Todos sabemos que a fragilidade socioeconómica é, hoje em dia, a principal fonte de rutura do contrato democrático para além de problemas de ordem diversa que provoca, direta ou indiretamen-te, no equilíbrio dos ecossistemas. Quanto mais mergulharmos na urgência dos proble-mas do presente, negligenciado a configuração do nosso futuro comunitário, menos valor estaremos a atribuir à ideia de projeto, como proposta para o longo prazo. A melhor forma de, num contexto insular com as nossas características, defender os interesses das gerações atuais e futuras preservando, ao mesmo tempo, a exploração racional dos recursos naturais, a proteção das espécies da nossa flora e fauna, a biodiversidade insular e aspetos específicos do nosso património cultural e identitário seria abraçar um projeto de autoconfiguração que incluísse todos os membros da nossa comunidade insular. Foi sobre estes pressupostos que nasceu a ideia, posteriormente materializada, de inserção do Príncipe na rede Bios, há sensivelmente, ano e meio, como parte de um projeto global mais ambicioso comportando o longo prazo.De facto, é velha a ideia, retratada por Hannah Arendt, de que “os seres humanos ligados por um projeto concertado têm superioridade em relação àqueles que nenhuma promessa liga e que care-cem de intenção. A rede de Biosfera é, inevitavelmente, uma marca que tem crescido desde o seu processo inaugural e, para nós, parte integrante desta família universal, imbuída de um mesmo propósito, é o principal instrumento para algo mais poderoso. Dai a pertinência e importância desta newsletter para o cumprimento do propósito de divulgação do PRÍNCIPE, como parte integrante desta marca, provido de identidade e objetivos próprios. Neste âmbito não posso deixar de me associar, como Presidente do Governo Regional, com todo o carinho e orgulho, neste primeiro número desta iniciativa. Para todos que, com o seu empenho, inteligência e dedicação, criaram as condições para a conce-ção e realização deste projeto editorial aproveito a ocasião para exprimir os meus sinceros agradeci-mentos e desejar a sorte principesca para a consoli-dação do mesmo.
We are all aware that the socio-economic frailty is, nowadays, the main source of breach of the democratic contract, not to mention all kinds of problems that directly or indirectly creates in the ecosystems’ balance. The more we plunge into the urgency of the problems of today, neglecting the making of our common future, the lesser value we will be assig-ning to the idea of a project as a long term proposi-tion. In an insular context with the characteristics of ours, the best way to defend the interests of existing and future generations whilst at the same time preserving the rational exploitation of natural resources, the protection of species of our flora and fauna, insular biodiversity and specific aspects of our cultural heritage and identity, would be to embrace a self-configuration project which would include all members of our insular community. It was on these assumptions that the idea was born, and later on accomplished, to have Príncipe as part of the REDBios, roughly now for a year and a half, as part of a global and more ambitious long term project.In fact it is an old idea depicted by Hannah Arendt that “humans bonded by a concerted project are superior to the ones that are not bonded by a promise and are lacking of intention. The Biosphere network is inevitably a brand that evolved since its early stages and for us, part of this universal family, steeped with a common purpose, is the key instrument for something more powerful. Hence the relevance and importance of this newsletter to accomplish the purpose of divulging PRÍNCIPE as part of this brand, provided with identity and own objectives. In this context I cannot help myself from adhering, as President of the Regional Government, with all the affection and pride, to this first number of this initiative. To all those whom with their commitment, intelligen-ce and dedication, created the conditions for the conception and execution of this editorial project, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude and wish them a principean luck for its consolidation.

