Dear Families of Yarra Glen PS, Welcome to another great week of learning as we settle in to our routines and studying. As I go around the classrooms, I have been pleased to see students enjoying their classroom libraries and using their CAFÉ reading strategies. Staffing Mrs. DiGiacomo will continue her leave until the end of term. I am sure you will join with me in wishing her a speedy recovery. I will continue to take the role of Acting Principal until then and look forward to everyone’s support. Mrs. Meredith Richardson is also extending her leave until March 5th and we also wish her well. Mrs. Tabone continues to recover from her surgery and we expect to see her back on Monday full of her usual cheer and optimism. Communication: It was a pleasure to read the year level newsletters that have now gone out to families. The common elements were homework, communication, nude food and restorative practices at each level. Have you seen some of the great photos posted on the school web page? School Council: Our School Council elections are underway. The Yarra Glen learning community is made up of families, staff and students who work and learn together with the support of the wider community. Ballot papers will go home on Monday for our 2018 candidates. Our candidates are: Lloyd Agnew – father of Lincoln in Foundation and Mason in Grade 2. Greg Chrisp- father of Mia in Grade 2 and Thomas in Grade 4. Sommer Gloury – mother of Emmi-Mae in Grade 3 and Sam in Grade 4. Rebecca Holland – mother of Ben in Foundation and Sam in Grade 2. Sylvie Polge – mother of Margaux in Grade 1. Vanessa Wood – mother of Annie in Grade 1. Please watch out for your envelope which will come home with the oldest child and return it by the following Monday. Thank you for your support in this worthwhile process. Curriculum Day: School Council have approved Tuesday, March 13th as our Curriculum Day. We welcome Sharee Gaiser, our guest speaker. She has a strong background in literacy and will be presenting Writing Strategies and build on the work of the Yarra Glen Design Team [which includes Kath Pitt, Tash Owen, the Regional School Improvement Leader, Coralee Pratt and District Education Improvement Leader, Nicole Rheumer]. This is a pupil free day and follows the Labour Day long weekend. Annual Implementation Plan: Our AIP is now approved by the Department and by School Council. Here is a summary of what will be driving teacher practice this year as part of the Yarra Glen PS 5 year Strategic Plan:
Main focus for 2018: Literacy and Numeracy growth, High Impact Teaching Strategies, Community Engagement.
GOAL ONE – Literacy and Numeracy - To improve individual student learning outcomes in literacy & numeracy.

all opportunities available to them.

have missed over one years
education!

GOAL TWO – Increase community involvement To increase community involvement in achieving the school's vision
On the window: Growing Resilient Kids; Talking Teens; Dads Matter.
School Leaders: Perri Pals. What are they? At the beginning of the school year, our student leaders impressed me with their ideas and willingness to support other students across the school. Together, with their teachers, we have come up with the idea of “Perri Pals”. These pals are our student leaders who will take it in turns to wear the “Perri Pal” vests in the yard. Students who are looking for friendships or want some support, can approach their “Perri Pals” in the yard. Each Tuesday, the school leaders work on strategies and support for leadership, including building resilience, restorative practices and what it means to be an upstander rather than a bystander. More of this in upcoming newsletters.
150th – meeting tomorrow for our first committee meeting. Please note we will meet just after drop off time at 9:15am in the BER building. Looking forward to seeing you there. There has been much excitement so far.
Student Well-Being: I often refer to Michael Grose’s articles when writing my newsletter column. His blogs are always informative and wise. You can find his blog articles here: https://www.parentingideas.com.au/blog/ Of particular interest to me at this time of year are:
7 ways to make a sensational start to the beginning of the school year. There are some great tips here.
6 skill sets that help kids succeed [friendship, organising, optimism, coping, relaxation and relationship skills].
Moving beyond cyber safety for happy, resilient digital kids. Michael Grose says, “Parents and teachers need to move way beyond keeping kids safe to looking at ways for kids to be smart and savvy users in the digital space.” This is an informative article for bopping with digital incidents.
Supporting our local community: Thank you to Ritchies IGA – Yarra Glen for their continued support through the community benefit card program. A percentage of everything that you spend is donated back to Yarra Glen Primary School through this program. If you haven’t registered for this program, please come up to the office and register to get your Ritchies IGA Community Benefit Card. Of course, you can also register in store. I’ve heard they have the best roast pork crackling this week. Yummo! Thank you for supporting us, Yarra Glen IGA. Car Park Safety Please be mindful of safety when parking your car or dropping or picking up students. I have had several concerned families speak to me about Forest St in particular and the speed of cars whilst walking their children to and from school. Let’s all keep a watch out for our kids. Cheers, Mary Moore Acting Principal Answer to last week’s question: The tango was a brief opportunity for me in Argentina. I lived there for 3 months with a local family whilst undertaking a teaching assignment with University trainee English teachers and supporting English at the Primary and Secondary school, which was all one building. Classes rotated to fit everyone in. Question for your family for this week [and I can only answer yes or no, so think carefully]. Where did Ms. Moore visit Santa Claus? Answer next week. Can you guess before then?
