AUGUST 2020

Well we are half way through Term 3 and there has been so much to celebrate as we return to a sense of normality here at school. It was fantastic

last week to be together enjoying the athletics carnival and a great opportunity to have some good old fun. I thank the staff who put in so

much work to make this day full of some happy memories especially for our Year 12 students as it will be their very last one.

The year will quickly pass for the soon to be graduating students of 2020. In lots of ways they have been the trail blazers of everything new for Education

Queensland. The first to start prep, the first to start Year 7 at high school and the first to be undertaking the new senior curriculum including external

examinations. I know one thing for sure especially with the COVID virus they are one very resilient bunch and I congratulate them on that.

By now you would be aware that due to the restrictions imposed on how we

could run the school formal at function centre at Kawana, we have made the decision to hold it at school. Many schools are making this decision due to

the risk that the function centre could at any stage be completely shut down depending on the spread of the virus in Queensland.

As a school we did not wish to risk not having a formal at all. We have more flexibility with what we can do having it on the school site. Please be assured

that we are putting in a great effort to ensure that it is a memorable night and the students have a fun night. We have also cut the price slightly.

Although I know some disappointment is around not having photos by the lake I would suggest that you could take some photos before arrival at the formal at some other lovely venues.

The last few weeks we have started the process involved with interviewing Year 7 out of catchment enrolments for general enrolments and also the

Horizons Excellence Program. We have certainly been inundated with requests to attend Burnside SHS. These interviews will continue throughout

the term and families will be advised of the outcome in Term 4.

An exciting delivery was recently made to Burnside as we are only one of

four schools building part of a RV 12 Van. We will be assembling the wing of the plane. The skills the students learn will translate into engineering,

military and metalwork career paths. We are very lucky to have the support of the Sunshine Coast Aero Club, Sports Aircraft Association of Australia and

the Sports Aircraft of Australia Chapter 22

Caboolture. We also have a keen admirer watching our work. Sebastian Heintz who

owns the Zenith Aircraft Company in America and is watching our Facebook

posts on this subject.

Last week on assembly I announced the

arrival of our Share the Dignity vending machine which has been donated to the

school. The machine has been installed in the female Amenities toilets and provides free period packs which includes two

pads and six tampons for students.

The machine and stocking with product

costs $10,000.00 and we are the first school on the coast, both private and

public, to be supplied with the machine. I thank the sponsors for this donation and

hope that the students are respectful when using the machine. We will monitor

the use of the machine and also wish to monitor that students would not purposely waste the donated packs.

Term 3 will soon be over as we continue our transition programs with our feeder

primary schools and with students who will be attending our Diverse Learning

Hub in 2021. I also remind any families who are in catchment to get your

enrolment forms in as soon as possible as this impacts on how many out of

catchments I can consider.

Our annual Athletics Carnival tradition of the “Best Dressed Competition”

had a great turn-out this year, with very enthusiastic participants. We congratulate Will (with his fetching earrings in place and firmly noted!),

Sophie Labinsky, Samara Boardman and Kieren on taking out the top 4, and also thank the many other students who participated in this fun event. It

was great to see so many students proudly wearing their house colours.

On Thursday 20 August, students from Years 10 and 11 who are interested

in seeking leadership positions for 2021 will be participating in a development day with Y-Lead, an organisation with which Burnside SHS has

a long association. At the conclusion of the day, students will be taking nomination forms home to complete in order to begin the 2021 leadership process this term. We very much look forward to working with these

students.

AIR BORNE CHEMICALS - AEROSOL BAN: Some members of the Burnside State High School community suffer severe allergies to aerosol sprays or perfumes that can act as a trigger to an (often) serious asthma attack, or bring on a severe migraine. The allergy can be sufficiently serious to put one of our students into anaphylactic shock if an aerosol or perfume has been sprayed anywhere in the student's vicinity. This can be a life threatening situation, resulting in the student’s airways closing and the student having to be transported to hospital in an ambulance. • Aerosols are banned from school premises, excursions, sporting events and all events where students are in confined spaces. To provide the safest environment, students are banned from bringing aerosol sprays and perfume pump-packs to Burnside State High School. This includes for any excursions, camps or other onsite or offsite activities. Risk management strategies will be in place for any aerosol sprays used as part of the curriculum and school business. Aerosol sprays or perfume pump-packs brought to school by students will be confiscated and disposed of. Breaches of this policy will result in disciplinary action. Remember: No student is to use or bring aerosol deodorants or sprays to school. Roll-on and stick deodorants are permitted at school. Thank you for considering the health and safety of others.

UNIFORM GUIDE

Burnside State High School is a progressive and socially responsible school maximising

student learning outcomes and preparing young people to become active citizens in a global

society. Burnside State High School is a uniform school because the Parents and Citizens

Association, representing the parents of the school, has decided to support the wearing of a

school uniform.

The Minister for Education has stated that the advantages of wearing school uniforms include

“developing a sense of belonging to a group, pride in membership of that group and

identification of students to and from school”. Research has also shown that there is a clear

link between dress standards, school discipline, school spirit and community perceptions of

the school in general.

It is our policy that the correct school uniform is worn each day and we urge all parents to

support the accepted standard of dress as detailed in this brochure. The Burnside State High

School uniform can only be purchased from the school uniform shop.

DLH NEWS

Term 3 is progressing well as everything returns to the “new normal”. The Subject Expo night has been the highlight for the term so far with an excellent turnout, despite the cold and despite COVID. Many parents from all year levels and Year 7 prospective parents had a very informative night. The DLH displayed all the many forms of support on offer for our students and the variety of subjects that students who are on an Individual Education Plan or Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement pathway in Senior might like to be involved in future years.

