GOVERNMENT INVESTS IN SASKATCHEWAN’S FUTUREgov.ca -$20 Million in Additional Funding for Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan Families will benefit from 24 addi-tional inpatient beds to be added to the Children’s Hospital of Saskatch-ewan following an additional $20 million investment by the Govern-ment of Saskatchewan. Ours is a growing province with increased need for children’s and maternal health services,” Health Minister Dustin Duncan said. “In-
creasing the number of beds will en-sure that we can meet the needs of infants, children and mothers, now and into the future. We need to get the size of the facility right to reflect our province’s growing population.” The original project scope includ-ed the construction of a 152-bed children’s hospital. The $20 million in additional funding will add 24 in-patient beds for a total of 176 private inpatient beds. This will increase the overall size of the hospital by 11 per cent or approximately 38,000 square feet, and bring total provincial in-

vestment in the Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan to $235.5 million. Since the hospital’s early design in 2011, Saskatchewan has hit an all-time high of more than 1.1 mil-lion people living in the province, with the second highest growth rate among the 10 provinces in 2013, behind only Alberta. “We are grateful for the provin-cial government’s commitment and support in ensuring Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan is de-signed and built for the future,” Saskatoon Regional Health Au-thority Board Chair Jim Rhode said. “We have worked to do our due diligence in ensuring the hos-pital is the right size before the shovels hit the ground and we started construction.” “As we were nearing completion of blueprints, we saw continued pressure in children’s and maternal health services,” Chair of Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan Steering Committee and Vice-President Integrated Health Services, Saska-toon Health Region Jackie Mann said. “We felt we had to validate our planned bed numbers be-fore we started construction and ensure those numbers were still appropriate given what we were seeing today and the implications for the future. This investment in additional beds recognizes our province’s tremendous growth and ensures we will meet the needs of Saskatchewan residents into the future.” “The Children’s Hospital Founda-tion of Saskatchewan understands that major projects such as build-ing a children’s hospital is com-plex,” Children’s Hospital Foun-dation of Saskatchewan President and CEO Brynn Boback-Lane said. “We are grateful that our donors have been very generous and patient and we are all mindful
that with the recent increase in our province’s population, it is prudent to ensure that this facility is able to meet new demands within pediat-ric and maternal care.“The Foundation is steadfast in our support to fundraise for this hospital and confident in the proj-ect moving forward, to ensure that Saskatchewan has an efficient Children’s Hospital for every child and family that will need it.” The facility requires new design work to accommodate the 24 new beds, and the hospital’s schedule has shifted by approximately five months. Construction is expect-ed to start in September 2014 with the hospital scheduled to open in 2017.

terrible! I’m going to have a talk with your teacher about this ... by the way,
what was it that you didn’t do?”The little girl replied, “My homework.”

Just like at a wine tasting, the new version of an old soft drink is swirled around in fancy stemmed glasses. The verdict on New Coke sounds more like the latest vintages review. “Smoother, rounder, yet bolder,” says Coca-Cola chair Roberto Goizueta. But one official “taster” is disappointed with the new for-mula. She says it’s like the can has been left open in the fridge overnight -- flat and sickly sweet. Changing the Coca-Cola formula is a big move for the con-glomerate. The secret formula, kept locked away in an Atlanta bank vault, has remained exactly the same for nearly a century. In 1903, Coca-Cola changed its recipe because the soda had too much of the “real thing” -- cocaine. Rival employees at Pepsi predict the change to Coke will turn out to be a big mistake. Pepsi even got a day off to celebrate Coke’s gaffe. Roger Enrico of Pepsico explains, “These two products, Pepsi and Coke, have been going at it eyeball-to-eyeball. And in my view the other just blinked.”
• Consumer complaints about New Coke prompted the com-pany to bring back the less sweet version three months later. Voting polls at malls, grocery stores and amusement parks found that most Canadians wanted old Coke back. • The company reintroduced the old product but called it Co-ca-Cola Classic instead.• Coca-Cola kept New Coke on the market. A year and a half after New Coke was introduced, the classic version outsold the new formula five to one. • The new Coke v. old Coke debate amassed so much atten-tion that some speculated introducing New Coke had been a planned marketing campaign. • At the time, soft drinks rated as the most-consumed beverage in the United States. Coffee and beer came second and third respectively. • In Canada, coffee was most popular, with milk ranking second, beer third and soft drinks fourth. • Strict cola drinkers say the best way to im-bibe the drink is to buy it by the bottle (never in a can or plastic bottle), refrigerate and pour slowly over ice into a wide-mouthed glass. Too much foam eliminates carbon-ation, which is bad, according to aficionados.• In his book Big Secrets, William Poundstone claims Coke’s ingredients are as follows: sug-ar, caramel, caffeine, phosphoric, coca leaf extract (with cocaine removed), cola nut extract, citric acid, sodium citrate, lemon, orange, lime, cassia and nutmeg oils.
Also on April 24: • 1942: Anne of Green Gables author Lucy Maud Montgomery dies at age 68 in Toronto. • 1951: The 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry wins a U.S. presi-dential citation for its efforts in repelling Chinese and North Korean forces in the Battle of Kapyong in South Korea. • 2005: Benedict XVI is installed as Pope after celebrating an inaugural mass.

