The National Environmental Health As- sociation (NEHA) is pleased to announce that its 52nd Annual Educational Conference will take place from June 25 to 30, 1988 in Cleve- land, OH. The NEHA comprises professionals from the private and public sectors, including academicians. These professionals work in areas of environmental health and protection ranging from hazardous waste, food protection, air, land, and water protection, university and institutional environmental health and pro- tection, supervision and management in en- vironmental health and protection, injury control and occupational health, vector control, noise abatement, housing, toxicology, epi- demiology, and other areas related to en- vironmental health and protection. The conference theme will be "The State of the Art", the technologies and methods used to safeguard the public health from environmental threats. Also, a special exhibit titled The Environmental Professional of the Future will be on display. The NEHA comprises professionals from the private and public sectors, including academicians. Institute (ACDPI) Research Award is February 1, 1988. The award, sponsored by Nordica International, consisting of $1000 and a per- manent plaque, is given annually to a college professor for outstanding research contributions in the cultured products field.

Guidelines for eligibility are: 1) The work (on cottage cheese, buttermilk, sour cream, yogurt, or other fluid and semifluid pro- ducts made by the action of cultures) for which the award is made must have been completed within the past 10 years at a college or university. 2) The recipient must have been a full-time faculty member at the college or university during the time the work was done. 3) The person must not be a previous recipient of the ACDPI Research Award.

The individual selected for the 1988 award will be recognized at the ACDPI Annual Meeting/ Clinic/International Cultured Product Evalua- tion Sessions to be held in Newport Beach, CA, on March 13 to 16. Nomination letters should be sent directly to Dr. C. Bronson Lane, ACDPI, P. O. Box 547813, Orlando, FL 32854-7813.

ACDPI Student Essay Contest... Positions Available...

The winner of the 1988 American Cultured Dairy Products Institute (ACDPI) Student Essay Contest will be recognized at the institute's annual meeting in Newport Beach, CA, March 13 to 16, according to Board Chairman Tedd Wittenbrink, Meadow Gold Dairies. In addition to an all-expenses paid trip to Newport Beach, he/she will be provided with a $500 cash award.

Guidelines for the contest are as follows: 1) The manuscript competition is open to college or university undergraduate students majoring in dairy, food science, or a closely related field. 2) The essay should cover a subject within two broad topics related to cultured dairy products: a. Research needed to solve a current or anti- cipated problem. This may relate to any phase of cultured dairy products research such as product formulation, nutritional considerations, processing technologies, etc. Additionally, one may opt to highlight results of previous research pertinent to the topic or conduct a personal project and report the results; b. Sales/marketing strategies for present or proposed cultured dairy foods. These could include suggestions for

• The Pennsylvania State University is seeking an assistant professor. The position has a 30% teaching and a 70% research re- sponsibility in the area of dairy science. Re- search will be in the area of environment and management. Components of the research program could include physiology, nutrition, and animal behavior. Teaching will involve undergraduate and graduate courses as well as student advising. Additionally, the op- portunity exists for the individual to provide leadership for the dairy cattle judging and evaluation course(s). Qualifications are a Ph.D. in dairy or animal science or closely related area; understanding of and interest in general dairy cattle management; expertise in one of the disciplines in dairy science; demonstrated capability or strong evidence of potential for productivity in teaching and

• The United States Department of Agri- culture fel lows-biotechnology and cell biology

of domestic animals, The Pennsylvania State University, $15,000 annual fellowships. This graduate program leads to a Ph.D. in the Department of Dairy and Animal Science. Students will receive advanced training in the cell biology of domestic animal growth and development to prepare them for employ- ment in academic, government, or industrial research with an agriculture focus. • The United States Department of Agri- culture, Agricultural Research Service, has a 2-year postdoctoral position available to conduct research on enzymatic and chemical modification of bovine casein and relate changes to textural characteristics of formulated foods using casein as a base.
