Communication Focus
Thought/Meme of the Week
Behaviors are ways that our pupil’s at Greenmead communicate - they are not always being
“naughty”. Sometimes a behavior that we think is ‘bad’ can be the child saying they don’t like
something, feel pain, or asking for your attention (and by telling them off, they have succeed in
getting your attention, so will do it again!), Instead of reprimanding them, show them how to
communicate in a ‘good’ way – try showing them a symbol or sign, so they learn what to do next time.
Try a new strategy
Keep some core vocabulary symbols in easy
reach (e.g. a keyring attached to your belt loop,
or on door handles around the house), then you
model what words to use as opportunities arise.
Thoughts with OT
At school we are trying really hard to think about
positioning and posture to make sure pupils are
able to access their environments, join in with
activities and communicate.
