PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE - Dr Darren Egberts

NEWSLETTER 7 March 2019

Today’s prayer reinforces this week as the start of the liturgical season of Lent; a time where we prepare ourselves for the Church’s most important time, the Easter Triduum of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and the vigil of Easter Saturday. Given the challenges that the Catholic Church has confronted in the last couple of weeks and in the years that preceded these, the Lenten season provides an opportune and critical time for all in ministry to reflect this Christian sacrifice. Prayer

Dear Lord, In this Lenten time, give us opportunities for repentance,

forgiveness, of others but also of ourselves. Let us never forget the very real and human suffering that

Jesus undertook willingly for us. Not only the physical pain of his death but also the scourge

of denial and the loneliness of being abandoned by those who professed to love and follow him. We make this prayer in his name,

Other Student and Staff Activities The number of co-curricular activities occupying students and staff outside the classroom:

Our 131 Year 7 students have each enjoyed three fabulous days at Kinglake on their Year 7 Camp. I visited both camps and was impressed by the way students embraced the challenges of the activities with courage and a positive determination. When not on camp, students participated in a Reflection Day which took them across Kyneton retracing the stories of the College’s founding Sisters of Mercy.

On Monday and Thursday, the College hosted more than 150 Year 5 students from across our local feeder parish primary schools. The students were treated to a range of engaging and exciting activities including Science, Food Technology, PE, a school tour and time in the College Chapel.

Yours in Mercy,

Dr Darren Egberts

WINTER UNIFORM Winter is coming, and with it the wearing of winter uniform. This will be the first year that the entire College will be in the new uniform, and now is the time to either check your winter items from last year to make sure they fit, or to purchase new items if required. Over the past few years, the College has been involved in developing a sustainability group that identifies and monitors areas for energy saving around the College. Heating has been one such area whereby a common sense approach has been adopted. During winter, which as we know in Kyneton is particularly cold, classroom heating is a must. Students need to be comfortable and the College has excellent heating throughout. The Green Group has however, identified that from an energy efficient perspective, having the temperature too high is not only costly, but is not good modelling of sustainable living to our students. They also identified that one of the reasons for the high room temperatures has been students not wearing warm enough clothes. The boys’ winter dress code is long pants, and from this winter, we will be expecting these to be worn. They are inexpensive and hard wearing, and standard Secondary school clothing. They are an item that signifies growing up, and accustoms students to life past school. The past year has been a year of reviewing the wearing of the new uniform. A suggestion by students that we will be adopting is the wearing of the optional blue jacket. Previously this has been limited to outside at school, not in class. Students find them warm and comfortable, many in preference to a jumper, and will now be able to wear them inside and out if they wish. This is also a common sense response to the Green Group’s findings. All items may be purchased at the Uniform Shop, and Lay-By is available.

Uniform - Mrs Carmel Walsh (Uniform Manager) Year 7 Students - If you have not received a letter with an Invoice attached for your winter uniform, please come to have your fitting at the Uniform Shop. If you have received an invoice, orders can be collected upon payment. New Students in Years 8-12 - If you are a new student to the College please make sure your Winter uniform has been ordered. If not please come to the Uniform Shop to be fitted.

MUSIC NOTES - Terry Carrick

On Wednesday 13 March 2019, the Music Department will host a special event: our annual Ensemble Workshop Day. All students enrolled in the Instrumental Music Program will be involved in these activities due to their (mandatory) required participation in at least one College ensemble. Please note that every student at Sacred Heart College is very welcome to participate in an ensemble, whether they are learning an instrument or not. During the first part of the day (periods 1-3), students will work within their respective College ensembles to further hone their skills of playing or singing in a musical group. During period 4, ensembles will present a performance showcasing their new-found skills and repertoire, in the Theatre. This concert is a wonderful opportunity for the students to see and hear their peers perform and reflect upon their own performance skills. If students have not already done so, they should register for their preferred ensemble by using an online form at www.tinyurl.com/ensembles2019 Students should wear full school uniform and attend their usual Homeroom assembly before moving to the Music Room for a short briefing. They will then move to their ensemble workshops in the following venues:

