President and CASA Liaison Tim Nolan General Apologies to attendees of the August Meeting but I have had to have some maintenance done and will be in hospital just ahead of the Meeting and won’t be up to travelling - but I will be back flying for October. Welcome to the new membership year! It looks like another solid one for ANSW. I would like to ask all pilots to show some patience while we process all the MAAA cards. Please be aware that if you have a receipt then you are fully covered as an MAAA Member. Dave Lewis does an amazing job processing all the memberships every year. The process is complex. It starts with your Club entering its information. Dave then checks all the details and associated payments. It is then forwarded to MAAA who print the cards and send a bulk mail of all the NSW cards back to Dave who collates them into Clubs and sends them out to your Club Secretary for distribution, either in person at your club or by mail. Dave, as with the other members on the leadership team all have families and full-time jobs. We are volunteers trying to help ANSW. The Coffs Harbour Meeting is part of our continuing effort to take ourselves out to the Clubs around the State. This gives members in that part of NSW a chance to see and hear us for themselves, to ask questions, make suggestions and to help us understand the issues that are facing different Clubs and their areas. For us it is a great opportunity to visit the country Clubs and do some flying, meet the members and experience the areas that we want to promote to other members. I recently did an interview on ABC radio and since then have been asked to speak at other forums and events on model flight, trends and developments in our sport. In promoting your Club have you considered reaching out to other groups for joint activities? Perhaps your local photographic club for example as they are often looking for challenging subjects to photograph. CASA On the CASA front, is your Club one that operates above 400’AGL or within 3NM of an Aerodrome? This refers to MAAA MOP004 and MOP061. Do you hold glider events or IMAC or any other event that goes above 400’AGL? If so, then this next point is important for you. If you have an Area Approval then you must operate to the conditions on that Area Approval. If there is NO area Approval and you are operating under the current Exemption from CASA Directive 96/17, having completed a Risk Assessment in accordance with MOP004, then this Exemption from the Regulations will expire in late October 2018. It is very important that if you want to continue to operate above 400’AGL you need to talk to me about an Area Approval with a Height Exemption. There is no charge from CASA while the current exemption is in force. To those clubs who are having difficulty with the drought our thoughts are with you and we all wish you well with spring looming. We hope that you keep flying safely and that your aircraft brings a smile to your face.

Secretary Clive Weatherhead It has become evident that aeromodelling is not recognised as a “grass roots sport” and our Clubs are not on the list of recognised State sporting organisations held by Sport and Recreation NSW. This is affecting Clubs that are applying under the current defibrillator grant scheme. At a Federal level, MAAA is recognised as an unfunded sport by the Australian Sports Commission, but this does not provide automatic take-up at a State level. Aeromodellers NSW is making representation to have this corrected in NSW. It is unlikely that this will be a quick or simple process, but we do expect to be successful in due course. It will not, though, help with applications under the current grant scheme. Vice President Greg Hoy Looking for a suitable site for an MAAA sponsored State Flying Field continues. At this stage, searches are extending to as far north as Cessnock and Singleton due to availability and land prices. This area extends the distance criteria from 2 hours to 2.5 hours from Sydney. A number of fields within the Sydney basin remain under threat of closure due to urban sprawl. Understanding the requirement for risk assessment and how to complete these continues to strengthen with a number of Clubs having completed their required risk assessments. Public Relations Officer Aranka Nolan There is always much to do and so little time to do it in. Regardless we press on and achieve what we can. Behind the scenes work continues in the following areas: The website is being redesigned for a better visitor experience. Our aim is to make information more easily accessible for people including:

those who are new to the sport and looking at how to get started eg nearest clubs and specialties such as gliders;

those familiar but looking to engage with activities at different clubs and events around the state;

those who want to book the State Field; and

those looking for more training.

