Co-curricular Program and Additional Activities Overview
A holistic education is the basis for a successful and balanced life. Holistic education is of the mind, body and spirit. Over the years, the students of the School who have excelled have thoroughly embraced the Co-curricular Program that Newcastle Grammar School has to offer, which incorporates: • Sport • Performing Arts • Music • SATU • Intellectual / Creative
The purpose of education and a foundation stone of the Newcastle Grammar School ethos is the development of the whole person. For these reasons an educational program must embody, as an essential element, activities that involve students beyond the classroom and foster the values that result from interaction and united effort. Such activities form a logical extension of the required and general curriculum as well as the elective or special curriculum. NGS provides a Co-curricular program that is part of the holistic education of the School that mirrors the values of the School: Respect, Integrity, Service and Excellence. In this way, Co-curricular at NGS will promote: • A successful and balanced life • The development of the whole person • Teamwork and integrity • Individual and team performance
The minimum level of compulsory participation for ALL Year 5 to 10 students is one (1) Co-curricular activity during the school year.
Consequently, parents are encouraged to support the School in its mission to develop the whole individual by ensuring that their child/children are fully involved in the program and attend all associated obligations of their chosen activity.
1. Please be aware that it is possible, and strongly encouraged, that a student be involved in a combination of activities; e.g. Sport, Performing Arts, Music, SATU or Intellectual / Creative.
2. The School reserves the right to decline the running of an activity should there be an insufficient number of students who nominate for registration.
3. Students will nominate their chosen selection at the end of 2019 ready for the commencement of school in 2020.
4. Once a child has registered for their Co-curricular activity they should not withdraw as this can have a major impact on teams. Therefore, please select wisely. It is better to see the staff and see if you can be added to activities later in the year as opposed to withdrawing and letting a team down. Note: Withdrawal post commencement of an activity may incur part or full costs.
5. Please be aware where possible the School will be using outside expert coaches to develop the skills of all students, all of whom hold a current Working With Children Check.

Sporting Opportunities
Co-Curricular Sports A wide and varied Co-curricular sports program is offered, allowing our students the opportunity to include themselves in sports they have played for several years, as well as some activities they have courageously selected for the first time. Training sessions, coaching and transport to and from training are all included in this area of our program.
Other opportunities It is extremely difficult for any program to offer activities that suit the needs of every student. Occasionally, there are more appropriate options that can be included within our program, provided locally by external governing bodies. These have been listed in the following information as Other Opportunities, and students are encouraged to investigate these as another source of regular physical activity.
HISSA Weekly Sporting Competition In 2019, several Hunter Region Independent Schools within the greater Newcastle area agreed upon a weekly sporting competition that began in Term 2. Students are transported to and from games and training sessions, and may play in either a Year 7 & 8 or Year 9 & 10 division in any of the following sports: Term 1 – TBC Term 2 & 3 – Boys and Girls Rugby 7’s Term 4 – Boys and Girls Basketball Allowing our students to play growing sports against similar minded schools on a regular basis has been extremely popular. Newcastle Grammar School will continue to support this initiative and ensure the synergy between our Co-curricular, representative and mid-week sports provides even more opportunity for our students to flourish.
NGS Representative team selection This area within our program focuses on gala day and carnival opportunities for our students. Whilst most of these are within our local Hunter Region Independent Schools association (Athletics, Basketball, Cross Country, Hockey, Netball, Soccer, Swimming, Tennis and Touch Football), there are many others that may be on offer that fall outside this direct pathway (e.g. AFL, Futsal, Netball NSW Gala Days, Rugby 7’s and Snow Sports).

Representative team selection within the School Sport Australia pathway
Our emerging and elite athletes are selected to attend these school representative team trials based on several factors, including NGS and representative playing history, as well as likely standard of the trial. FUTSAL General Information
A fast and exciting variation of 5-a-side Soccer played indoors on a hard court. The Futsal season begins in late August, concluding with finals in February. Games are held on weeknights (traditionally Tuesday or Wednesday evenings between 5:30pm and 9:00pm and are dependent upon age group and the draw). Games are held at Genesis (Cooks Hill Commercial Centre) or the International Hockey Centre, Broadmeadow.

