The 51st annual ISNA Conference was unique in some ways. It was the first time that the largest gathering of Muslim Americans was held in Detroit. It was the first ISNA to host a US president (former President Jimmy Carter). It was also a demonstration of the sheer commitment, coordination and superb organization of the Detroit planning committee, a group of tireless workers whose vision and efforts confirmed what most who live here already know: this is, Alhamdulillah, a very special community. But while the conference had its exceptional highlights at the local level, it also exposed the continuing, systemic challenges still facing some of our largest national organizations and their leadership.

ISNA 2014 began with great promise. Attendees of the opening session heard welcoming remarks from Governor Rick Snyder, which showed promise given that it is an election year and so many politicians avoid Muslims like the plague. Yet, Snyder’s overtures of Michigan hospitality and gubernatorial validation quickly soured with his unnecessary admonishment that Israel had a right to defend itself. This patronizing finger-wagging was offensive and implied that the audience somehow disagreed with this concept, requiring a governor, with nearly no foreign policy authority, to school the crowd. As if such humiliation was not enough, some in the crowd actually applauded, as if to indicate their guilt. It took days, not minutes, for ISNA’s leadership to offer any statement of protest to such an insult.

Despite the Detroit area being home to one of the country’s most ethnically, racially and denominationally diverse Muslim communities, ISNA was woefully neglectful in promoting such inclusion for the conference. Entire Muslim groups- Bosnians, Turks, West Africans and African American Muslims, not to mention the Shia community- were poorly represented. Groups feel included if they feel that programming and the list of speakers are ones to whom they can relate. The absence of diversity in ISNA’s conference schedule directly correlated and led to the lack of diversity in the crowd. It should come hardly as a surprise that people stayed away from a conference that they felt was as relevant to them as a Baptist convention. Despite the local committee’s explanation of Detroit’s demographic variety and the unique opportunity available to showcase it at this year’s conference, such efforts apparently fell on deaf ears.

Abraham Inspires Muslims, Christians and Jews- Sr. Asma Mobin-Uddin

    reprinted with permission by www.islamicity.com

In the current climate, I hesitate to tell people that the biggest holiday of the Muslim year celebrates the Prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son at God's command. I worry that people will associate the observance with the political situations we are seeing and will miss the profound beauty and strength of the story. Told in both the Bible and the Quran, the episode is revered by Jews, Christians and Muslims, who all honor Abraham's example of righteousness and faith.

God tested Abraham by commanding him to sacrifice his only son. Out of devotion and obedience, Abraham was willing to do so. Before the deed could take place, a ram was substituted for sacrifice instead of the boy. The lesson in this great trial of Abraham's is that people should love and be faithful to God above everything else in their lives.

Some are uncomfortable with this story because of the reference to child sacrifice. Others spend time arguing over which son it was. Both miss the point. Of course God does not want us to kill our children. Both the Bible and the Quran are clear that the purpose of the event was to test Abraham's devotion to God, not to condone a human sacrifice. And which son it was is irrelevant.

The prophets throughout the ages have taught this same message of faithfulness as the most important imperative in worshipping God. "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might," Moses urged his followers (Deuteronomy 6:5). Jesus reaffirmed the same message, saying, "This is the first and greatest commandment" (Matthew 22:37-38). A prayer from the Quran reads, "Truly my prayer, my sacrifice, my living, and my dying are all for God, the Cherisher of the worlds" (Qur'an 6:162).

The Prophet Muhammad taught that the most important belief in Islam is that nothing is worthy of worship, nothing is deserving of one's complete love, devotion and obedience, except for God.Whatever we love of the gifts God has given us, these gifts should not be more important to us than their source. If they are, then we have strayed. And many such "idols" compete for our time and attention. Our devotion to pursuing material wants, riches, fame, desires, or even leisure activities can border on worship. But Abraham's example reminds us what should be most important in our lives.

During the Hajj pilgrimage and the Eid al-Adha holiday, Muslims commemorate the history of the Prophet Abraham and his family. This year, these events take place during the last week of December.

