What a
sensa&onal
start to 2017
for St. Paul
Apostle North.
All classes have se2led with a wonderful
sense of calm. Every classroom teacher has
told me that they love their class, that the
combina&ons of students are working well
and that everyone is happy and ready for a
great year of learning. Our Preps
(Founda&on) have made such a smooth
transi&on to school that it feels like they
have been here for years!! That is a
reflec&on of your work as families,
preparing your children for coming back to
school with a posi&ve aFtude and a sense
of excitement about their learning in the
coming year. Family chats are scheduled for
Monday February 27th
from 2:00pm un&l
8:00pm. The bookings will be open
tomorrow morning. Please take the
opportunity to make a &me for you and
your child to meet with his/her teacher to
talk about their learning journey and set
goals for the semester. A form will be
coming home beforehand for you to fill in
so that you can share any relevant
informa&on with us that we may not have
&me to discuss. If you need to see your
child’s teacher without your child, please
make another &me as the purpose of these
chats is to empower your child to feel a
sense of ownership for his/her learning.
Our staff started the year with two amazing
days of faith development and learning.
Our first day was an explora&on of Laudato
Si, Pope Francis’ second encyclical. This
paper is dedicated to “The Care of our
Common Home” and deals with very
important issues of sustainability and our
responsibility to care for the resources of
the Earth, both animate and inanimate. The
day was run by Sr. Brigid and Sr. Anne from
the Parish team.
Page 2 SPAN News Term 1 Issue 1
Sr. Brigid and Sr. Anne will be running a similar session en&tled
‘Maintaining Integrity of our Environment and Sustainability of
Natural Resources’ at St. Paul Apostle Parish on March 4th
from
9:00am &ll 1:00pm. I would highly recommend it to anyone
who is able to a2end.
On day two we were led by Ingrid Green from the Catholic
Educa&on Office to unpack the new Educa&on Framework for
the Archdiocese of Melbourne called “Horizons of Hope”. This
document, together with the Victorian Curriculum directs our
teaching. They are both available online for anyone who wishes
to access them. ‘Horizons of Hope’ is based on the belief that
all members of a Catholic school community are learners who:
• honour the sacred dignity of each person
• embrace difference and diversity
• search for truth
• build a culture of learning together
• engage with the deep ques&ons of life
• honour equitable access and opportunity for all
• commit to achieving the highest standards possible
• make a difference in the world
With this in mind, we look forward to a wonderful year of
learning together. Please keep communica&on open between
families and the school so that, in partnership, we can achieve
the best outcomes for our children.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
St Paul Apostle Parish SACRAMENTAL PROGRAM 2017
Informa&on regarding the Sacramental Program will be sent home this term. This program is open to all
Catholic students and requires :
• families to a2end Family Nights in the Church
• children and parents to complete a workbook as directed
• regular a2endance at weekly Mass
This sacrament will not be offered in Grade 3 this year. It will be held in 2018 because it
is believed that children and their families will benefit from a closer link being made
between the Sacraments of Reconcilia&on and Eucharist (ie. In the same year).
Catholic children in Grade 4 who have not received the Sacrament of Reconcilia&on need
to contact Mrs Fallace at the school.
In 2018, the Sacrament of Reconcilia&on will be offered to Grade 4 Catholic students in
Term 1 before Eucharist prepara&on commences in Term 2.
Term 2 Grade 4
(Children in Grades 5/6 may join this group if they have not
received the Sacrament of Eucharist and would like to do so).

Salt and Light “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its sal&ness be restored?
It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a
lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the
same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give
glory to your Father who is in heaven.
What does this mean for each one of us in our live?
Page 3 SPAN News Term 1 Issue 1
The Catholic Educa:on theme for 2017 is ‘MOVED
BY THE LOVE OF CHRIST’.
May we all be inspired ‘to be more’ as we share the love of
Christ with everyone we meet. As a school community, St Paul
Apostle North will be exploring what this means through
discussions, prayer and ac&vi&es.
It will underpin
our learning,
fundraising and
outreach. We
hope that you will join us on this exci&ng journey.
St Paul Apostle North & South Schools’ COMMENCEMENT
MASS - 2017
Our first Whole School Mass at the St Paul Apostle Church was a wonderful
way to begin the 2017 school year. All students, including our very ‘grown
up’ Prep children gathered to welcome the
Year of Ma2hew and pray for Jesus to support
us in all that this year has in store for us.
Our class prayer candles were blessed and
presented to class representa&ves by Fr
Xavier. These will be used each day as part of
our prayer focus in our grades.

Help Needed Urgently!!!!! We have been offered 5 laying hens to augment our Kitchen
Garden Program. Unfortunately the &me frame is very short!! We need to house and
enclose them within the next two weeks. Does anyone have an old cubby or something
similar we could use for a hen house? More importantly we need someone to build a
fox proof enclosure for our new girls. Free eggs to anyone who is prepared to help us
out in our urgent need. Please spread the word.