Em Maio de 2009, as reservas da Biosfera de Menorca e Jeju decidiram criar a Rede Mundial de Reservas da Biosfera em Ilhas e Zonas Costeiras. Ambas as reservas, apoiadas pelo Secretariado do MAB da UNESCO suportam então o funciona-mento desta rede que visa, entre outros:- Apoiar os estados Membros da UNESCO na implementação das recomendações do 3º Congresso Mundial de Reservas da Biosfera, Madrid, Espanha 2008;- Identificar estratégias nacionais para a protec-ção da biodiversidade em reservas da biosfera e áreas semelhantes;- Apoiar a transferência de conhecimento e tecnologia e cooperar na formação especializa-da em gestão de recursos naturais em reservas da Biosfera e transferência de dados entre estas;- Organizar reuniões sub-regionais e globais;- Promover projectos de investigações envolven-do reservas se diferentes áreas geográficas da rede mundial.Em Maio de 2013, precisamente na Ilha do Príncipe, realizou-se a XI reunião da Rede REDBIOS no âmbito da Rede Mundial de Reser-vas da Biosfera em Ilhas e Zonas Costeiras. Foi nesta ocasião que tivemos o prazer e honra de entregar o Diploma da Reserva Mundial da Biosfera do Príncipe como um novo membro desta família de lugares especiais onde as gentes e natureza convivem de forma sustentável.
In May 2009, Menorca and Jeju’s Biosphere Reserves decided to create a World Netwoork of Biosphere Reserves in Islands and Coastal Areas. Both Reserves, together with UNESCO’s MaB Secretariat, support the operation of this network which intends to, amongst other things:- Support countries that are part of UNESCO in implementing the recommendations of the 3rd World Congress of Biosphere Reserves, Madrid, Spain 2008;- Identify national strategies to protect biodiversi-ty in biosphere reserves and similar areas;- Support the transfer of know-how and technolo-gy and cooperate in specialized training for management of natural resources in Biosphere Reserves and data transfer amongst them;- Organize sub-regional and global meetings;- Promote research projects involving reserves of different geographical areas of the world network.In May 2013, precisely in the Island of Principe, the XI Meeting of the REDBIOS Network, was held, within the scope of the World Network of Biosphe-re Reserves in Islands and Coastal Areas. It was in that occasion that we had the honour and privilege of awarding the Diploma of the World Biosphere Reserve of Principe as a new member of this family of special places where people and nature coexist in a sustainable manner.

“Em Setembro de 2013, a Reser-va Mundial da Biosfera da UNESCO da Ilha do Príncipe as-segurou a sua primeira partici-pação na Assembleia Geral da Rede Africana de Reservas da Biosfera da UNESCO – AfriMaB”Em paralelo com a Assembleia Geral do AfriMaB, teve lugar uma Conferência subordinada ao tema: “ O papel dos serviços ecossistémicos na promoção da economia verde em Reservas da Biosfera Africanas”. A participação da Reserva da Biosfera do Príncipe em ambos os eventos teve como resultados a aprovação formal, e por unanimida-de, do Príncipe como membro da rede AfriMAB, uma apresentação técnica e divulgativa sobre a reserva da Biosfera do Príncipe e a aprovação da realização de um evento da UNESCO/Afri-MaB, a ter lugar no segundo semestre de 2014, precisamente na Ilha do Príncipe, sobre a temá-tica da Economia Verde no âmbito das Reservas da Biosfera.

Simultaneously a Conference was held on “The role of eco-systemic services in the promotion of a green economy in African Biosphere Reserves”. The participation of Principe’s Biosphere Reserve in both events resulted on a unanimous formal approval of Príncipe as a member of AfriMAB’s network, a technical and informative presenta-tion on Principe’s Biosphere Reserve and the approval to carry out an UNESCO/AfriMaB’s event, to be held on the second half of 2014, precisely on the Island of Príncipe, to discuss Green Economy on the scope of Biosphere Reserves.

O mesmo fenómeno celeste que em 1919 ligou a ilha do Príncipe à História da Ciência, em 2013, tornou o Príncipe o palco de um evento científi-co. Durante um mês promoveram-se campanhas de sensibilização para uma observação segura e informada do eclipse solar, dirigidas à sociedade civil.Paralelamente, presencial e via skype, debate-ram-se, entre cientistas e o grande público, temas como Relatividade Geral, Astronomia e História das Ciências. A Meteorologia, Agricultu-ra, ou Biosfera foram alvo de reflexão em sessões dinamizadas por individualidades e investigado-res (inter)nacionais. No dia 3 de Novembro mais de cinco centenas de curiosos distribuíram-se pelos locais devida-mente equipados, Roça Sundy e Praça Marcelo da Veiga, para a observação do eclipse. A programação culminou no dia mundial da Ciência pela Paz e pelo Desenvolvimento.

The same cosmic phenomenon that in 1919 linked the Island of Principe to the History of Science, has made Principe, in 2013, the centre stage of a scientific event. Awareness campaigns for a safe and informed observation of the solar eclipse targeting civil society were carried out in the month prior to the Eclipse.Simultaneously, face to face and Skype debates on General Relativity, Astronomy and Science History were held between scientists and the public in general. Meteorology, Agriculture or the Biosphere were also focus of attention in sessions streamlined by both national and international individualities and researchers. On November 3 over five hundred people distri-buted themselves through the properly equipped sites, Roça Sundy and Square Marcelo da Veiga, to observe the Eclipse. The program ended in the World Science Day for Peace and Development.

