The current Big Raffle item - a DeWalt 20 volt 3 piece combo kit - will be held for one more month. With all the excitement of the club tool auction in June we decided to have the drawing for the drill driver, impact driver and jobsite radio at the July 3 meeting. You will still have a chance to buy tickets ($5 each or 3 for $10) at the June and July meeting. Because of the club tool auction on June 5 we ask that you hold any silent auction items until July.
At the June meeting you will also get a preview of the next Big Raffle item - a Rockwell RK9002 Jawhorse!

SCROLL SAW TECHNIQUES Dave Dockstader presented the May program giving us some good tips on scroll sawing and some great examples of what you can do with your scroll saw. If he got your interest with
his talk, stop by the Scroll Saw SIG before the meeting. Nice job Dave—thanks.
June is the month for book, magazine, and project plan sales. First we have Woodsmith and Shop-
notes in abundance. Where possible, we have separated those magazines into complete calendar
years. Each of those groups of 6 issues will be available for $1. These would cost you $5 or more on
eBay. So if you have missing years in your collection, here is the ideal way to complete them. We also
have a limited number of Woodsmith and Shopnotes padded binders with 2 calendar year’s issues in
them that will be sold for $4. This is probably your last chance to pick up these binders. There will be a
plethora of single issues of Fine Woodworking, Woodsmith and Shopnotes on sale for just $.05. So
bring your nickels and dimes. You won’t find a better deal.

Finally, some of the club’s benefactors have left us a conglomeration of project plans. These were all commercial plans that may no longer be available. They range the gamut from Christmas decorations, toys, furniture, knick-knacks, etc. Some of them are in sets of 5 to 10 plans and some are singles. They all seem to be in excellent shape. It appears as though these folks purchased the plans, looked at them once, and then filed them away never to be used. If you would like to pick up some plans for pennies on the dollar, here is your chance. The plans will range in price from $.05 to $1.50. So pull out the couch cushions and dig around under chairs for some coins to score big savings. See you at the sale table back by the library.

Future Events We are need of members who will open their shops to share their workspace. One of the rea-sons for having shop tours is for members to advance their woodworking skills by learning from fellow hobbyists. Please reach out to the shop tour coordinator at a meeting or email at [email protected] to host a tour. You can also contact any of the board members to offer your shop in a monthly tour. Recap of May 2018 Tour of Arnie Bandstra’s Shop One of the first things we learned was that Arnie’s interest is not limited to woodworking; he is an active member of the Ottawa Canal Association (i.e. Illinois & Michigan Canal) as well as a dedi-cated canoeist.
As for woodworking it was surprising how many tools and equipment Arnie fit into a relatively small footprint shop with while not giving in to complete chaos. Given that his woodworking days began in his youth he has collected and inherited many tools through the years and seeing his output at the meetings I expected a shop with a much larger layout – clearly Arnie makes effi-cient use of space.
I expect all of us in FVWWC enjoy what we do as woodworkers. While there may be a few of those “Measure Once Cuss Twice” moments, our craft is rewarding for many good reasons. Some of us took up woodworking out of pure necessity - we had home maintenance projects and limited budget to hire it done. Later we came to enjoy the woodworking. Even if you can afford professional help, the satisfaction of completing a woodworking project may be a welcome respite from jobs where there is little sense of accomplishment - sometimes nothing ever seems to get done. And, most woodworking problems can be solved with a little thought and effort, while many of life’s other problems can not. Building something in your wood shop can be a great place to escape the stresses of daily life. Receiving compliments on your woodworking projects from your family and friends is good for your ego and encourages you to pursue it further. Better yet, positive com-ments from your fellow woodworkers is even more rewarding because they know the skill and cre-ativity that was involved.
For me, there is no better reward than the genuine joy and pleasure of family members getting a piece of furniture or other gift I have made. Here are some examples of what I mean.
Hugs and kisses from happy grandkids are a big reason why I do it. I have six grandkids now and hopefully a couple will take an interest in woodworking - that indeed would be the best reward.
2018 Membership Dues Dues for 2018 can be paid at the general meetings - just see Ed Schalk at his table before the meeting or during break. Dues are still $30 per individual which includes the whole family. Please note that family members must reside at the same address. Our by-laws require payment of dues by Febru-ary 15. Members unpaid after that time are re-moved from membership rolls and mailing lists.

We have an updated PDF file of Steve Good’s patterns if you want to bring a thumb drive. We’ll also discuss new tools for creating scroll saw portraits.