RUGBY 7’s General Information
An action-packed version of the full sided game, Rugby 7s is played by seven players in seven-minute halves. During Terms 2 and 3, NGS students can participate in training sessions and regular weekday matches as a part of the HISSA competition. Games are conducted every two or three weeks and are played from approximately 2:30-4:30pm.

TOUCH FOOTBALL
General Information
During Term 4, NGS students will compete in the local Touch Football competition run
by Merewether Carlton Junior Rugby Union Club. Games are traditionally every half an
hour 4:00pm to 7:30pm at Gibbs Brothers Oval, Rowan Crescent, Merewether, on
Tuesday or Wednesday evenings (age / gender dependent). Training commences mid-
September and concludes late November with sessions held at National Park. At times,
players will train, and immediately be transported to the game venue for their match.
Ages Years 5-11 Training Wednesday 3:15pm – 4:45pm Uniform All students are expected to wear the Touch Football shirt included in the registration
fee, available from the MIC Touch Football prior to the first-round game. This shirt is to be worn with NGS shorts/NGS bike pants available from the Uniform Shop.

NETBALL General Information
NGS Netball teams are entered in the local Newcastle Netball Association competitions. Grading is a complicated process involving detailed discussion of previous year’s performances as well as meeting at an association level. An U10 grading day is hosted by the association and is traditionally held in late February.
Where possible, no more than ten players will be named to a team, maximizing developmental potential of all players within a team. All teams, 12 years and above, are rostered for umpiring duties. This involves two girls on each occasion and occurs roughly every second week.
Canteen duties are a compulsory aspect of participation within the Newcastle Netball Association, with all teams required to undertake canteen duty at least once during the season. Games are played every Saturday commencing early April and concluding early September at the below approximate times. Students will be required to play netball on some Saturdays during both Easter and the July School holiday breaks. 7, 8 & 9 years 8:30am 10 & 11 years 9:30am 12 & 13 years 10:45am 14 & 15 years 12:00pm Cadets (16 & 17 years) 12.00pm or 1:15pm Under 21 1:15pm
Students wishing to follow a pathway through the umpiring ranks will be offered a new opportunity. This is for umpires just starting out as well as those who have already gained accreditation. Students would participate on Wednesday afternoons as well as specific timeslots on Saturdays. The opportunity to play as well as umpire is available. Once qualified, umpires are paid by NNA for officiating.
Ages Girls in Years 5 to 12 Training Wednesday 3:15pm – 4:45pm at National Park Netball Courts, or 3:15-5:00pm at Hill
Campus courts (depending on team placement). Training will commence from early February, with wet weather / alternate sessions planned in the event of poor weather.

ROWING General Information
The NGS Rowing program caters for all ability levels; from recreational athletes, competitive and aspiring performance level athletes. Students can participate in as little as one session per week, or as many as ten. Please see our NGS Rowing Parent Handbook for further information available on Schoolbox. All training sessions are conducted by qualified and experienced coaches with the season commencing mid Term 3 and continuing through to the end of Term 1.

Regatta Schedule
Our rowing team participate in several regattas ranging from those in the Hunter region to NSW State level regattas in Sydney. Across the season our program competes in up to sixteen regattas. Our Year 6 rowers will experience their first regatta in February of 2020, four months after they begin their rowing journey. This time period is to ensure their development has reached a safe level for regatta racing. We host an internal regatta to allow these students to practice racing before they get to the real deal! Year 7 – 12 rowers will be regatta racing in October 2020.
Travel/Transport Please see our Parent Information Handbook on Schoolbox for further details on Travel and Transport arrangements. Many of our students Car Pool to training to lessen the demand on parents for the morning sessions.
Uniform Competition and training zoot-suits, caps and sun protective items are available from the Uniform Shop.
Cost Approximate cost for Year 6 is $550 (based on a reduced participation) and Year 7-12 is $680. This fee will include student’s membership, registration and insurance with NSW Rowing Association and Central District Rowing Association, seat fees, school bus transfers and other costs associated with the running of the program. Costs associated with camps and regattas will be charged in addition to the above.

