PRAHLAD KAKKAR

Founder, Genesis Film Productions

"For a change, don’t wake up and erase your dreams, remember

them."

Prahlad Kakkar (born 24 March 1950 in Mumbai) is a leading Indian ad film

director, best known for his work on the famous Pepsi TV commercial with

Amitabh Bachchan and Sachin Tendulkar. He is the founder and main

director for Genesis Film Productions, one of India's leading production

houses, established in 1977.

He is renowned for his candid and outspoken nature. An avid scuba diver, in 1995 he set up 'Lacadives', a scuba-diving

school, along with his wife Mitali Kakar at Kadmat Island, in collaboration with the Govt. of Lakshadweep. He also runs a

coffee shop, and Casa Amore, a wine bar and restaurant, set up in Mumbai in 2001. Early life:

Prahlad Kakar grew up in Mumbai and his father was an army colonel based in Pakistan. His mother is half Burmese and

half Marathi. He also did his initial schooling from St. Joseph's Academy, Dehradun. In 1966, he passed out from Sainik

School, Kunjpura, Karnal, Haryana and 1970, he graduated with Economics (Honors) from Fergusson College, Pune.

Brief Profile:

With over 30 years of experience in the ruthless advertising industry, Prahlad Kakkar remains ahead of his ilk by

constantly reinventing himself and converting his interests into business opportunities. From his humble beginnings as an

Accounts Executive at an ad firm, 'ASP' (Delhi) in 1971, he went on to learn the tricks of the trade from one of India's

finest filmmakers, Shyam Benegal. It did not take him much time to establish himself as one of the pioneers of television

advertising in India, as he launched Genesis Film Production Pvt. Ltd. In 1977, one of India's leading production houses.

Coming from Sainik School, Karnal, Indian Army was meant to be his calling but an imperfect eyesight prevented this. He

soon found his niche in advertising, branding and communication and became a much sought after ad film maker. With

huge brands like Pepsi, Nestle and Britannia knocking at his doors, Prahlad Kakkar carefully worked towards strengthening

his own brand image.

To be able to feel the pulse of the audience and to "tell a story in 30 secs in the most engaging way possible" makes the job

of an ad filmmaker very difficult. But not the one to be bogged down by the challenge, Prahlad struck a chord with his

audiences-both Indian and international with his brand of irreverent humour. He has helped create memorable ad

campaigns for brands like Pepsi "yehi hai right choice baby! Aha", Britannia "ting tingti ting", Limca "Zor ka Jhatka" and

many others. The ad for Pepsi featuring Amitabh Bachchan and Sachin Tendulkar in the 90s remain fresh in the memories

of the people till today.

Not the one to remain stagnant, Prahlad believes in living large and has mixed his interests with sharp entrepreneurial

acumen to successfully launch a coffee shop, Casa Amora, a restaurant in Mumbai (2001) and a speciality Tea House in

Mumbai, the first of its kind in India. An avid scuba diver, he set up 'Lacadives', a scuba diving school in Lakshadweep and

is the co-founder of Reef Watch Marine Conservation, which aims at creating marine-life awareness. Besides looking after

his creative and business interests, he also trains youngsters and is invited to share his experiences by premier Management

Institutes all over the world, thus giving back to the society.

An indomitable zest for life, a colourful persona and ounces of wit and humour define his personality. He never let dyslexia

become a stumbling block in his life. He was not brilliant in academics but that did not stop him from pursuing his dreams.

Fondly referred to as the 'madman' of the advertising world, Prahladcontinues to live life on his own terms and make the

most of every moment.

The ability and courage to pursue his interests and turn them into profitable ventures is what every person must learn from

him. He is constantly reinventing himself with changing time and his verve and child-like enthusiasm is an inspiration

especially for youngsters, who find it hard to match up to him.
