Week 9 Term 2

25th June 2018

Dear Parents and Caregivers Another wet start to the week and this seems to be have been the common theme this term weather wise. Perhaps we will get all the poor weather over prior to the holidays so you can at least have your children outside playing. Many thanks for your support last week during our shorter day it was much appreciated by us all. I am unsure what the next steps for teachers in their negotiations but we will keep you informed to give you plenty of time should arrangements need to be made. The concerns around Mycopplasma Bovis (M. Bovis) are no doubt at the front of your mind at this time particularly if you are a dairy farmer or part of the industry. It has particular relevance in our context as we have AG. Day pencilled in for the start of term four. All schools in Te Puke are currently taking advice around this and a meeting will take place this week to look at what should occur in regard to this special day on our calendar given the M Bovis situation. Naturally, we will work with the relevant parties and do whatever is necessary to support farmers and ensure we are helping to stop the spread. Again, we will keep you in the loop and advise you of more detail once we know. We have locked in all our staffing changes for next term. As I mentioned last week Hayley Paterson will return to us full time in the Jiddles. Jane McNeil will return to the Senior Block as Jazmin Reid will be taking maternity leave as from the end of this term. Lastly, we will begin another new entrant class in the juniors and Kim Jensen and Gail Wood-Keating will lead this as they have done in previous years. We are experiencing steady roll growth as more families move into our area or look to make Pongakawa the second home for their children which is fantastic. This is also useful as we are looking likely to reach the Education Ministries end of year roll expectation for us by the beginning of next term. Once this occurs we can then apply for extra staffing and it will also help what we are allocated in 2019. The PTA have now collated all the expenses and other costs from Quiz Night and have announced the profit for this year $27,000.00. This is an outstanding result and will certainly help provide some great outcomes in the areas selected to be supported. Once again a huge thank you to all the team for their marvellous effort, it makes a real difference in our school. Have a fantastic week. Yours in teaching Craig Haggo Principal

Worming children and adults Worms in the body block our digestive track, rob us of nutrients and stop the digestive system from functioning. Tapeworm is not the only worm that affects our digestive system, there are several types of worms that can cause problems, including whip worms, thread worms, hook worms and round-worms. Some symptoms may include: An itchy bottom, general irritability and behavioural changes, trouble sleeping, or restless sleep, sometimes resulting in bed-wetting or a sudden lack of appetite. How infections can occur: Walking barefoot in the garden, playground or any infected soil; for example, hookworm larvae burrow through the skin of bare feet. Ingesting worm eggs through eating fruits, vegetables, grains, fish and meat contaminated with roundworm or whip worm. Washing fruits and vegetables with contaminated water. Transfer of the parasitic worms from pets to owner. Coming in contact with the soil that has been contaminated with human faeces from an infected person. Not washing hands with soap and water after defecating. Contact your local pharmacy to discuss worming treatments.

This week’s Enviro Tip: Bread bags, chip packets and bubble wrap can be recycled

along with many more wrappings too! There is a 'soft plastic' recycling barrel at Countdown

stores. Google soft plastic recycling to find other outlets to keep plastic from our landfills and ocean.
