Dear Families.

We say goodbye this week to Jodie Long who finishes work this Friday, and to Claire McAdie who finished work a few days ago. This is such an exciting time for both Claire and Jodie and we wish both ladies well with the birth of their children and hope to see mums and bubs at school soon.

We circulated a letter this week about the appropriate ages for children to be using various applications for social media. It would be good for our children if we adhered to these expectations for the cyber safety of everyone involved

Like every other school in Victoria, St Aloysius has to comply with the Child Safe Standards outlined below by August 1 as part of a State Government expectation. With the leadership of our Child Protection Officer, Donna Bryce, we are confident of being fully compliant by this date: The child safe standards are as follows: In complying with the child safe standards an applicable entity to which the standards apply must include the following principles as part of their response to each standard:

promoting the cultural safety of Aboriginal children

promoting the cultural safety of children from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds

promoting the safety of children with a disability.

To create and maintain a child safe organisation, an applicable entity to which the standards apply must have:

Standard 1: Strategies to embed an organisational culture of child safety, including through effective leadership arrangements.

Standard 2: A child safe policy or statement of commitment to child safety.

Standard 3: A code of conduct that establishes clear expectations for appropriate behaviour with children.

Standard 4: Screening, supervision, training and other human resources practices that reduce the risk of child abuse by new and existing personnel.

Standard 5: Processes for responding to and reporting suspected child abuse.

Standard 6: Strategies to identify and reduce or remove risks of child abuse.

Standard 7: Strategies to promote the participation and empowerment of children.

Tomorrow, Thursday 26 May we are having a Princess & Punk Day to highlight the needs of one of our Year 1 students and raise some funds necessary for her support and treatment. The beautiful Stella May has some serious medical needs and we are supporting her family by raising these funds.

The Ballarat Diocese is celebrating Catholic Education Week, 20 – 27 May. On Friday 27 May we are having a shared activity day with St James and Lumen Christi Schools so our children can meet and mix with other children attending the other 2 schools in our Parish. The day should be a great way to celebrate this week!

On Sunday, 10 July we have the opportunity to run a BBQ at Bunnings. We would love someone who can coordinate this event as a fund raiser for our school. Is there a dad out there perhaps who cannot help our school during the week, but can do something over a weekend? Enquires conact Susan Clark on 0419 383 442.

Have a great week everyone, Joe

Dear Parents,

Are we Ripon St Primary with a few crosses hanging around the corridors??? If not, what does it mean to claim we are a Catholic School in 2016?

If these and other such questions about our school identity have ever entered your mind, then our upcoming Catholic Identity Forum is for you! You may or may not recall completing an extensive online survey circulated by the Catholic Education Office, Ballarat (CEOB) about 18 months ago which was looking to gather data on our school community’s Catholic identity. Well, the results are in and parents are invited to attend an information evening that will both present the findings and open up discussion on what these mean for our school community. Mr John Meneely from CEOB has kindly agreed be our guest presenter for the evening. John has had extensive experience with such data and will be well equipped to answer our questions as well as guide us through the process of discerning its relevance for our school’s future planning. On behalf of the SAC, I warmly invite all our Parents and Guardians to this evening. It is going to be a great opportunity to hear where we are at in terms of our identity while also being a forum for discussion about where we wish to head in the future. Best wishes, Annnette Hirth SAC Chair

JUNIOR NEWS

Welcome to week 7! Sadly this is Ms Long’s last week before she begins this exciting new chapter in her life. We wish her all the best and thank her for her commitment and support this year.

We will be heading to St James Primary School on Friday to participate in the Catholic Education Week shared activities. Please remember to sign and return all permission notes to school. Last Friday the children participated in their first session with the pre-service teachers from ACU. It was fantastic to see the students involved and enjoying themselves. A request for all Foundation children to please wear their sports uniforms on Tuesdays and Fridays. As the term is coming to an end we are beginning to compile our Learning Journals, please return all Learning Journals to school this week so we can complete these for your child. We hope you have a fantastic week! The Foundation Team.

