December 2017 $1 Million gift donated by Betty Kabara Brother Larry Schatz, Visitor, announced a $1 million gift from business leader and philanthropist Betty Kabara. The majority of the gift, the largest ever by a living individual to the Midwest District, will endow her gift to the KabarA Challenge, an annual matching gift challenge to support the care of Senior Brothers. In making the gift she noted that the gift was to honor the Brothers who do so much for so many. Her late husband, Dr. Jon Kabara, attended both high school and college sponsored by the Brothers and held them in the highest regard. She said that she hoped everyone would continue to support the Challenge and the Senior Brothers. In recognition of the gift the Provincial office building in Burr Ridge, IL, will be permanently renamed the Dr. Jon and Betty Kabara Center. Brothers in Initial Formation gathered in October The Brothers in Initial Formation Retreat was held at Ocean Rest, NJ, on October 27-29. The three Midwest novices and three Midwest Brothers in temporary vows attended, as well as Brothers in initial formation and formation personnel from other Districts. The novices are Brothers Mark Engelmeyer, Matt Kotek, and Dylan Perry, and those in temporary vows include Brothers Martin Montoya, Johnathan Emanuelson and Ryan Anderson. Brother Alan Parham, Midwest Director of Formation, attended, and Brother Lawrence Goyette (DENA) spoke about the first San Miguel School, which he started in 1993 in Providence, RI, and he briefly detailed the history of the other San Miguel Schools. Chris Swain talked about Vocation Promotion. Each presentation was preceded by prayer, and the weekend was enhanced by the cooking skills of Brother Joseph Juliano (DENA). The retreat provided time for reflection, socializing, and relaxation. One of the most valuable features of this weekend is the opportunity for the men in formation in RELAN to interact with one another and to share insights on the Brother’s life. The next Brothers in Initial Formation Retreat, hosted by the Midwest District, will be at the Fogelman Center in Memphis, TN, in April 2018.

Statue of De La Salle was refurbished

Bishop Kelley H.S. in Tulsa, OK, installed a refurbished, 160 year old statue of De La Salle in mid-October. The almost life size statue is encased and displayed in the library foyer. Connie Sullivan, former B.K. Director of Christian Service, and her husband Tim ‘66 discovered the sculpture in an antique shop in Dallas, TX, in 2004 while they were window shopping. They asked the store owner about the statue, but all he knew was that it came from France and that it was a saint. The asking price was $2,600, but he sold it for about $1,500, because there were not a lot of interested buyers. Further research showed that in the late 1850’s a French sculptor named Olivia was commissioned to create the statue, and then four hundred were ordered and sent to many schools in France and elsewhere. Gary Oberste, current B.K. Dean of Student Activities, traveled to Dallas to purchase and transport the statue. It was unveiled to the B.K. community in January 2005. This past spring B.K. alumni parents, James and Kathy Royal made a generous donation to have it restored, and it was completely renovated by the F.C. Ziegler Company, which is owned by a B.K. family. The statue of

De La Salle, housed in a new lighted display case also given by the donor family, serves as a physical reminder of the Brothers’ commitment to the education of youth in the past, in the present, and in the future. (Excerpted from an article by Doug Thomas, current Director of Advancement, in the B.K. 2016-2017 Annual Report) Midwest District statistics were compiled Mark Freund, Executive Director of the Office of Lasallian Education for RELAN recently requested data collection efforts for the Regional Statistics Project for this year. At the end of 2017 the Midwest District is composed of 27 ministries and 23 communities. In 4 of the ministries a Christian Brother is the Chief Administrator, and in all of the District ministries several thousand lay Partners support the Lasallian mission. Most of the 129 Midwest Brothers live in one of the District communities, and they include 16 serving in PK-12 schools, 23 in universities, 15 in Institute or Regional or District offices, 58 retired, and 17 in other works.