Welcome to OSHC,
Dear Parents and School staff,
Tips for helping children (and parents) feel comfortable in
AGer School Care:
1. Come into the program with your child to meet our Camp
Australia team and find out what kind of ac&vi&es they can
look forward to.
2. Please let the Coordinator know by calling and leaving a
message if the child is registered for A3er School Care and
they will not be a2ending.
3. It is a good idea to enrol your child online 48 hrs prior to
a2ending A3er School Care if your child has any allergies
or medical condi&on. Alternately, you are welcome to
come and speak to the Coordinator a day or two prior for
any medical condi&ons.
4. Feedback and sugges&ons are welcome, so, let us know
how your child felt a3er their first visit.
5. Encourage your child to talk to the Educators if there is
something in par&cular your child would like to do when
they are in our care.
We’re here to make A3er
School Care visits the best
experience possible, for you
and your child.
If you have any ques&ons
about the program please feel
free to drop by, meet the team
and see what happens in A3er

Coping with the Stress of Schooling
The first offering will be by Australia's leading child and
adolescent psychologist and Channel 7 (Sunrise) and 3AW
personality, Dr Michael Carr-Greg.
He will talk on the various (evidence-based) strategies available
for secondary students to cope with the demands and stress of
schooling.
This is important informa&on that all Secondary
Students should have along with Teachers and Parents.
Make no mistake, the rate at which secondary school students
at any year level suffer from, stress, anxiety and depression
resul&ng from the demands of schooling (and society) is
incredibly high.
This presenta&on is therefore ideally suitable for students,
parents and teachers. Details:
Coping with the Stress of Schooling
Date: February 22nd, 2017
Time: 7.00pm to 8.30pm
Venue: The Bentleigh Club, 33 Yawla St, Bentleigh
Cost: $20 (No EFTPOS) Free Car Parking on site
Teachers will be issued with a PD Cer:ficate of A3endance
Here is Dr Michael Carr-Gregg's summary of his presenta:on:
Coping with the Stress of Schooling
For the first &me - exclusive to Cri&cal Agendas - one of
Australia's leading child and adolescent psychologists delivers a
series of prac&cal, evidence based strategies to manage the
stressors of all aspects of school. Recent studies by Mission
Australia shows that coping with stress, study and school are
the top issues of major concern for young people throughout
Australia. This specially designed presenta&on is aimed at
young people and their parents and teachers and aims to give
them evidence-based prac&cal skills, knowledge and strategies
to op&mise their wellbeing, help them with study techniques
and enable them to manage school be2er than ever before. It
includes the latest informa&on on how students can use new
and emerging technology to manage school-related anxiety.
Clear unambiguous advice is also given to parents and teachers
as to how they can help their children manage all aspects of
school! Not to be missed!
Please note, if you're interested in a2ending this presenta&on
please book now as Dr Carr-Gregg's last presenta&on at the
same venue last year in November completely sold out 2
weeks before the scheduled date resul&ng in many people
missing out! We expect a similar outcome again.
TO BOOK:
- Please email rick@cri:calagendas.com.au
- State your name and number of :ckets required at $20 each.
- Collect and pay for your &ckets on the night (Cash Only).
Please note: No EFTPOS, cheques NOT accepted, school
purchase orders NOT accepted.
IMPORTANT: One request we have is that you only reserve
your place (or places) if you are quite certain of your
a2endance on the night. Unfortunately, we have had people
miss out on similar (fully booked) presenta&ons in the past due
to some registrants not a2ending and therefore denying others
the opportunity to do so. We do understand and accept that
unforeseeable circumstances to prevent one's a2endance may
arise. We only ask that once you book your required number of
places that a concerted a2empt is made to a2end on the night
even if it's raining, windy or cold on the night!
Protec:ng Children Helpful hints for parents, families and friends. How to keep
children safe.
Posi:ve Discipline
Learning is an important part of growing up. Children learn
from what they see around them and from what they see
others do. That is why it is important for parents to act in
ways we want our children to act. Disciplining children is a
normal part of paren&ng. As many of us have been smacked
during our childhood, we may think that a ‘good smack’ will
not do any harm. Discipline works be2er when it helps the
child choose what is right, rather than forcing the child to
act in a certain way. In fact, the first meaning of the word
‘discipline’ is about learning and training, rather than
punishing.
Simple, posi:ve discipline works well:
• Talk and listen to children.
• Remember, they are children.
• We should keep things simple and not expect too much.
• Set clear rules and s&ck to them.
• Praise and reward good behaviour with hugs and smiles.
• Talk about unacceptable behaviour rather than tell the
child that she or he is bad.
• Tell children what you want them to do, not just what
they are doing wrong.
• Let children help in some decisions