We are also looking to improve the site cosmetically, so are resizing some banners, changing the content and refreshing the images. We have worked on putting in a shopping cart to enable the purchase of different items and ensuring that the shopping page is secure. With the development of our Risk Training Package and our Flight training we are considering the feasibility of creating an online environment that help beginners and intermediates help their learning through an online system. The Aeromodellers Radio Show is a podcast for aeromodellers around the state and will be available from our website as well as live but more on that closer to the launch. We will be sending out a dedicated email about it and we are creating a new page and link on the Aeromodellers website. We are looking to launch a competition for Aeromodeller of the Year. The team are working through the details, but the trophy is spectacular and well worth winning. More on that shortly also. Other General / New Business Vice President opened the meeting and extended appreciation to the Coffs Harbour and clubs in the northern region for hosting the business meeting and providing such a wonderful venue and luncheon. It was good to see many clubs/members from around the area and enjoy a day’s flying together. The Vice President provided some background to his modelling experience as well as his day-to-day job role and asked each of the ANSW representatives to do the same accordingly. Plenty of discussion regarding the instructors’ program and the differences between a “recertification course” and a “refresher course”. Clubs in the Northern region articulated via the CFI-North that if a test was going to be involved, that instructors would relinquish their training status. The question arose about whether competency could be achieved if it was a series of verbal questions out on the flight line. This was also dismissed. However, it was indicated that testing was suitable for any new instructors. Concern was raised by the floor regarding the lack of consultation from the MAAA with all instructors across the country and it would be more beneficial if a conference call could be arranged with everyone rather than a holding workshops in a single location. It was felt this would be better use of funds rather than flying a select few to one location. The CFI North enquired about 2 members who had completed instructors course many years about and despite fulfilling requirements were still waiting for paperwork to be completed. The members were Anthony Ogle (4 years ago) and Rowan Howarth (18 months ago). Rowan had completed the course twice. Action: Vice President and CFI to follow up. Secretary’s note following meeting: this has now been followed up and records will be corrected, and cards reprinted. There was extensive discussion on growing and sustaining clubs and club membership as well and being recognised within the community as a sport/recreational group. It was noted that there is a need for all members to contribute to the running and upkeep of the club and not just the usual select few. It was suggested the importance of availing the opportunity to speak or offer to speak at Rotary and Lion club evenings and councils on what aeromodelling clubs do and the benefits to the community. This strengthens the communities understanding of aeromodelling and the clubs are then in a better position if ever there is a need to seek club support for any reason. The benefits of a recent interview by the President with ABC Radio saw a significant spike in website hits of around 250. This shows that by simple public awareness and generate interest and potentially new members. The Vice President raised a proposed award program of State Aeromodeller of the year. The VP ask people to consider anyone they would believe worthy of such an award. Details of the award and how to nominate would be published in due course. 4. Club News & General Interest "EXTRA TIME" - IC to E-Power Conversion

After checking my log book, I note it is 10 years since my first flight with this "Extra 300" quarter scale model, originally fitted with a "DA 50cc" motor, Pitt style exhaust and Emcotec electronics.

Ready to pull out – the 10 year old internal combustion set up

At ~8.6 kilo AUW it was a pretty lively model, capable of some basic 3/D aerobatics running a Wess 23A/8 prop. Over the years I had great enjoyment and also a few lows, with three engine stoppages recorded, two due to not using the header tank and one where the engine quit while running a little too hot on very warm summers day; unfortunately that time resulting in some airframe damage, which fortunately was easily fixed and model was returned to action running slightly richer. With the advancing times and the improvements in electrics I'm getting involved with, mainly EDF powered jets, I have accumulated a nice collection of high voltage and capacity LiPo batteries and recently had a thought “why not "elektrofly" this model”. An almost identical model, but at only two metres with a much smaller EF50/20, electric motor running on 10S, has proved to be most reliable after hundreds of flying sessions to date. So after little research I have discovered there is a huge range of electric motors available to power this larger size of model and decided to go for it.

Bargain give away

Selling my IC set up didn't take that long, basically giving it away at peanuts but at enough to purchase the new "Eflite 360", 6 Kilowatt electric motor, following great experience with this brand in smaller 10, 32 and 46 sizes, powering a variety of my own design fun-fly models. With the wide range of high voltage electronic speed controllers available as part of my EDF fleet I decided to use a modified "Sun Rise 180" amp unit.