GEt A SprinG tunE-up!
Spring is here, and just like your house may need a spring cleaning, your car may need a spring tune-up. Cars take a lot of abuse in the win-ter, especially if you live in an area prone to snow, ice and extremely cold weather. It is a good idea to take your car in once the weather starts to turn warmer to prevent a domino effect of things going wrong. If you skip regular tune-ups, and something is wrong with your car, that one mal-function can affect many other parts of your car. Before you know it, you might have a hefty repair bill! Also, if you plan to spend your spring and summer vacations on the road, it is always important to make sure your car will get you to where you want to go! A good way to ruin a vacation is to end up spending half of it waiting for your car to get out of an unfamiliar mechanic’s shop. If you would have used the place you know and trust at home before you left, you could have prevented this extra cost and delay of your vacation. To avoid this, it is important to keep on top of your regular maintenance schedule. Check your records and see when your last regular tune-up was. If you are due for another, the spring is a good time to get it. You can make sure the car was not damaged by that constant cold weather or trips up to the mountains to ski. You may also want to have the mechanics check your cooling system. Have them pressure test the system for leaks, inspect all connections, and check the condition of your belts, hoses, and coolant mix. If your cooling system fails, you cannot drive your car. No one wants to be stranded on a beautiful spring or summer day because they didn’t have their cooling system checked. Also, have your mechanic check your emission system (if it hasn’t been checked in the past year). Another benefit of regular checkups is that they may prevent you from getting in an accident. What if you didn’t get your brakes checked and they failed right when you least expected it? Not only could this endanger your life (and the lives of your passengers), it can also make your auto insurance costs go up, not to mention the repair costs for the damage to your car.
Combat Rising Gas Prices - Not only do regular tune-ups prevent unwanted breakdowns, they also help you save money on gas. Some mechanics estimate that a poorly tuned engine can use up to 50 percent more gas than one that is running well. As gas is by no means cheap these days, why would you want to fill up your engine twice as often if you could have prevented it? Here are some other tips, besides keeping your engine well tuned, to help save you gas:Drive at Steady Speeds - Driving steadily at the speed limit can really help cut down on your vehicle’s gas consumption. Stops and starts take more gas, so try to anticipate stops and traffic flow ahead of you as much as possible. Driving your car too fast can really cost you, both with regard to gas and the speeding ticket you might receive!Keep your tires properly inflated - The proper inflation for your tires should be specified in your owner’s manual. If your tires are under-inflated, your vehicle will consume more gas when you drive.Try to minimize your driving - Try to plan one long trip instead of sever-al short trips. If you can, try to carpool, use alternate transportation (buses, trains, subways) or ride your bike or walk if your destination is nearby and you can spare the time. These are obvious ways to save gas, and they have the additional benefit of helping to spare the environment.
So, make an appointment for a spring tune-up today. Getting regular tune-ups can save you time and money.