SAILING General Information
Newcastle Grammar School has partnered with the NCYC to deliver a staged sailing program, where they can gain accreditation via the Australian Sailing Keelboat pathway. Instructors are trained by Australian Sailing with a focus on safety and fun on the water. Students will work their way through the various levels as part of the Co-curricular program, with the possibility of inter-school racing as they gain more experience. Sessions occur at Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club, 95 Hannell Street, Wickham, and may be cancelled at any time if the weather conditions are not suitable
Courses/Pathway
Stage 1 Start Crewing - students will learn all about boat handling, safety and some theory behind sailing. Students will learn tacking, jibing and man over board recovery. Stage 2 (Part 1) Start Helming - students will learn to prepare the boat, helm and trim the sails, and recovery of man overboard whilst at the helm of the boat. Stage 2 (Part 2) Start Skipping - students will learn to assess risks on board, boat maintenance, actions in an emergency, sailing backwards, mooring, interrupting weather and environmental conditions. Stage 3 Spinnakers - students learn to set up spinnakers, hoist and drop techniques, and the correct use of the spinnaker.

TAEKWONDO General Information
This sport allows participants to train as individuals in a group setting, working on technique and patterns to achieve belts at grading intervals. Although participants train together, the program is designed for students to work at their own level to achieve their personal goals. Students regularly use belt promotion tests as their competition phase of Taekwondo.
Rhee Taekwondo involves dynamic techniques of unarmed combat for self-defensive, discipline and mental strength purposes, combining the skilled application of powerful punches, flying kicks, blocks, dodges and interceptions.
Ages Years 5 to 12 Training Friday 3:15pm – 4:45pm at Park Campus, Sandi Warren Performance Centre Uniform Students will need to purchase a uniform with registration Cost Parents are notified about each term’s fees at the start of the School year. Fees are
based on the number of weeks (approximately $200 per term.) Parents may pay term by term or annually directly to Rhee Taekwondo. An annual registration fee of $50 is paid on enrollment. Uniforms are purchased separately (approximately $90). All figures are based on 2019.

TENNIS General Information
During Term 3, NGS students compete in the local junior Tennis competition run by
District Park Tennis Centre. Trials will be held during the end of Term 2 and competition
details will be communicated with registered players closer to the time. Matches are
played on Saturday afternoons 12:00pm to 2:00pm; or 2:00pm to 4:00pm with all
training, trials and games held at District Park Tennis Centre, Broadmeadow.

Tennis Australia provide regular competition for beginner to intermediate level players wishing to extend their game through round robin style tournament match play through regionalized competitions called the Junior Development Series. SURF BRONZE MEDALLION / LIFESAVING / PATROLS General Information
This activity is for students interested in lifesaving and conducting patrols at Cooks Hills.
Ages Years 9 to 12 (must be 15 years or above, owing to assessment age criteria for assessment)
Training Wednesday 6:00pm – 8:00pm at Cooks Hill Surf Club, Memorial Drive, Bar Beach.
This course is run by external providers and students will be in a course with members of the club and other members of the public.
Training will include a practical component at an agreed time over the weekend (generally Saturday mornings between 8:00am-10:00am), allowing students to meet the outcomes of the competency-based course. Once the course is completed, students are assigned approximately nine patrols over the summer. Students will then be required to patrol for a second season to meet the requirements of this activity. In the second year, opportunities for further training in advanced resuscitation, IRB and other club awards are offered.
Uniform Surf Club uniform provided
Cost Course materials and provider costs for the Advanced First Aid total $290 (As of 2019). Membership to Cook's Hill Surf Club is also payable directly to the club and is $100 for those under 18 years of age.

