Da Big Raffle!
The current Big Raffle item - a DeWalt 20 volt 3 piece combo kit - will be held for one more month. With all the excitement of the club tool auction in June we decided to have the drawing for the drill driver, impact driver and jobsite radio at the July 3 meeting. You will still have a chance to buy tickets ($5 each or 3 for $10) at the June and July meeting. Because of the club tool auction on June 5 we ask that you hold any silent auction items until July.
At the June meeting you will also get a preview of the next Big Raffle item - a Rockwell RK9002 Jawhorse!

FVWWC June Tool Auction
We are planning our annual woodworking auction for the June 5
meeting. Bring equipment, tools, veneer, anything woodworking
related that you think other members might want to buy. These
are items you want to clear out of your shop and are willing to
donate to the club for whatever price it can bring. Our president,
Tom Sharp will be conducting the auction in his usual humorous
manner, so we are sure to have a fun time. This is a good oppor-
tunity to get rid of the stuff sitting around your shop unused and
unloved. Bring some cash or your checkbook so you don’t miss
out on any bargains you might want to buy. Just remember to
take any of your items that do not sell back home – the club has
no means to store it.
If you have something to sell at any time, be sure to check the
classified section of our fvwwc.org website for items our mem-
bers have for sale. Follow the instructions on the website for
submitting your classified ad.
To make sure we have enough time for the auction, hang on to your show and tell items until the
July meeting . As an additional incentive for attending, we plan to have hot dogs, chips and
drinks prior to the meeting—no purchase necessary .

SCROLL SAW TECHNIQUES Dave Dockstader presented the May program giving us some good tips on scroll sawing and some great examples of what you can do with your scroll saw. If he got your interest with
his talk, stop by the Scroll Saw SIG before the meeting. Nice job Dave—thanks.

June is the month for book, magazine, and project plan sales. First we have Woodsmith and Shop-
notes in abundance. Where possible, we have separated those magazines into complete calendar
years. Each of those groups of 6 issues will be available for $1. These would cost you $5 or more on
eBay. So if you have missing years in your collection, here is the ideal way to complete them. We also
have a limited number of Woodsmith and Shopnotes padded binders with 2 calendar year’s issues in
them that will be sold for $4. This is probably your last chance to pick up these binders. There will be a
plethora of single issues of Fine Woodworking, Woodsmith and Shopnotes on sale for just $.05. So
bring your nickels and dimes. You won’t find a better deal.
Here is a list of the hardcover books we will be selling for $2:
Router Joinery Rogowski, Gary 978 1-5615-8174-0 Mastering Hand Tool Techniques Bridgewater, Alan & Bridgewater, Gill 978 1-5587-0457-2 Guide to Shaping Wood Bird, Lonnie 978 1-5615-8400-0 The Workshop Book Landis, Scott 978 0-9423-9137-4 Good Clean Fun Offerman, Nick 978 1-1019-8465-9 Woodworking with The Router Hylton, Bill & Matlack, Fred 978 0-7621-0227-3
Here are the paperback books selling for $1:
How to Design and Build Your Ideal Woodshop Stankus, Bill 978 1-5587-0481-7 Creating Your Own Woodshop Self, Charles R. 978 1-5587-0326-1 Tremendous Toy Trucks Neufeld, Les 978 1-5615-8399-7 Woodturning for Cabinetmakers Dunbar, Michael 978 0-8069-6700-4 Mastering Woodworking Machines Duginske, Mark 978 0-9423-9198-5 Classic Finishing Techniques Allen, Sam 978 0-8069-0512-9 Making and Mastering Wood Planes Finck, David 978 0-8069-6163-7 The Accurate Router Kirby, Ian 978 0-9643-9997-6
Finally, some of the club’s benefactors have left us a conglomeration of project plans. These were all commercial plans that may no longer be available. They range the gamut from Christmas decorations, toys, furniture, knick-knacks, etc. Some of them are in sets of 5 to 10 plans and some are singles. They all seem to be in excellent shape. It appears as though these folks purchased the plans, looked at them once, and then filed them away never to be used. If you would like to pick up some plans for pennies on the dollar, here is your chance. The plans will range in price from $.05 to $1.50. So pull out the couch cushions and dig around under chairs for some coins to score big savings. See you at the sale table back by the library.