It was so fantastic to see the children overcome some of their reservations during the swimming program and they had a great time. Thank you to all of the helpers who were able to assist us in the change rooms to get the children in and out so quickly. Just a few reminders as follows:

We still have children who have not returned their Learning Journals. We need them back ASAP. Friday we are heading to St James as part of our Catholic Education Week celebration. Children need a

water bottle and their morning snack in a disposable bag. Permission notes to be returned. We are looking forward to tomorrows Fundraiser for Stella May. Please remember to send your

envelope back with your children. Also, if the children are wishing to have their hair done or nails etc they will need to bring a couple of gold coins. Won't it be great to see everyone making a special effort for their fellow classmate. Remember, things from around home would be just as good for dressing up.

Please continue to encourage your child to be reading each night and practising their spelling for testing each Monday morning. (Congratulations to those who are doing a great job at this already).

On behalf of the Grade 1/2 unit we wish all of the children celebrating their First Eucharist this weekend all the very best. Thanks Bev, Savior and Shay.

MIDDLE NEWS

Greetings, everyone. Lots of testing again this week with Pat R, Pat M and On Demand. Students are becoming very competent at completing all the assessments as required. In Language we are still looking at persuasive text and narrative writing. In OLSEL we have been using big books which assist with our learning about our Asian neighbours and unpacking vocabulary, using synonyms and antonyms, discussing word meanings and creating sentences which include facts from the Asian country studied. An urgent request for Learning Journals to be returned to school please.

Best wishes and keep warm. Jo, Anne and Kelvin

SENIOR NEWS

Welcome to week 7 in the seniors. We would like to say a well done to all of our football players who gave it their best at the Catholic School Lightning Premiership last week.

This week in class we will continue to work on our persuasive reading and writing. We have also been busy creating our own travel booklets for our Inquiry. Towards the end of this term we will be holding an Inquiry Expo where the children will get to present their work to their families. We will send home invitations as soon as we have finalised a date.

This week in maths we have been busy exploring the concepts of area, perimeter, capacity and volume. Weather permitting, we will participate in the inter-school sports on Friday. This week we will play Villa.

We are still collecting tin cans. If you have any clean cans, with the labels removed please pass these onto Ms Byron. They will be used in the near future for a fundraising activity.

Grade 5 students have a transition day to St Patrick’s College and Loreto College on Tuesday the 31st of May. Permission forms have been sent out this week and will need to be signed and returned. Enjoy your week - June, Katherine and Tamara.

NETBALL NEWS Our Year 3/4 netball team had another successful game this week coming out on top against Urquhart Park. Well done to all the girls you are playing very well as a team and we are very proud of the effort you all put in every week. Just a reminder there will be training on Friday this week. See you then, Louise and Aileen

FOOTBALL - CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOLS LIGHTNING PREMIERSHIP Last Friday 29 students from St Aloysius ventured to the St Patrick's College Main Oval to participate in the Catholic Primary Schools Lightning Premiership. We played four games and each game was divided into 2 x 10 minute halves. Each participant played in at least 3 halves excepting the Grade 6 players who played the whole of each game as was their right as senior students. The opposition were much taller but that did not dampen the enthusiasm or courage of the St Aloysius team who improved as each game progressed. We were kept scoreless until the very last game but when we did make our first score you would have thought that all the players had just won a free Big Mac meal because they cheered, danced and performed cartwheels such was their excitement. I will not name any individual players but I would like to congratulate the 29 players for their enthusiasm and endeavour.

I also would like to thank Richard Alsop (father of Harry and Ted), and Grant Possingham (father of Justin) for assisting with the coaching duties. And many thanks to staff members Danielle McCann, Kaitlin Hare and Kim Bott for braving the elements to assist with supervision. Kelvin

Tuckshop – Yes, Tuckshop will be running this week - Friday 27th. Pie Drive – Order forms for our school Pie Drive fundraiser were sent home to families yesterday.

Save the Date - Friday, July 22nd - Comedy Night, (book your babysitter) Save the Date - Sunday, Sept 11th - Regent Movie Fundraiser ‘Kids Movie - family social event’. Save the Date - Friday, October 28th. We are planning an evening market for our school and are seeking

expressions of interest from stall holders within our school community. If you are interested in holding a stall or would like more information please call Emma Donald on Phone 0402 221 162.

P & F meeting - Our next meeting date is Tuesday, 21 June. Please feel free to come along as we welcome all input from our school community.

All items for sale can be left at the school office. We also accept donations of clean outgrown uniform items as these come in handy for spares during winter.