PERFORMING ARTS
MUSICAL THEATRE / DRAMA
General Information
This class will cover the rudiments of acting, music theatre dance and ensemble singing. Through drama games, harmony/vocal production work and simple dance routines, this class will be good for those who wish to develop their performance skills, gain some self-confidence in a supportive environment or just have fun! Students of all experiences are encouraged to enroll; however, this class will be aimed at beginner/intermediate level. There may be some opportunity for solo work throughout the year. Participants in this class will be expected to perform at an end-of-semester concert. Adequate notice will be given for these performances.

Please Note: Brass RaZoo - is by audition only and is dependent upon places available. Brass RaZoo is the School’s Senior Big Band and is for students who are interested in learning and performing Jazz and Contemporary Music of many genres. The ensemble is in demand and supports events across our School and in the wider community. Bamboozle - is by placement audition and is dependent upon places available. Bamboozle is an ensemble for students who want to learn skills associated with Jazz performance in a small group setting. This ensemble assists students of all levels to develop their skills at their own pace and has several performance opportunities during the year.
Chamber Choir - is by audition and dependent on places available. To be considered for this group, students progressing from Year 8 to 9 should have spent at least one year in Grammarphones. Participation in Rock Band will depend on places available. The Chamber Choir is the senior choral group of NGS which supports our School’s Chapel Services and performs regularly in the Newcastle Community. Grammarphones- A dynamic vocal ensemble, the Grammarphones is a choir for students in year 5-8. Performing at major annual concerts, Speech Night and Chapel services, this ensemble encourages developing voices through a variety of mixed repertoire. The culture of this ensemble promotes positive music making in an inclusive and stimulating environment. Stringendo- A non-auditioned ensemble, Stringendo is an intermediate level training ensemble of approximately 25 string musicians in year 5 to 8. Stringendo, meaning to ”move forward” provides enthusiastic young string players the opportunity to further develop technical and ensemble skills in music while enjoying the fellowship of performing with peers. The ensemble performs regularly at School assemblies and Chapel services at both the Junior and Senior Schools. Concert Band – is for students in Years 5 to 10 who play wind, brass or percussion instruments. Our Concert Band learns and plays many styles of music and is a versatile ensemble. This ensemble supports several events during the year and greatly assists student’s individual instrumental technique development as well as their ensemble skills. Symphony Orchestra – is for students in Years 7 – 12 who have achieved 3rd Grade standard on their instrument or the equivalent. Entry is by audition and is dependent on places available. The Symphony Orchestra learns a wide range of music from well-known popular classical repertoire to contemporary works which challenge the youngest to most experienced players in the ensemble. SERVICE AND ADVENTURE TRAINING UNIT (SATU) SATU
General Information
The Service and Adventure Training Unit is offered to your child as a Co-curricular activity of our School. Year 7 students may join in Term 4. Students in Years 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 may join at any stage throughout the year. Australian Army Cadet Corps: The Australian Army Cadets (AAC) are a component of the Australian Services Cadet Scheme. The Aim of the Australian Services Cadet Scheme is: “By shared contribution and commitment from the Australian Defence Force and the community, the Australian Services’ Cadet Scheme will operate as a community based youth training organisation, which stimulates interest in the Australian Defence Force, while providing opportunities to develop personal and team qualities of benefit to the individual and the community”.
All members of the AAC are subject to the Cadet Forces Regulations and the Australian Army Cadet Corps Policy Manual. The School Service and Adventure Training Unit aims to strike a balance between offering adventurous military training to our Cadets within the School context. The Service and Adventure Training Unit aims to encourage and foster in its members’ the following qualities:
• Leadership • Initiative • Community Service • Discipline • Independence • Teamwork • Self-confidence • Adventure • Proficiency in outdoor pursuits
Leadership Qualifications – obtained through the Australian Army Cadets Cadets in Years 9, 10 and 11 are able to obtain nationally recognised leadership qualifications. The skills associated with leadership are highly valued in the workplace and in society generally. ‘ Leadership T hrough Cadets’ is designed to enable participants to acquire a range of technical, practical, personal and organisational skills associated with leadership. Potentially the courses will afford them a real advantage in the competitive quest for scholarships and jobs, but more importantly will equip them with vital life skills.