DLH gardens are now producing and we sold some lovely Herb posies to the teachers this term. All money raised goes directly back into buying more seeds and seedlings for our program.

Students grew Grass Heads and recorded growth rate of grass in different environments, which produced some interesting results. The ‘edible flowers’ garden section is growing well. Did you know that nasturtium flowers are very tasty? Students also planted pineapples which is a long term project as a pineapple will take a couple of years to produce fruit. Hopefully, they will get to enjoy the fruits of their labour before they finish school!

National Tree Day was on July 31 and we planted more veggies and reflected on our lovely citrus trees.

LEARNING SUPPORT—TERM 3 2020

This term we are working with new and returning students in Learning Support for help with classwork/homework and assessment.

We have a dedicated reading corner with comfy seats and we are looking forward to getting a book shelf to display books.

We are open before school and at recess to any students needing help with their school work (Room SSB). When students have time off school they may struggle to catch up. These students need to catch up on missed school work including assignment and tests.

Parents can find information about upcoming assignments and homework in student diaries. This is a great way for teachers to communicate with parents also. A good study routine at home will give students the best chance of success at school. Setting aside 30 minutes to do homework, go over class notes or read will help students improve focus and concentration. Homework reinforces learning taught during the day improves self-discipline which is a key life skill.

2020 EARLY SCHOOL LEAVERS SURVEY

The Queensland Government is seeking the support of the school community for the annual survey of Year 10, 11 and 12 students who left school in 2019, before completing Year 12. This short, confidential survey collects information about what young people are doing the year after leaving school. The results of the survey help provide valuable information to improve services available to school leavers in the future.

Between August and September, these school leavers can expect to receive instructions to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the interviewer with their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate. For more information, visit www.qld.gov.au/nextstep/

GUIDANCE NEWS

CAREER PLANNING AND SUBJECT SELECTION FOR YEAR 10 STUDENTS

As mentioned in the previous newsletter, this term our Year 10 students will complete their Senior Education and Training (SET) Plans. The SET Plans will involve students actively working with their parents and school staff to further explore realistic career options and possible learning/training pathways. SET planning culminates with students choosing their Year 11 subjects for 2021.

Information around this important process will continue to be provided to students and parents over the coming weeks, including through the Year 10 into Year 11 Information Session taking place on 26 August. By now you will have hopefully seen the flyer for this.

APPLICATIONS FOR 2021 UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE

Applications for 2021 university places are now able to be made through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC). Year 12 students intending to apply for university entrance in 2021 have met with me individually to discuss their course preferences and the QTAC application process. Different courses in some universities may have early fixed closing dates for applications, but my recommendation for students is that applications should generally be completed before the end of this school term. Changes are still able to be made after this time if needed.

As always feel free to contact me to discuss any of the information highlighted above.

Steve Hutson Guidance Officer

ENGLISH NEWS

On Friday 24 July our Year 12 General English students enjoyed a performance by the Grin and Tonic Theatre Company. The students are studying the Shakespearean tragedy Macbeth in preparation for their external exams. The talented actors wrote and performed Macbeth Reimagined, punctuating each scene with a modern discussion, encouraging students to think deeply about the key

scenes, and how they are performed. This performance enriched their understanding of the play and was an enjoyable way to examine Macbeth.

BSHS MUSIC PROGRAM

Have you ever wanted your child to learn a musical instrument? You never know they could be the next Mozart, Beethoven or Kanye West!!!!

There are still spots available for the Queensland Education instrumental program. We offer Strings, Clarinet, Flute, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, French Horn, Electric Bass and Percussion and all for a really small fee! The percussion program in particular allows students to learn a variety of instruments. We have two passionate and experienced teachers in Mr Larkin who teaches band and Mr Pattri who teaches strings. Lessons are half an hour a week and band is in the morning once a week. Lessons rotate so students don't miss the same class each week.

If you are interested, feel free to contact the school.

BURNSIDE HIGH INDUSTRIAL SKILLS (ISK)

Year 11 (Industrial Skills) ISK students are working steadily towards building their skill levels to the point where they can commence building the Vans RV-12 kit aircraft with confidence in their ability to tackle the build and complete it to a high standard.

Sport Aircraft Association of Australia’s Youth Aircraft Build and Fly Program has Burnside building the tail cone, Horizontal and vertical stabiliser, rudder and elevator of the Vans RV-12. The kit has finally arrived at the school after being stuck in transport from the US.

Year 12 ISK students are working on the school build Zenith 701, they are in the process of manufacturing the many structural parts ready for assembly. We have four groups, one on the wings, one group on the horizontal stabiliser, one on the vertical stabiliser and one on the fuselage. Student are learning many new skills around all things aviation. Students are looking forward to the point where the assembly starts.

Both projects are being supported from SAAA members John, Graeme, Victor, Glenn and Bob. The school is very appreciative of knowledge and time these gentlemen are investing in the students here at Burnside SHS.

CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE SCHEME

STUDENTS AND STAFF WORKING TO HELP THE P&C

At the Athletics Carnival, students very generously donated approximately 500 empty drink containers to our orange bags, which were warmly received. Several staff often carry orange bags during their playground duties in order to reduce the number of recyclables going into landfill.

Since the scheme’s inception in late 2018, our school community has recycled 5468

containers through the scheme, raising more than $546.00 for our P&C. Students are encouraged to continue to use the frog bin in front of the canteen to recycle their containers, or the blue wheelie bin in front of the library. Every donation adds up! Any students who are interested in forming an Environmental Club at our school should please come and express their interest with Mrs Reilly in the large MP staffroom.