Pilgrims in Mecca retrace Abraham's footsteps and rededicate themselves to following his example. As part of the Eid celebrations, Muslims have a sheep, camel or goat slaughtered, share part of the meat with family and friends in holiday meals, and donate at least one third of the meat to the poor. The symbolism of the sacrifice commemorates the trial of Abraham.

Devotion to God is the purpose of the sacrifice, not the actual meat or animal killed. Sharing holiday meals strengthens ties of family and friends, and donating the meat helps remind Muslims of their responsibilities to people in need. Food banks in America have reported an increase in fresh meat donations as Muslims donate to the poor the meat from this commemoration.

Muslims return from the Hajj with a renewed closeness and commitment to God. They recommit to loving and serving God above all else, with all their hearts, souls and minds, because nothing else is worthy of this devotion.

The opportunities for reflection and rededication to one's priorities are part of the many holidays celebrated this season. As we choose our paths, we have a tremendous example in the firm and sure footsteps of the great Prophet Abraham, the true in faith, the friend of God.Dr. Asma Mobin-Uddin is a pediatrician and past president of the Ohio chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Her children's book, The Best Eid Holiday Ever, was published in the fall of 2007 and is about the Eid al-Adha holiday.

    Community News

As awful as the governor’s “instructional” may have been, and as tragic as it was to miss the golden opportunity to have a truly diverse conference, the ugliest incident at ISNA 2014 occurred during a session on bridging the Sunni-Shia divide. While panelists provided a very thoughtful, measured and practical approach to understanding sectarian conflicts, some in the audience demonstrated their arrogance and /abject lack of adab, despite being so-called “community leaders.” One individual, an otherwise well respected and founding member of a local community, berated a religious leader and dominated the question/answer time, with no regard for anyone else seeking to engage with the scholars or for the example his shameful display would have on others in the audience, especially the young. Such is “leadership” for some in the community.

The Oxford based scholar, Tariq Ramadan, publicly announced that he would be absent from ISNA 2014, citing his serious issues with leadership as the reason. While many questioned his motives and also his tactics, the debate that Ramadan’s letter precipitated on social media and among American Muslims is important. There is nothing un-Islamic or disloyal in questioning leadership and seeking its improvement, particularly when it purports to represent the community. Having good intentions are appreciated, but should not be regarded as a substitute for performance or immunity from constructive criticism.

MATH CLASS RETURNS!The math class for next academic year will begin Saturday, September 6th at 10am to 12pm. The donation of $150 per student to IAGD will be collected.

The community may note that this will be 17th year of this program. Numerous conscientious students have benefited and have moved forward towards pursuing their intended careers successfully. Last couple years the enrollment has been woefully low and those who did join were not responsibly regular causing hardship for the volunteer coaches who had to wait for hours hoping someone would show up. The parents should be cognizant of this and bring the student on time. In case of emergency, please call and let us know.

In a comparative study our program has proven higher success rate for the modern motivational psychology method we use. Our method of one - on - one coaching and making learning fun has motivated the student to excel. Finally we volunteer our time so you, the student can achieve excellence. Obviously it is up to you and your parents to decide what is best for your advancement.

  • September Monthly Dinner Sponsors

May Allah (SWT) bless all the sponsors and volunteers and reward them for their generosity and dedication to His cause.

    Ameen.

Interested in Sponsoring an IAGD Monthly Dinner?IAGD has a monthly dinner on the first Saturday of every month, unless otherwise notified. The purpose of the dinner is to give everyone an opportunity to meet and socialize with other Muslims in the community and to make new friends with those who have recently moved into the area. So please reserve the first Saturday of each month for this worthy cause and a great opportunity to meet fellow Muslims in the community.

Please avoid scheduling personal parties or other special events on the first Saturday so that everyone can attend the dinners at IAGD. The sponsors cover the cost of the food. All contributions collected at the dinner are tax-deductible donations to IAGD. Please consider sponsoring a dinner. For further information please contact Br. Mohammad Mazhar @ 248-413-1446.