INTELLECTUAL / CREATIVE ACTIVITIES
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE General Information
This program is dedicated to teaching the students the benefits of ‘thinking outside of the square’ through creative painting and creative ideas, gaining expert tuition from Ms Sophie Mill. Sophie Mill is an internationally recognised contemporary artist and author. Ms Mill has been a practicing contemporary artist for over 20 years with back-to-back exhibitions in Australia, Italy and the USA. Ms Mill studied with the Billy Blue School of Art, The National Art School, Julian Ashton Art School and Sotheby’s Institute of Art, New York.
Each student will develop an understanding of the philosophy of being an artist. That is, it is the job of the artist to define, decide and shape his/her artwork. The class covers many dimensions about language, perspective, spatial awareness, and the philosophy of painting. Ms Mill uses the Socratic method of teaching to enhance thought patterns, personality and the ability of the students to investigate their limits. Through deliberate questioning they are encouraged to think from different perspectives and therefore develop the process of decision-making. The activity is available to all students, they do not have to be Visual Arts students – anyone interested in creativity, painting and Visual Arts is welcome. Students will be required to commit to the Program for a minimum of one semester. To ensure maximal development, class sizes are limited to fourteen students in each session.

CHINESE HERITAGE General Information
The Newcastle Grammar School Chinese Heritage class teaches children with Chinese background to write Chinese characters, at the same time, consolidate their speaking of Mandarin and introduce Chinese culture. This will allow them to communicate fluently in both spoken and written forms by Year 8. They are encouraged to undertake the courses of Chinese in Context as their stage 6 subjects. We encourage all eligible students from the Newcastle Grammar School to be part of these classes.

DEBATING / PUBLIC SPEAKING General Information
Debating and public speaking give students the confidence and experience of speaking in front of an audience and the ability to think quickly, use their voices effectively and present information using logical argument to affirm or negate a topic. Weekly meetings will primarily be used as preparation time for actual debates as well as friendly debates between teams to build skills and knowledge about the process. No prior experience is necessary for debating or public speaking as the after-school sessions will provide ongoing specific direction about rules, expectations, topics and process. Rounds are held in Terms 1 and 2, with Finals in Term 3.

Other Opportunities
There are several competitions we are eligible to join in both debating and public speaking. These include: HICES Debating, HRIS Debating, Virtual Debating, The Sydney Morning Herald Plain Speaking Award (Senior), The Legacy Public Speaking Award (Junior), The Evatt Competition – UN Youth Australia.
We aim to have at least one team from each year level to compete in Virtual Debating, HICES debating and encourage students to make expressions of interest in the November prior to the start of the season (February) in order to register our teams which must be done in December. Students are required to deliver prepared debates in Junior and Middle Divisions.
The competition rounds for debating commence in February and continue through to June. Teams that have accumulated enough winning points then proceed through to finals rounds which culminate in the Grand Final held at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney. Public speaking competitions are held throughout Term 2 primarily and involve regional rounds and Sydney finals. UN Youth Australia also hold regional rounds, the winners of which proceed through to finals generally held in Sydney. SCIENCE CLUB General Information
Science Club is an exciting Co-curricular activity offered to students in Years 7-9 for Terms 2 and 3. The programme affords students the opportunity to participate in activities designed to extend their passion for all things scientific. Challenges incorporating multifaceted aspects of the scientific world are presented to the students. These may include:
• Preparing entries into competitions hosted by organisations such as CSIRO, RACI, Landcare
• Participating in excursions to venues such as the museum and/or Blackbutt Reserve

CODING General Information
Coding: Whether you have an ability or not in coding this course allows for students to develop advanced skills in programming languages. Using various mediums students will learn how to write code for a given task or even develop their own software application. Drawing on knowledge from outside sources such as the University of Newcastle students will learn how to compete in competitions such as GovHack NSW and GovHack Australia where they can earn real prize money.

