NEWS AND EVENTS Nominations for Young Scientists Award... Nominations for the Northeast ASAS-ADSA Award for Young Scientists for 1985 should be sent by March 15, 1985, to Dr. Henry Tyrrell, Ruminant Nutrition Laboratory, Animal Sci- ence Institute, Energy Metabolism, BARC-East, Beltsville, MD 20705. Information regarding the qualifications of the nominees and the nomination requirements include: 1. The recipient of the Northeastern Young Scientist Award must be a member of the American Society of Animal Science (NES) or American Dairy Science Association (NEB). 2. The recipient shall be no more than 40 years of age by December 1 of the year awarded. Anyone who has received a national award for a similar contribution within the past 5 years is ineligible. 3. The award consists of an appropriate plaque plus recognition at the annual meeting of the combined animal and dairy societies (Northeast Section). 4. The nominees will be evaluated on their contribution to the animal industry in agricul- tural business, extension, research, or teaching. Nominees with joint appointments or working in more than one activity shall be evaluated on their total contribution. 5. Six copies of a biography of the nominee shall be supplied by the nominator. 6. Six copies of materials outlining the nominee's contribution to the animal industry in agricultural business, extension, research, or teaching shall be supplied by the nominator. 7. Six copies of no more than five (total) letters of support from colleagues or students shall be supplied by the nominator. Call for Papers... • Washington State University seeks a research assistant (M.S. or Ph.D. candidate) in the Department of Animal Sciences. Re- sponsibilities are to pursue and complete requirements for the graduate degree and to 1) conduct research into the regulation of energy and lipid metabolism in dairy or beef cattle (McNamara) and 2) evaluate methods of forage preservation, nutritive value of intercropped silages, and alternative protein sources (Har- rison). Candidate should have B.S. or M.S. in dairy or animal science or closely related field with a strong background or interest in bio- chemistry, physiology, and nutrition. Please contact J. H. • Applications are invited for a tenure- track position as assistant professor/associate professor in meat science and growth and metabolism, Department of Animal and Poultry Science, University of Guelph. The position involves approximately equal time in teaching and research with a small component for extension activity. Teaching includes diploma undergraduate and graduate levels. Knowledge of the relationship of live animals to carcass characteristics and composition is required and a research emphasis in the biochemistry, physi- ology, or genetics of growth is helpful. Major emphasis in the research area is in beef, but work on other food producing species is pos- sible. Applications will be accepted until March 1, 1985. • (Anticipated) Assistant professor, tenure- track position, Southeast Research Station, Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station, Louisiana State University Agricultural Center, FrankIinton. Required are a Ph.D. in ruminant nutrition and the ability to work effectively with other researchers both on and off station. Major responsibilities will be to conduct full- time research at the Southeast Research Station with emphasis on forage protein analyses and factors affecting quality of stored forages. Both independent and cooperative efforts of basic and applied nature with scientists at the South-

east Research Station and in other units of the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station are essential. Available for use are a modern forage quality laboratory fully equipped with latest instrumentation and field experimental facili- ties. Salary is commensurate with training and experience.
