was the leading sculptor of his age, credited with creating the Baroque style of sculpture. Much of what Rome looks like today is due to the work of this talented genius. His sculptures, architecture, and paintings left their mark in St. Peters Basilica, the Vatican, numerous fountains, and works that can be admired in Villa Borghese.

AQUEDUCTS AND FOUNTAINS Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 10:30am The Romans built an elaborate system of aqueducts; they were an amazing engineering feat, bringing water from distant sources into the city supplying their baths, fountains, and their drinking water. Learn more about how these amazing aqueducts were constructed, their importance for the roman society, how different the society would have been without imported water, and take a look at some the most beautiful fountains that were built with the aqueducts water.

ROADS AND ARCHES Saturday, May 21, 2016 at 10:30am Romans are also known for their great road constructions and outstanding arches. They built roads everywhere they conquered. The extensive road system enabled its armies and citizens to go from Western Europe to Greece without ever leaving a Roman road, and these amazing constructions have lasted over 2,000 years, with many still in use today. Roman arches were used in many of Roman architecture, like the Colosseum and aqueducts. Some arches were made to honor and remember special people in Roman history. Learn more about these impressive roads and arches constructions and take a closer look at how they were built.

MONUMENTS OF ROMESaturday, June 4, 2016 at 10:30am Enjoy all the treasures Rome has to offer with a virtual tour around the city. Learn more about the best known monuments of Rome, such as the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Capitoline Hill, Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and many more that will be brought to you by Toni McKeen.

A series of five lectures presented by Toni McKeen will offer a deeper insight on the Eternal City of Rome. The ancient Romans believed that, no matter what happened to the world or how many empires came and collapsed, Rome would go on forever. The enduring quality of the city continues even to this day, as

Rome remains one of the most vibrant cities and a leading tourist destination in Europe.Must register in advanced and prepay. Members $20, Non-Members $25

The course focuses on Italian phonetics, starting with the alphabet and syllables, common phrases, and basic grammar. Students can expect to master simple sentences and engage in beginning level conversations.Beginner II: Students pursue the next level of beginning conversation and writing skills. The course is designed for those who want to go beyond a basic knowledge and understanding of Italian grammar. Titians style did alter throughout his long life but his interest in color never diminished. His use of paint and brushwork made him the foremost painter in Venice and his execution of both landscapes and portraits brought him great fame in his own lifetime and after. The High Renaissance Venetian painter Giorgio Barbarelli da Castelfranco, popularly known as Giorgione, was a pupil of Giovanni Bellini, whose unique expression of color, light and atmosphere gave Venetian painting a distinctive character to rival the Florentine focus on line and composition.
