113 PROGRAMS (659 RESIDENTS) PARTICIPATE IN19860MSITE
The 1986 Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Intraining Examination (OMSITE) was administeredon May 17 at 98 test centers nationwide. In effortsto improve the validity and ensure the security ofthe examination, the American College Testing Program, Inc. (ACT) was retained by the association toadminister the examination. ACT coordinated thetesting sites and provided proctors for the examination.
Of the 114 accredited oral and maxillofacial surgery training programs, I I3 participated in the 1986examination, for a total of 658 residents. In addition, five Canadian programs (19 residents) and 19AAOMS fellows/members participated. This wasthe first opportunity for practicing fellows andmembers to take the OMSITE, and plans are beingmade to offer the OMSITE to fellows and membersprior to the 1987 Clinical Congress in Chicago, IL.
Taking steps to ensure the validity and security ofthe examination has increased the administrationcosts. To limit the impact of these increased costson the participating residents and to maintain theOMSITE as a self-supporting program, the Boardof Trustees approved an OMSITE committee request for subsidy, the results of which will limit theincrease in cost per resident by only $20.00 in 1987,instead of a projected $40.00 increase. Residentstaking the OMSITE in 1987 will now pay $80.00.
The committee also developed a test blueprint toenhance the consistency and validity of the examination. The blueprint specifically outlines theknowledge and skills to be tested by the examination in each of five subtest areas, strengthens thecontent validity of the examination, facilitates theuse of the results in program evaluation, and improves the test item classification system. Itemwriters used the blueprint as a guide in the preparation of test questions for the 1987 examination. Toincrease the quality of the test questions and maintain participation of the item writers, the number ofitems submitted by each writer was reduced from15 to 10.