O Bom Bom Island Resort, na ilha do Príncipe, é o primeiro hotel do continente africano a obter a certificação Biosphere Responsible Tourism, atribuída pelo Instituto de Turismo Responsável (ITR), entidade internacional independente, membro do Conselho Global para o Turismo Sustentável (GSTC) e da Organização Mundial de Turismo (UNWTO).Os trabalhos de preparação para esta certificação duraram cerca de um ano e meio, período em que foram realizados investimentos financeiros e de formação profis-sional, no âmbito do turismo responsável, que envolveram colaboradores, fornecedores e clientes do Bom Bom Island Resort. Ao longo deste processo foram consideradas todas as vertentes da gestão ambiental, desde o modo de utilização da água, da energia e dos resídu-os, à conservação e promoção da natureza, do património, da arquitectura e da cultura local.

Bom Bom Island Resort, located on Príncipe Island, is the first hotel in Africa to earn the Biosphere Responsible Tourism certification, awarded by the Institute for Responsible Tourism” (IRT), an international independent organization - member of both the Global Council for Sustaina-ble Tourism (GCST) and the World Tourism Organi-zation (UNWTO).This certification took a period of one and a half years to obtain during which major financial investments took place, as well as vocational training within the scope of sustainable tourism of the Bom Bom Island Resort's employees and suppliers. Through this process, all aspects of environmental management were taken into consideration - from the use of water, energy and waste to the preservation and promotion of nature, heritage, architecture and local culture.

Reduzir o uso do plástico, sensibilizar para a redução e reutilização de resíduos, disponibilizar água potável e contribuir de um modo geral para a consciencialização ecológica dos habi-tantes e visitantes da Ilha do Príncipe são os objectivos do Projecto Water & Recycle, lança-do em Dezembro de 2013 pela Reserva Mundial da Biosfera da lha do Príncipe.O conceito do projecto é simples e assenta na troca de 50 garrafas de plástico, por 1 garrafa reutilizável em aço inoxidável, designada por “Biosphere bottle” que pode ser abastecida em fontes de água potável disponibilizadas para o efeito. Nesta primeira fase estão instaladas já 5 fontes de água potável, 4 em Santo António do Prínci-pe (Governo Regional, Centro Cultural, Sede da HBD e no Bom Bom Island Resort) e uma em São Tomé no Omali Lodge Boutique Hotel.

Reduce the usage of plastic, create awareness for the reduction and waste reuse, make potable water available and contribute in a general manner for the ecological consciousness of all population and tourists of the Island of Principe are the goals of the Water & Recycle Project, launched in December 2013 by the World Biosphere Reserve of the Island of Principe.The concept behind the project is simple and based in the exchange of 50 plastic bottles for a refillable one in stainless steel, designated as the “Biosphere bottle” which can be refilled at potable water dispensers made available for that purpose. In this first phase, 5 dispensers of drinking water have already been installed, 4 in Santo António of Príncipe (Regional Government, Cultural Centre, HBD Head Offices and at Bom Bom Island Resort) and 1 in São Tomé at the Omali Lodge Boutique Hotel.

A conservação e monitorização das tartarugas marinhas nas principais praias de desova tem vindo a ser realizada desde 2012 pela ONG portuguesa ATM (Associação Tartarugas Mari-nhas – www.tartarugasmarinhas.pt), em estreita parceria com o Parque Natural do Príncipe e o grupo local Comissão Tartaruga Marinha (um grupo de ex-caçadores de tartarugas), com o financiamento da HBD e do Bom Bom Island Resort. Com acções de protecção directa das fêmeas e ninhos nas praias, e fiscalização no mar, tem sido possível, desde o ano passado, contabilizar mais de 500 ninhos, 35.000 filhotes, identificar mais de 100 fêmeas individuais, e reduzir dramaticamente a captura de tartarugas marinhas tanto nas praias como no mar. O trabalho passa também pela forte presença nas escolas, formação de guardas e guias locais e de actividades de sensibilização nas comunida-des, assim como apoio a estudos de carácter científico que visam aprofundar o conhecimento sobre as diferentes espécies.

Since 2012 preservation and monitoring of marine turtles on the main nesting beaches is being performed by a Portuguese NGO called ATM (Associação Tartarugas Marinhas - www.tar-tarugasmarinhas.pt), in close partnership with the Principe Natural Park and the local group “Co-missão Tartaruga Marinha” (a group of ex turtle hunters), with funding from HBD and Bom Bom Island Resort. With actions of direct protection to females, nests on the beaches and sea monito-ring it has been possible, since last year to account for more than 500 nests and 35,000 calves, identify more than 100 individual females and dramatically reduce sea turtle capture both at the beaches and at sea. The work also invol-ves a strong presence in schools, training of guards and local guides and awareness activities in the local communities, as well supporting scientific studies that aim at increasing knowled-ge of the different species.
