Last week our Youth Group was outside running a fun “sidewalk chalk” poll

as neighbors and baseball fans passed by. We took turns asking people if

they wanted to participate. After several minutes, I realized that one of my

teens had an excellent skill - as someone approached, she gently moved

toward them, and then very kindly and animatedly engaged in conversation

as they walked along together, explaining the situation.

I was struck by the fact that this teenager instinctively knew what it meant

to accompany someone… to walk with them, at whatever pace they were

moving, headed in whichever direction they were already going. She didn’t

just stand there and call out to them, or wave and hope they paid attention

- she went out to meet them, and walked side by side. Sometimes she was

turned down and became disappointed, but I encouraged her that this is

how Christ is with us - he meets us on the road, walks with us, and is not

discouraged when we pass on by. He will let us go for the moment, but we

will see him again, at the next bend in the road.

We are all pilgrims on the journey. Thank you for taking a moment to rest

with us at Saint Andrew. We hope you will accept our offer to walk on this

road, together.

Kairos Retreat for high school upperclassmen.

The North Side Kairos has been a collaborative effort by Chicago

parishes for nearly 20 years. The retreat brings together Kairos

leaders from different high school programs around Chicago to

provide a coed Kairos retreat for students who do not attend a

Catholic high school.

The retreat is now accepting registration for youth attendees. To

be eligible to attend, a youth participant must have completed

their Sophomore, Junior, or Senior year of high school this past

academic year (2018-2019).

To register for the retreat or to learn more, please visit the

webpage for the retreat at www.standrew.org/kairos2019.

Ten years ago Rita and I faced a sad reality in sharing our inheritance with our children. I was physically unable to take care of our house and property. So in preparation for my therapy, we decided to sell our place and move to a townhouse in the suburbs. This required downsizing our possessions, and deciding what we needed versus what we had accumulated. Our children had left, off to college and then to jobs outside of Michigan. Naturally we approached them to help with receiving their "inheritance." But unable to return easily to Michigan, it meant that Rita and I had to bring their 'personal possessions' to them. So, we turned to Craigslist and eBay and found we could barely sell anything. The sale price was more like gifting. And indeed we did gift to Habitat for Humanity, our parish's rummage sale, St Vincent and Salvation Army thrift stores, the public library, creative centers, and a lot of stuff we left on the street for free or for the garbage man. No new barns needed for us, our possessions were not worth it. It was quite a shock to sell our house, cars and household treasures for next to nothing. Truly a false reality of what we had 'toiled and

labored for under the sun.' Our assumed worth, to be left to our children, spent on worthless items. So "many good things stored up for so many years" for our children, but now were all gone. Yet, now we felt free! We no longer had anxieties about our house, we simply went and visited our children. We were not distracted by all that marketing hype to buy, as our happiness was achieved through the lives of our children and grandchildren. We weren't shopping online or in stores, but our time is now sharing our love with our family and friends and community. Jesus brings a new reality into focus in his parable on inheritance. A focus that we often are working for future goals that include security, relaxation, and wealth. Yet, we miss the present treasures of family and friends. Relationships do take time to develop, and through them we create the ultimate inheritance. An inheritance of love that Jesus wants us to share now and throughout our life time. "One's life does not consist of possessions," but through our relationships with family, friends and God we are forever enriched.

At every stage of life, we engage our members to learn. From our Blue-Ribbon school to our K-8

Religious Education program, preparation for Marriage and Baptism to opportunities for young adults and

parents, we are dedicated to fostering deeper knowledge of God and self as we grow step by step.

The Catholic tradition teaches that human dignity can be

protected and a healthy community can be achieved only

if human rights are protected and responsibilities are met.

Therefore, every person has a fundamental right to life

and a right to those things required for human decency.

Corresponding to these rights are duties and

responsibilities--to one another, to our families, and to the

larger society.

We can look to scripture to find instruction on how we can

take responsibility in order to protect the rights of the

vulnerable. Take out your bible and see if you can draw

the same conclusions from these readings:

Leviticus 25:35

When someone is reduced to poverty, we have an

obligation to help.

Proverbs 31:8-9

Open your mouth to speak on behalf of those in need.

Acts 4: 32-35

There was not a needy person among them.

2 Corinthians 9:6-15

God’s gifts are given to be shared.

(USCCB’s Seven Themes of Catholic Social Teaching)

During the week of August 4 through August 10, 2019

we will change our daily Mass schedule. The sacrifice of

the Mass will be celebrated on Monday and Friday and

Christ’s presence in word and sacrament will be shared

through Communion Services on Tuesday, Wednesday,

and Thursday.

Come see what educational excellence looks like!

Saint Andrew School is a Blue Ribbon School that excels in

Catholic education! We are still accepting students for the

upcoming school year. Learn more by calling 773-248-2500 or

visiting www.GoSaintAndrew.com.

Saint Andrew School focuses on the whole child; promoting individual academic achievement, developing

spiritual awareness, building character and encouraging service for the common good.

We have limited openings for children ages 2 1/2 to 8th grade. Call today to set up your appointment!

Inquire about participating in the Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA)

Saint Andrew attracts people from all over the country and world who come to live in this neighborhood.

Because of this extraordinary juncture, many have questions about becoming Catholic or completing

initiation through Adult Confirmation. If you or someone you know is seeking answers about Faith and

communion with the Catholic Church, Saint Andrew parish is here to help. Have them visit

www.standrew.org/rcia or contact David Heimann, our Pastoral Associate at [email protected].

The inquiry process is now open and will continue until September for the upcoming Rites of Christian

Initiation for Adults (RCIA). Please share this information with anyone you know who may be interested.

Religious Education - Registration Now Open for 2019-2020

For students who attend public and private schools and are in need of religious education, we offer a

mixed Family-based and volunteer catechist Religious Education program for students in Kindergarten

through 8th grade. The classes generally meet on Sunday mornings from 8:45am to 9:50am starting on

Sunday, September 8, 2019. Any previously enrolled student is automatically enrolled for the upcoming

year. Any new students should enroll online through our website at www.standrew.org/re

The tentative calendar for the upcoming year ahead is now available on the website.

Our mission is fulfilled when we enter the world and in the presence of our friends, our co-workers, and

especially our families, we are more capable of loving one another, as we have been loved.

August 4th is National Friendship Day! When was the last time

you prayed for a friend, or invited them to pray with you?

Praying for each other is an important way we show love, so try

taking it one step further this weekend - tell a friend you are

praying for them. Explain that you'll pray for their career, their

family, or an unknown difficulty they are facing. You’ll make an

impact… you might inspire them to pray, too! What a friend!

Give our youth a hand as they make their first trip to the National

Catholic Youth Convention (www.ncyc.info). There is a significant

cost involved in attending and we could use your help!

Make your donation directly and securely through Give Central -

head to www.givecentral.org, search for Saint Andrew Parish, and

then donate to Youth and Young Adult Ministry. Or contact Megan

Daigle at our parish rectory by calling 773-525-3016, or emailing

[email protected]. Thank you for encouraging our teens!

If you are reading this bulletin, chances are you attend mass at

Saint Andrew. Take advantage of this special time in your

weekend to serve as a Lector or Eucharistic minister. You will

grow in your faith and strengthen community relationships without

complicating your busy schedule!

Contact Deacon Eric to schedule a training. [email protected]

Last month 153 households supported Saint

Andrew’s Sunday Offertory through electronic

giving. Our goal by the end of the year is to reach

200 households giving electronically by the end of

the year. Electronic giving helps to normalize our

budget and yours and allows for support of the

parish even when travel and unexpected

circumstances arise.

Please learn more about electronic giving at
