113 PROGRAMS (659 RESIDENTS) PARTICIPATE IN 19860MSITE The 1986 Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery In- training Examination (OMSITE) was administered on May 17 at 98 test centers nationwide. In efforts to improve the validity and ensure the security of the examination, the American College Testing Pro- gram, Inc. (ACT) was retained by the association to administer the examination. ACT coordinated the testing sites and provided proctors for the examina- tion. Of the 114 accredited oral and maxillofacial sur- gery training programs, I I3 participated in the 1986 examination, for a total of 658 residents. In addi- tion, five Canadian programs (19 residents) and 19 AAOMS fellows/members participated. This was the first opportunity for practicing fellows and members to take the OMSITE, and plans are being made to offer the OMSITE to fellows and members prior to the 1987 Clinical Congress in Chicago, IL. Taking steps to ensure the validity and security of the examination has increased the administration costs. To limit the impact of these increased costs on the participating residents and to maintain the OMSITE as a self-supporting program, the Board of Trustees approved an OMSITE committee re- quest for subsidy, the results of which will limit the increase in cost per resident by only $20.00 in 1987, instead of a projected $40.00 increase. Residents taking the OMSITE in 1987 will now pay $80.00. The committee also developed a test blueprint to enhance the consistency and validity of the exami- nation. The blueprint specifically outlines the knowledge and skills to be tested by the examina- tion in each of five subtest areas, strengthens the content validity of the examination, facilitates the use of the results in program evaluation, and im- proves the test item classification system. Item writers used the blueprint as a guide in the prepara- tion of test questions for the 1987 examination. To increase the quality of the test questions and main- tain participation of the item writers, the number of items submitted by each writer was reduced from 15 to 10.
