AAOMS to Co-sponsor Interdisciplinary ConferenceWith AAOP In Boston In '84:Risk ManagementConference to Follow Joint Meeting

The American Academy of Oral pathologists andthe AAOMS will co-sponsor an interdisciplinaryconference entitled "Diagnosis and Treatment ofProblem Lesions: Concepts and Controversies inDiagnosis and Treatment of Oral Pathoses" inBoston on May IO-ll, 1984. The day-and-a-halfprogram will follow the AAOP's annual meeting. Itwill be held at the Park Plaza Hotel in downtownBoston.

The conference will be presented in three sec­tions: "Odontogenic Tumors and Cysts," Vesicu­lobullous and Dysplastic Diseases of the Oral Mu­cosa," and "Fibro-osseous and Giant Cell Le­sions." Each section will involve a moderator, apathologist, and a surgeon, with commentary to be

. supplied by an oral surgeon and an oral pathologist.Prior to the meeting, on the morning of May 10, theAAOP will conduct a clinocopathologic conference ,to which AAOMS fellows will be invited.

Officials of the AAOMS and the AAOP met ear­lier thi s year to determine the logistics of themeeting. According to Association president-electAnthony L. Checchio, Philadelphia, the joint con­ference "should bring about better mutual under­standing. A gathering of this nature is timely, ofinterest to the membership of both specialty orga­nizations, and could serve to enhance even morethe close relationships that exist between the oralsurgeons and oral pathologists as specialty groupsin dentistry."

On Saturday, May 12, following the joint meeting,the AAOMS will convene a one-day seminar onprofessional liability risk management under the au­thorization of Glenn, Nyhan & Associates, profes­sional liability insurance consultants, and the St.Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Co., underwriters

NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTSof the AAOMS-sponsored professional liability in­surance program.

Attendance at the Boston risk-management sem­inar will entitle fellows to qualify for a 5% premiumcredit on the AAOMS-St. Paul insurance plan.However, all premium credits are first subject tostate regulatory approvals, which are currently beingsought by the St. Paul. A risk-management guide­book and open-book examination will be providedattendees. The examinations will be mailed to theAAOMS for transmittal to and grading by Glenn,Nyhan & Associates; test results will be forwardedto St. Paul, which will determine application of the5% premium credit. Participants who pass will bemailed certificates to attach to their insurance ap­plications or renewal forms.

Additional risk-management seminars are sched­uled to be held in Chicago on Saturday, February18, 1984, prior to the Chicago Mid-winter Meeting.Atlanta will be the site of another such conference,·on October 19, 1984, prior to the ADA's annualmeeting in that city. Three more conferences, stillin the planning stages, are approved for 1984, andwill be held in Philadelphia or Washington, D.C. ,Dallas , and San Francisco. More information on the1984regional risk-management conferences and theschedule for those to be held in 1985 will appear infuture AAOMS publications.

FIRST ROUND OF COMMITTEEAPPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED

During its March meeting, the Board of Trustees ap­proved appointments to six committees of chairmenand members whose terms will commence after theannual meeting in September. Appointments to theremaining Association committees will be com­pleted during the board's June meeting in Chicago.

In other actions, the board reappointed Terry W.Slaughter, Salinas, Calif., to serve a second three­year term as the AAOMS' representative to theADA Commission Appeal Board for the period of1983 to 1986.

GAMBLE TO RECEIVE DISTINGUISHEDSERVICE AWARD

The Board of Trustees has announced that Jack W.Gamble, Shreveport, La., will be the recipient ofthe 1983 AAOMS Distinguished Service Award. Theengraved Steuben Glass plaque is awarded to an in­dividual who has made a major and current contri­bution to the specialty. Dr. Gamble will be pre­sented the award during the Opening Session of the65th Annual Scientific Sessions in Las Vegas, onWednesday, September 21.

Gamble served as AAOMS president from 1980to 1981, during which time he arduously advocatedenactment of major amendments to Medicare and aseat for dentistry on the JCAH. It was also duringGamble's term in office that board certification wasmade a prerequisite for fellowship status and thatthe graduated dues structure was initiated for oraland maxillofacial surgery residents.

Gamble is chief of the section of oral surgery,Louisiana State University Hospital, Shreveport,and maintains a private practice.

WOMEN IN OMS TO MEET DURING ANNUALSCIENTIFIC SESSIONS IN LAS VEGAS

A meeting of female oral and maxillofacial sur­geons, including residents. will be conducted duringthe annual meeting in Las Vegas, on Wednesdayafternoon, September 21, from 3 to 5 PM. The Board of Trustees, during its March meeting,approved a recommendation that the Section onEducation may convene up to two meetings an­nually, during the AAOMS annual meeting and theclinical congress. The section's first meeting will beheld at the 65th Annual Scientific Sessions in LasVegas on Friday, September 23, from 1 to 3 PM,

following the Forum on Residency Education andTraining, which is scheduled from 12 noon to I PM.

The board also approved Donald B. Osbon, sec­tion chairman, and Bejan Iranpour, section secre­tary, to serve as special consultants (nonvoting) tothe Committee on Residency Education andTraining.

The AAOMS Board of Trustees has concurred withthe following nominations by ABOMS of candi­dates for the position of director of the ABOMSboard: Leon F. Davis, Omaha, Neb.; John F. Hel­frick, Birminghan, Mich.; and Douglas P.Sinn, Dallas,Tex. The nominees will be considered by the 1983House of Delegates in Las Vegas.

ABOMS REPORTS 75% PASS ANNUAL EXAMS

Of the 169 people who registered for the 1983 American Board of Oral and MaxillofacialSurgery examination, 126 (75%) passed. One hundred ten (80.3%) who passed took theexamination for the first time.