Future Events We are need of members who will open their shops to share their workspace. One of the rea-sons for having shop tours is for members to advance their woodworking skills by learning from fellow hobbyists. Please reach out to the shop tour coordinator at a meeting or email at [email protected] to host a tour. You can also contact any of the board members to offer your shop in a monthly tour. Recap of May 2018 Tour of Arnie Bandstra’s Shop One of the first things we learned was that Arnie’s interest is not limited to woodworking; he is an active member of the Ottawa Canal Association (i.e. Illinois & Michigan Canal) as well as a dedi-cated canoeist.
As for woodworking it was surprising how many tools and equipment Arnie fit into a relatively small footprint shop with while not giving in to complete chaos. Given that his woodworking days began in his youth he has collected and inherited many tools through the years and seeing his output at the meetings I expected a shop with a much larger layout – clearly Arnie makes effi-cient use of space.

President’s Sawdust
Tom Sharp, President FVWWC The editorial musings of your president which maybe serious, funny, technical, or philosophical, but hopefully
always entertaining.
Opportunities for my Wife
My wife is going to retire at the end of July. I can’t wait. I look forward to all kinds of benefits from this
change. Whilst I go through the routine rigors of the office, I delight in the idea of soon having sumptu-
ous meals ready for me at the end of the day. The house will soon be spic and span. Maybe, mowing the
lawn will be a chore done by the missus in the middle of the day instead of by me in the evening and
weekends.
And then there’s the workshop. There are so many opportunities in my man-cave for her to spend some
useful and beneficial time. First, the windows need a good cleaning inside and out. And the floors, while
in general are in good order, could do with a really good mopping and polishing in order to say yes, you
could eat off them.
Sawdust has a habit of getting into the many drawers and making the insides look dirty. I have a horse-
tail brush vacuum nozzle that does an outstanding job of removing the dust without disturbing whatever
tools are lying within. Using this nozzle brings back that velvety look on the drawer liners. Of course,
some of these will need a bit of straightening to remove the wrinkles. The best way to accomplish this is
to remove the articles in the drawer, clean the liner, and then turn it over with the curled ends down al-
lowing it to relax and straighten out on its own. This takes a lot more time but is well worth it in the end.
I’m sure my other half will agree.
Another worthwhile endeavor for the retired one will be to polish my brass. I have a number of hand
planes that need a good going over with Brasso. It turns the hands black but that’s OK. I say these are
not smudges but badges of honor worn by those that are proud to do a little sumpin for the hubby.
Lastly, there is the time consuming activity of sharpening. As a person whose career has been in training
others, I am sure that with a little time I can teach my wife the appropriate techniques. I’ll start her out
with a Work Sharp. After she understands the fundamentals, the Tormek will be next. Eventually, she
can hone her skills with a Veritas jig and a good set of Japanese stones. These of course take more time
but she has lots of that now.
If your wife is retired, I invite you to share these ideas with your partner as well. Here’s hoping that giv-
ing these opportunities to her will be as satisfying as I’m sure they will be for my wife when I tell her. Let
me know how that goes for you.

Why Woodworkers Do It
I expect all of us in FVWWC enjoy what we do as woodworkers. While there may be a few of those “Measure Once Cuss Twice” moments, our craft is rewarding for many good reasons. Some of us took up woodworking out of pure necessity - we had home maintenance projects and limited budget to hire it done. Later we came to enjoy the woodworking. Even if you can afford professional help, the satisfaction of completing a woodworking project may be a welcome respite from jobs where there is little sense of accomplishment - sometimes nothing ever seems to get done. And, most woodworking problems can be solved with a little thought and effort, while many of life’s other problems can not. Building something in your wood shop can be a great place to escape the stresses of daily life. Receiving compliments on your woodworking projects from your family and friends is good for your ego and encourages you to pursue it further. Better yet, positive com-ments from your fellow woodworkers is even more rewarding because they know the skill and cre-ativity that was involved.
For me, there is no better reward than the genuine joy and pleasure of family members getting a piece of furniture or other gift I have made. Here are some examples of what I mean.
Hugs and kisses from happy grandkids are a big reason why I do it. I have six grandkids now and hopefully a couple will take an interest in woodworking - that indeed would be the best reward.
