TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — God brought us into this land flowing with milk and honey (Deuteronomy 26:4-10). Psalm — Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble (Psalm 91). ALMSGIVING, PRAYER, FASTING, AND TEMPTATION As we begin our season of fasting, prayer, and almsgiv-ing, the reading from Deuteronomy reminds us of our duty of almsgiving, that we “set [our offerings] before the Lord, [our] God, [and] shall bow down in [God’s] pres-ence” (Deuteronomy 26:10). The reading from Romans refers us to our prayer, reminding us that “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart . . . For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:8, 13). These are comforting words, and encourage us to ask God for what we need and to aid us in our prayer. Finally, the Gospel of Luke shows us a fasting Jesus, who was tempted as we are, and who knows what it means to be human. Someone once said that temptation arises when you’re tired and weary, and the devil comes along and makes a perfectly reasonable sug-gestion. Jesus shows us that, with his help, we too can over-come our temptations, reasonable as they may sound.

Saint of the Day March 10: Saint Dominic Savio (April 2, 1842–March 9, 1857)
So many holy persons seem to die young. Among them was Dominic Savio, the patron of choirboys. Born into a peasant family at Riva, Italy, young Dominic joined Saint
John Bosco as a student at the Oratory in Turin at the age of 12. He impressed Don Bosco with his desire to be a priest and to help him in his work with neglected boys. A peacemaker and an organizer, young Dominic founded a group he called the Company of the Immaculate Conception which, besides being devotional, aided John Bosco with the boys and with manual work. All the members save one, Dominic, would, in 1859, join Don Bosco in
the beginnings of his Salesian congregation. By that time, Dominic had been called home to heaven. As a youth, Dominic spent hours rapt in prayer. His raptures he called “my distractions.” Even in play, he said that at times, “It seems heaven is opening just above me. I am afraid I may say or do something that will make the other boys laugh.” Dominic would say, “I can’t do big things. But I want all I do, even the smallest thing, to be for the greater glory of God.” Dominic’s health, always frail, led to lung problems and he was sent home to recuperate. As was the custom of the day, he was bled in the thought that this would help, but it only worsened his condition. He died on March 9, 1857, after receiving the Last Sacraments. Saint John Bosco himself wrote the account of his life. Some thought that Dominic was too young to be considered a saint. Saint Pius X declared that just the opposite was true, and went ahead with his cause. Dominic was canonized in 1954.

The Knights of Columbus will host fish fries on Fridays during Lent at the church hall from 4:30-7 p.m. The meal is all-you-can-eat ca ish fillets, fried potato wedges, baked beans, dessert & drink. The cost is $12 for adults, ages 6-12 are $5, and those under 5 eat free. Carry-outs are available. The excep on is Friday, March 15 which will be a "drive through" fish fry (fish & fries only) to allow for prepara ons for the St. Pat's Dinner on Saturday, March 16. On this date, the meal will be $10. The other dates are: March 22, March 29, April 5 and April 12. If you have a large number of carry-out orders, please call ahead to 660-441-1892. On the day Jesus was baptized, the Holy Spirit anointed him. Immediately after this event the Holy Spirit led Jesus to the desert. The desert was a place of isolation, death, and defeat, but Jesus was led to the desert so that it may be forever changed into a place of grace. The Spirit led Jesus to the desert and also protected and cared for him while he was there. The desert is a part of every Christian’s life but it does not have to be a place of despair or isolation. The Holy Spirit is present to life’s deserts and when we experience his presence it changes our spiritual life. The desert is no longer a place to be feared but can be a profound encounter with Jesus.

6th Basketball: The 6th grade teams finished out the season this week with the St. Pius Tournament. Thanks to Jason Eckerle and Tony Watring for coaching the girls and boys teams respectively.
School Play: Practice for the play coming up in April has begun! Thanks to Janelle Drummond and Mandy Eichelberger for directing this year. The play will be on April 26th and 27th at Thespian Hall.
Track Season: The track season in conjunction with LSE is underway as well. Practices began this week with the first meet coming up.
Stations of the Cross: The school with pray the Stations of the Cross on Friday afternoons in church at 2:15 pm. All are invited.

Our confirmation schedule is changing this year. Classes will begin the week of March 10. Confirmation with the Bishop will be Monday, Nov. 18. Information packets will be sent to all current high school juniors and sophomores in our parish, and St. Joseph, Fayette.
We intend to offer classes Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings, but need more adults to join our team! Our primary curriculum is Decision Point by Dynamic Catholic.
We will have five sessions this spring, ending the week of May 5. Summer fellowship and service projects are being planned. Candidates will also be asked to attend a Catholic retreat.
Sessions will resume in the fall, beginning the week of Sept. 8.
Our confirmation program is developed with the intention to not only prepare students to receive the sacrament of Confirmation, but also to allow parents and sponsors to engage in a process of renewal in their own faith journey. Their participation is welcomed and encouraged.
