The goal of the program is to provide students with additionaloptions to continue or complete their education in subjects in which they have exhausted current courseofferingsatthehighschool.Ifacceptedintotheprogram,NewbergSchoolDistrictcoversthecostoftuitionandfees.Tobeeligibletoapply,thestudentmustbe:

• 16yearsofageorolderatthetimeofenrollmentandingrade11or12• Currentlyenrolledinhighschool,and• Ontracktocompletecourserequirementsforgraduation

All sophomores and juniors are mailed information about EOP and an Intent to Enroll form in February.InterestedstudentsmustcompletetheIntenttoEnrollformandreturnittheCounselingCenterbythespecifieddate.Interestedstudentsshouldcontacttheircounselor.

ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS

FlexiblePathwaysCenterTheFlexiblePathwaysCenterisanopportunityforstudentstorecovercredit inaclass inwhichtheypreviouslyearnedagradeof"F."Mostcorecontentclassesareavailablethroughastudent'scounselorrecommendation.Online learning expandsoptions for students toget backon track for graduation.Studentsworkindependentlyandarenotchargedafee,unlikesummerschool.Creditisgrantedinthesame manner as other courses and the courses are managed by a licensed teacher. Successfulcandidates for credit recovery have good attendance, are self-motivated, and are ready to takeresponsibilityfortheir learninggoals.Basickeyboardingskillsarealsoveryhelpful.NOTE:CannotbeusedtomeetNCAAcorecourserequirements.CatalystCatalyst High School is an alternative program, on a separate campus from, NHS, with a variety ofoptions designed tomeet the educationalneedsof studentswhohavestruggled tobesuccessful inothersettings.CatalystOptionsThe Discovery Program: Discovery serves as an orientation to the program with the goal of skillbuilding in the area of working in a group, communication, angermanagement, conflict resolution,problemsolving,andassertiveness.Wefocusonhowtotreateachotherwithdignityandrespectandformahealthycommunity.Thisprogramisthe“gateway”forRealWorldCatalyst.“RealWorld” Catalyst: After students graduate fromDiscovery, they are scheduled into a full-time,five-periodday from 9:00am-2:45pm. These classes cover all of the requirements for a NewbergorOregonhighschooldiploma.Catalystoffersclasses ina smallersetting,withaverageclassunder20,staffwhopayscarefulattentiontohealthy,assertiverelationshipsandaculturemarkedbydignityandrespectforall.Distance Ed: For the self-motivated, academically talented student, distance ed students work ononlineclassesdailyfromhomewithregularprocessmonitoringandgoal-setting.Thesestudentsareaccountabletoreportweeklyface-to-faceandaccessforinstructionasneeded.Goodcommunicationviaemailandtelephoneisalsoakeyelementtosuccessinthisprogram.Extension: Themorningextensionis from8-11,M-F. Instruction isonlinewith theBlendedLearningmodel. This is for students who have not had behavioral issues but have been unsuccessful inDiscoveryorRealWorldCatalystorarewaitingtobeacceptedorearntheirwaybackintooneofthoseprograms.Catalystschoolyearconsistsofsix,six-weekLearningCyclesinwhichastudentcanearn.25foreachcoursetheyareenrolledinandpass.CreditsareearnedbasedonproficiencyinOregonStateStandards (including the Common Core Standards) for each subject area. Graduates of Catalystcomplete the credit requirements set forth by the School Board and earn a Newberg High Schooldiploma or Oregon Diploma. CO-CURRICULAR ATHLETICS

The Newberg School District considers co-curricular activities to be an integral part of the totaleducational program. Participation in these activities often provides the best opportunity for thedevelopment of student citizenship. Therefore, all students should be given the opportunity toparticipateinco-curricularactivities.Theco-curricularprogram,whetheraparticularsport,activityoracombinationofbothinourschool, isabodyofpeopleandprocedures that sharescommongoals.Thegoals includeprovidinganenjoyableexperienceandcreatinganatmospherewhereall studentscan:

Through participation in various co-curricular programs, students can develop into well-roundedindividuals. Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities. Lessons learned in co-curricular activities increase success for students in school, and outside the school setting. Positivestudentbehaviorinthecommunityleadstoamorepositiveimageofyoungpeople,andcanenhancecommunitysupportforallschoolprograms.BenefitsofCo-curricularActivitiesActivitiesSupporttheAcademicMissionofSchools.Theyarenotadiversionbutratheranextensionof a good educational program. Students who participate in activity programs tend to have highergrade-pointaverages,betterattendance records, lowerdropout ratesand fewerdisciplineproblemsthanstudentsgenerally.Activities are Inherently Educational. Activity programs provide valuable lessons for practicalsituations – teamwork, sportsmanship,winning and losing, and hardwork. Through participation inactivity programs, students learn self-discipline, build self-confidence and develop skills to handlecompetitivesituations.Thesearequalities thepublicexpects schools toproduce in students so thattheybecomeresponsibleadultsandproductivecitizens.ActivitiesFosterSuccessinLaterLife.Participationinhighschoolactivitiesisoftenapredictoroflatersuccess–incollege,acareerandbecomingacontributingmemberofsociety.

CO-CURRICULAR ATHLETICS

AcademicRequirementsStudentathletesmustpassatleastfiveclassesthesemesterbeforetheirseasonbegins,andmustbeenrolled in at least fivecreditbearing classes throughout thesport season to satisfyOSAA rules foreligibility. In addition, students must also meet graduation credit requirements established by theOSAA. Failure to do sowill result in immediate ineligibility for the athlete.Newberg School Districtpolicyrequiresthatstudentshavenofailinggrades,andachievea2.0+GPAinthesemesterbeforetheseasonbegins inordertoparticipate inathleticsand/oractivities.StudentswithoneFand/ora1.5+GPAmayqualifyforprobationonetimeeachschoolyear,allowingthemtocontinuetoparticipate.Fordetailsontherequirementsfortheprobation,studentsshouldcontacttheAthleticoffice.NCAAStudentswhowishtoparticipateinathleticsincollegeshouldvisittheNCAAClearinghousewebsiteathttp://eligibilitycenter.org and register with the Clearinghouse at the end of their junior year.
