We did it!! The George Washington Chapter has once again had a great wreaths campaign for 2017! For the first time since we began partnering with Wreaths Across America we broke 2,000 wreaths. We received sponsorships for 1,572 actual wreaths the Alleghenies received 2,423 in our name . Thanks goes out to everyone who participated in any way. Whether you helped stuff envelopes at our chapter picnic, sponsored a wreath(s), contributed articles to your local newspapers or helped place wreaths this past December, we thank you! This year we stuffed over 300 envelopes to past sponsors requesting their participation again in 2017. Form these letters we received almost a 90% response. This year we received over 362 responses. Most new sponsors were due to newspaper articles that were published in Weirton and Wheeling, West Virginia, Steubenville and Martins Ferry, Ohio as well as the Washington Observer-Reporter. These numbers do not include our own chapter members that sponsored wreaths. We received donations from as far away as Iowa, Florida, South Carolina and Illinois. Then on December 16, in brisk cold conditions, Compatriots from our George Washington Chapter as well as from the Ebenezer Zane Chapter (OHSSAR) met at our George Washington Chapter “boulder” in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies for a brief ceremony followed by a wreath laying at our marker.

2017 Participants (L-R) Larry Perkins, Ronald Miller, Gary Timmons, Jeff Turner and Craig Cairns.

All then joined an estimated crowd of 2,500 volunteers who attended this year’s ceremony to place the wreaths. This year 10,355 wreaths were placed and with graves that were already decorated by families, once again this year, every grave was marked. We would like to acknowledge this last list of corporations, individuals and groups that have sponsored wreaths since our last newsletter: 84 Lumber, American Legion Post # 1, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 902, Donna Antone, Aspinwall American Legion Post 77, Judy Babish, Gerilyn Barnes, Phyllis Bayha, Robert & Paula Beatty, Joyce Beighle, John Berg, Bethel Fife & Drum Chapter-DAR, Joanne Blazer, Margaret Brennan, William Briggs, Danette Buchanan, Buffalo Homemakers, Tori Calvert, Joann Campbell, Ruth Conrad, Ebenezer Zane Chapter-SAR, Madeline Chopp, Rosemary Covey, James Coyne, James & Joyce Craft, Louise Curley, Duerr Packaging, David Dunlap, Sue Edgerly, Melissa Egan, Elm Grove Civics, Anita Fabry, Mary Lou Fal, James & Carol Fee, First Christian Church of Weirton, Ft. Presidents Message Happy New Year Compatriots!

As I write this message the temperature outside is in the single digits and below 0 with the wind chill! Brrr! But at the moment my mind is filled with thoughts of our chapter’s activities coming up this New Year, 2018. For those of you who have not been able to attend chapter meetings for the myriad of reasons that keep us all so busy, 2018 provides an opportunity to engage in fellowship with fellow compatriots, support the principals of patriotism and encourage community involvement. All this while experiencing stimulating presentations and good food.

In his last message of 2017, our President General, Larry Guzy, challenged all members with the question, “Do you feel your job is complete just by paying your application fee and annual dues?” Our chapter meetings provide the opportunities for each of us to honor our past as well as provide for our future. I look forward to seeing you at our chapter meeting on February 17th at the Union Grille, Washington.

Quoting from Thomas Jefferson: Do you want to know who you are? Don’t ask. Act! Action will delineate you and define you.

    Your faithful and obedient servant,

    Kurt Winter

Welcome Aboard The George Washington Chapter is honored and delighted to extend the warm hand of friendship to three new members. Father, David and sons Kyle and Eric Christopher. Their Patriot ancestor is John Mossholder who served as a Ranger on the Frontier. He also served in the 1st and 8th Battalion of the Cumberland County, PA. Militia. David is in retail management here in the area while son Kyle is a Manager at a specialty restaurant in Fort Lauderdale, Flordia. Eric will be graduating this year from high school with HVAC certifications. David’s wife Sheila is a DAR member and is active with Hunger-Free Pennsylvania. Again, we welcome the Christopher Family and hope to see them at future meetings.

Contributed by Compatriot Robert K. Grumbling – Assistant George Washington Chapter Chaplin VALLEY FORGE - A PATRIOT'S DEATH: LOVE CONQUERS FEAR Valley Forge, Pennsylvania lies 18 miles northwest of Philadelphia. General George Washington chose Valley Forge as the place the American Continental Army would camp during the winter 1777-1778 after the last major 1777 engagement, the Battle of White Marsh. On December 19, 1777 - 12,000 Patriots entered Valley Forge Camp. Only one fourth of them had shoes. By March 1778, 2500 patriots and 700 horses died from disease, starvation, exposure and other causes. One godly patriot lay dying in February 1778. The brethren comforted him as he asked one of them to pen his last words for his family back home on the farm. Our dear patriot said, "I want my wife and boys to know how a godly man meets the LORD in faith ". The following prose relives this moment in time: O LORD , YAH , I commit my soul to THY will’s action divine. GOD given Faith derived thru YOUR WORD, I am sustained by FATHER’S strength I toil, hurt and fear. The enemy may kill me! LORD CALLS! This cup is mine. HOLY SPIRIT; hold my hand tight. Weak flesh questions my sacrifice’s length. Ago I hunted game, harvested LORD’S gifts, sustained by YAH’S Grace; Working my fields rich soil, blessed crops yield, seeing YAH’S Face. No desire to kill men, worship as called, cherished America’s liberty. Must do what needs done to keep my family free! My fate contribution I do not know! If I fall by musket or disease, Or die whilst I freeze, even starvation may pronounce me dead! The LORD, my ROCK, keeps me in HIS stead; LORD: please doest provide my mansion with YOU .LORD’S Will be done on earth , I humbly accept my due. No fear in me, John 3: 16, My iron faith profess in oblation. If I need fall for victory, I know YESHUA is my salvation !

    Selah! Amen.