DESIGN, MAKING & MECHATRONICS General Information
This Co-curricular allows students to engage in maker culture. Maker culture is a technology-based DIY culture which focusses on the creation of new devices as well as tinkering with existing ones. Students can utilise a range of technology tools, such as 3D computer design, 3D printing, Arduino boards, sensors, actuators and much more. Students are encouraged to work on projects of their own choice to solve authentic problems in which they have an interest. Perhaps an alarm to detect a sibling intruder for your bedroom, a temperature controller for the greenhouse or even a drone! Previous knowledge is not necessary in order to take part in this Co-curricular.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH General Information
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is available to any young person looking for challenge, adventure and personal development, including those with specific difficulties or needs. Young people between the ages of 14 and 25 years are able to participate in the Bronze, Silver or Gold Award Program. Young people participating in the awards are encouraged to learn through experience and to enjoy themselves in the process, but a degree of self-discipline, enterprise and effort is a basic requirement.
The Bronze and Silver Awards contain four Sections: Service, Skills, Adventurous Journey and Physical Recreation. The Gold Award has an additional requirement - a Residential Project. Please go to the following website for more information www.dukeofed.com.au
Newcastle Grammar School is a licensed operator of the Award and supports students at all Award levels. The major contribution of the School is through the provision of a trekking program. Students will receive training in the skills required, and guidance in the acquisition of gear for successful overnight treks.
As part of the Year 9 Camp students will have the opportunity to complete their Bronze practice and qualifying walks. Teachers will supervise students on these treks. Practice treks will see an adult supervisor walking with a group to ensure that students are safe and to allow skills and knowledge to be passed on during the trek. Qualifying treks will require a group of students to navigate independently, however adult supervisors will ghost-walk behind the trekkers. At night students and adults camp in the same area.

MOCK TRIAL General Information
Mock trial is a schools-based competition run by the NSW Law Society. A trial scenario is set up by the Law Society with schools allocated to be either prosecution or defence. Each team consists of six members: two barristers, a solicitor, two witnesses and a court official. The personnel who fill these positions each trial can vary, so there is room for reserves who may not participate in any round. An external coach, who is a practicing lawyer, helps to prepare the team before each trial. The format of the competition is one practice round, three preliminary rounds and then elimination rounds which start with the top 64 ranked teams after the preliminaries. Trials are traditionally held in local courts during school time, with elimination rounds involving some travel. Preliminary rounds occur approximately every four weeks during Term 1 and 2, Elimination Rounds occur approximately every three weeks during Term 3 and 4, culminating in the Grand Final at the end of Term 4.

TOM is a problem-solving program for teams of students from both primary and secondary years. TOM aims to enhance the potential of our youth by developing diverse skills, enterprise, time management, and the discipline to work collaboratively within a competitive environment. Teams solve challenges from a choice of disciplines:

Tournament of Minds looks beyond academic achievement and understands that the pursuit of excellence knows no boundaries.
Tournament offers students a unique, total experience, providing challenge and growth through its six-week problem solving structure. The Tournament process provides a platform for excellence and equips participants with strategies and skills which will support future success.
Working in teams, effective problem-solving, thinking outside the square and the use of technology are values that employers are searching for in the employee of tomorrow. Tournament of Minds mirrors what successful businesses practice. Teams are created in Term 2 and students begin preparing for the long-term challenge at the beginning of Term 3. Students compete in the Tournament towards the end of August.
