New Year’s Reception 2017-2018

New Year’s Reception

2017-2018

Introduction And that’s a wrap! Thank you very much for coming to the New Year’s Reception (or if you didn’t

and are reading this, we’re looking forward to seeing you next year)! We hope you had a blast—

after all, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Yet sometimes seriousness is indeed

warranted, and on that note, we also hope you found the information you were looking for at the

reception, whether you wanted help on deciding between Chemical Engineering and Materials

Science as a field of study, were looking for an internship for this summer, or were probing the

job market for opportunities out in the “real world”.

This year, MaChT has more (and more diverse) sponsors than it’s ever had, so we’re confident

there was at least one company present at the New Year’s Reception that tickled your fancy,

regardless of your interests or expertise. Not forgetting the Ph.D. students, of course! To jog your

memory regarding all these sponsors, we’ve compiled this booklet of short descriptions and/or

job offers for positions that are currently open and up for grabs.

Remember that if you are interested in applying for an internship or a job that was presented to

you, start that process on time. We can tell you from personal experience that applications often

take longer than you would expect! Of course, don’t forget to keep your curriculum vitae up to

date either!

An additional tip: if you’re looking for an internship but couldn’t make it to the New Year’s

Reception or somehow didn’t find anything that speaks to you, make an appointment with a

professor in your department. They can often provide you with the contact information of

companies they are familiar with.

Good luck with your future career! Think like a proton, and stay positive! (*Badum-tsss*)

BASF

Hey medeburgies!

Ik herinner me

We kregen

Groetjes,

Jolien Stevens

Ph.D. Students UGent Chemical Engineering—Laboratory for Chemical Technology

The LCT is well known as a first-rate research institute. The finest academics from all over the world are

joining our team. We integrate chemical science and engineering in its research on catalysis, polymerisa-

tion, kinetics, reactor design and process design. Our close collaboration with industrial R&D centres is

demonstrated by the many joint projects. Various incentives can inspire you to participate in courses and

conferences, and to do scientific work with associated universities abroad. We are always looking forward

to having more Ph.D. students in our group. You can find the vacancies on our website!

Chemical/Sustainable Materials Engineering—Centre for Molecular Modelling

The CMM focuses on frontier research in six major areas - chemical kinetics in nanoporous materials,

computational materials science on the nanoscale, spectroscopy, many-particle physics, model

development, and bio- and organic chemistry. The basis of the CMM’s success lies in the interdisciplinary

composition of its research team which consists of chemists, chemical engineers, physicists, physical

engineers and bio-engineers. Our research is performed at an international level in collaboration with a

strong network of partners from Flemish and European universities. Together, materials scientists and

chemical engineers focus on understanding existing and upcoming catalytically active materials on a

molecular level, to tackle some of the challenging problems the chemical industry is facing.

Sustainable Materials Engineering—Metal Science and Engineering

By doing a Ph.D. at the Sustainable Materials Science research group, you become part of a young and

dynamic team. It allows you to have a positive impact on people’s lives by looking for sustainable solu-

tions to problems related to industrial materials. You have the opportunity to work in an independent

way around your own project, which can be in cooperation with the industry, or you can choose a more

fundamental research approach.

Sustainable Materials Engineering—Polymers and Fibre Structures

While the start of each Ph.D. might be quite similar (starting up your research, finding your way in the

education department), the Centre for Textile Science and Engineering certainly offers a great group of

colleagues who are eager to help you get on your way. The first couple of weeks are hard, working on

your FWO scholarship application and preparing the defence over and over again, but through hard work

and the support you get from both colleagues and professors, you get through it. After starting up your

research, the liberty of steering your subject in the direction you want is one of the great benefits of

doing a Ph.D.
