NewmaN stUdies program

Newman offers a wide variety of academic program options with plenty of opportunity to explore. In addition, we provide a strong liberal arts foundation through our innovative and nationally recognized academic core curriculum, the Newman Studies Program (NSP). NSP provides a powerful approach to thinking and problem solving and arms our graduates with the skills employers are looking for.

The Newman Studies Program is designed to build critical skills needed for tomorrow’s workforce while imparting knowledge across a variety of topics.

According to the most recent survey from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), the skills employers value most in recent college graduates are problem solving, written and verbal communication and critical thinking.

The Newman Studies Program is based on four educational principles: active learning, critical thinking, interdisciplinarity and connectivity. Classes reflect a combination of topics

from across disciplines and are taught with two instructors in the classroom – doubling your investment in your college degree. Explore bioethical issues through the lens of the justice system in Bioethics on Trial. Consider the history and culture of America’s pastime in America through Baseball. Or tap into your creative side with Stories and Performance.

By aligning curriculum directly with employers’ wants and needs, the NSP sets our graduates up for success in the job market.

All incoming first-year students and some transfer students will take part in one of several Learning Community options. Learning Communities allow you to quickly build relationships your first semester on campus by putting you in a group of courses with the same students, led by a professor and mentor plus a Newman student facilitator.

Each Learning Community encourages you to make connections by thinking critically with others. Learning Community options are diverse and theme-based. Students can choose which option they prefer. Into Game of Thrones? Check out Reacting to the Past and put your role-playing skills to

Learning Communities are another feature of the Newman academic experience that helps us stand out from the crowd. Learning Communities combine a traditional first-semester experience course with core curriculum requirements, helping you instantly connect your first weeks on campus all while earning credit toward your degree.

life iN wichitaWhat’s it like living in Kansas’ largest city? You might say it’s Wichitawesome. Wichita is a vibrant city, with award-winning cultural attractions, college and professional sports, concerts, dining and more.

There’s more than you think in Wichita. With more than 600,000 residents, the Wichita metropolitan area is larger than three-quarters of city metro areas nationally, and Wichita itself outranks cities like Tampa, St. Louis and New Orleans by population. As a city we’ve been awarded the All-American City Award three times by the National Civic League and have been ranked on Forbes lists for the Happiest Cities to Work In and the Cheapest Cities to Live (best of both worlds, anyone!)

Wichita offers: • 28 art galleries• 33 museums• 17 festivals• 100+ parks• Year-round concerts• Symphony, opera, ballet and

lots and lots of theatre

• The Sedgwick County Zoo, the 7th largest zoo in the U.S.

• The Tallgrass Film Festival, which attracts 11,000 movie-lovers annually

Grab some BBQ in the Delano District. Catch a $5 movie and order dinner and drinks from your seat at the Warren Theater in Old Town. Visit our iconic statue, The Keeper of the Plains, and watch the Ring of Fire light up at night. As a student at Newman, you’ll have access to life outside the classroom both on and off campus.

Plus, with eight shopping districts and more than 1,000 restaurants, we bet you can find a way to keep your parents busy when they come for a visit. Learn more at visitwichita.com.