Recommended max. peak of 150 amps for this motor at 12/S, seemed the right combo but unfortunately this ESC only comes wrapped up in heat shrink which is a "no-no" as far as I'm concerned for an HV power unit. So minor modifications were made by adding extra cooling

heat sinks to the FETs on each side have proven to assist in reliably running over many years in some of my high current draw electric jets.

Extra set of capacitor fitted to slightly longer battery power leads

The ESC was positioned just at the entrance of fuselage air tunnel to minimize the length of the power leads. I also added an extra set of capacitors

First test run

to the slightly longer than recommended battery leads which is a norm in all my high power electric setups. Large 6.5 mm gold bullet connectors were

used to hook it all up. There was a nice surprise after receiving the motor with it fitting perfectly to my DA 50 stand offs inside the cowl of the engine box compartment. After a simple power unit installation with a couple of degrees down thrust I experimented with various capacity batteries to find the best placement position for correct centre of gravity. Minor changes were made with the use of balsa sheeting to create new vanes to direct air flow over the motor and the speed controller for cooling. I purposely omitted the prop spinner in this model in order to maximize the air intake and flow over my battery compartment inside the fuselage and also to minimize the load on ball bearings and at the same time, eliminating any possibility of vibration from that source. A small 5 ch Power Box system replaced my original Emcotec electronic set up with a 5000mA, 6 volt battery supply providing power to all high torque operating servos. With the mid-range battery capacity at 5200mA, (1750Grams) the AUW of the model came up some 750 grams more than the full internal combustion wet set up which I have expected for this electric conversion.

New more efficient prop fitted after fine tune balance

After my first static run with the use of a light electric prop I replaced it with a more efficient one but still less loaded than that recommended to start with. A quick static pull check came out at just around one to one power to weight, (~9.5kg) rather impressive for an e-powered model of this size on a lightly loaded prop. Since I originally built this model it has been operating on 36 MHz

usingchange to 2.4Ghz was necessary in order to eliminate any possibility of interference. So, a new Spektrum 8ch. receiver with Satellite antenna was hooked up to my Power Box and the whole system re-bound.

RPM & static pull check

A few more static check runs to simulate the flight time was performed to see how it loads the motor, ESC and the two 5.2Ah batteries hooked up in series as 12S/5200/60C. There was no excessive heat recorded, with all units running rather cool.

A thorough range check was performed next, with the model running at various throttle settings at some 300+ meters distance showing a positive result. This conversion was lot simpler than I had actually expected and I'm most delighted in creating a new model that I can now enjoy flying at sites where I did not dare to do so with the very noisy internal combustion power unit.

ASAC & LSF Flying Objectives Weekend In association with the Soaring Emus Invite all glider guiders to an LSF Flying objectives

weekend at the Adrian Bryant Field West Wyalong

Date 23 - 26 November 2018

MAAA membership is a field & LSF requirement.

Recommend 2.4 systems only

If you are already a member of the LSF or would like to learn more about its objectives, please feel free to come

and join us for a weekend of glider flying. Start level 1 or work on tasks for your next level. Electric launch, yes you

can now do LSF task with electric gliders, or winch launched are welcome. Any glider style can be used, ie Vintage,

Woodies and moulded all welcome. Fly for fun or join the LSF ESAP & SAP self-paced achievement programme.

All flights will be conducted in accordance with the LSF rules, ie a 30sec motor run and 200 metre maximum launch

height for electrics and winch lines of up to 300 meters for standard gliders.

Contests will be run over the weekend using a very simple format. Contest flying between 10am and 4PM. No

rounds just fly when you get the urge. Any three flights to count for the contest. Fly in both thermal and electric.

General flying at any time. Have a go at a 1K or 2K Goal and Return. The field is of a size that this is possible within

the perimeter.

Field fee $30 for the event. Camping available $10 per night. BBQ, electricity, hot showers and civilised toilets.

BYO food & beverages. There is a well-stocked IGA and hardware in one shop down town.