Choir – Chapel (with Mrs Duggan and Ms Clarke)

Show Band – Theatre (with Ms Gill and Ms Morris)

Guitar Ensembles – Hall (with Mr Roberts and Mr Duggan)

Percussion Ensemble – Music Room (with Mr Rousch)

String Ensemble – Practice Room 3 (with Mr Vyhnal) Whilst this event takes place during the day, I encourage parents to attend this concert. It will start at 2:05pm in the Mary Moloney Theatre and parent need to sign in at the College’s General Reception.

LEADER OF PEDAGOGY – Faye Quinn Sacred Heart College on the ‘move’-University of Melbourne Network of Schools (UMNOS) At Sacred Heart College, we are in partnership with the University of Melbourne to provide growth for our students who have different learning needs in their academic studies. Sacred Heart Students’ Reflections Over the past two weeks, 22 French students have been staying with multiple families from both Year 11 and Year 12. They have been travelling with their host student on the bus and attending classes, as well as taking trips into the city to see the Victoria Market and Eureka Tower, and visiting places such as Sovereign Hill and Ballarat Wildlife Park. The French students also went with the host families on a trip over the weekend to beaches such as Lorne and to Philip Island. They also enjoyed the beautiful scenery that we have here in the Macedon ranges, which included trips to local attractions such as Hanging Rock, the Memorial Cross and other bush walks. For the students learning French at Sacred Heart, this has been a fabulous opportunity to practise their French speaking, and for the French exchange students it has been an exciting way to experience a foreign country and see plenty of kangaroos. We have all formed friendships that will last a lifetime and it has been a fun and rewarding experience for everyone involved. Hannah Cooper & Lily Davidson

The French exchange program this year has been an extremely enjoyable experience, and taught my fellow students and I many new things on top of hospitality, courage and of course a bit of French. Two weeks ago, our exchange students arrived at Sacred Heart, following a trip to Singapore and Sydney. As expected, they were quite tired and many went straight home to relax. Relaxation became a scarce memory however, as their absolutely jam- packed schedules had them completely occupied nearly every moment of every day! They travelled around the state to places such as Melbourne and Ballarat, and followed their hosts from class to class. The first weekend, many of us were very busy, meeting some friendly animals, shopping and having a game of bowling. The next weekend, however, many of us went our separate ways, touring the Macedon Ranges or, in my case a quick and ‘temperate’ trip to one of Australia’s many pristine beaches. Of course, like all good things, the exciting trip came to a unforgettable end. Seamus

French Students’ Reflections

“My experience in Australia was amazing! I enjoyed my days at school because it’s really different than my school. I liked the classes where I’ve been. And of course all the Australian culture, the landscapes, and the kangaroos and koalas. I’ve learnt so much and it was a great opportunity to perfectionate my English. I hope to come back here! ” Elina RAVON

“I lived my best life here! To live an experience like this is a chance that not everybody can live. I spent such good times here. Discovered so many things like the landscapes, the school, the culture… The school here is so different from our but I enjoyed it so much. After that, we will be change, we will grow up. We had learnt so much here for our life or our English. I really want to come back here and see all these amazing people.” Nolwenn RELET

“That was the best trip I’ve ever had. In Australia, I met new people and make new friends. My penfriend was the best and I hope that our friendship will survive to the distance. Maybe one time I will come back to Australia and see him again.” Baptiste CAILLE

Abigail Bradbury, Positive Education Leader

The benefits of kindness Last weekend, my husband and I took our teenage daughter to an animal refuge (where they raise and release native animals who have lost their mothers, usually due to them having been killed on the road). We have all been very tired of late, with the beginning of the new school year, among other things. The thought of a full day of fence building in the heat really wasn’t what we felt like doing, but we had committed ourselves and so we went. We weren’t expecting the joy that helping others brought us. Despite being hot and tired, despite our aching limbs and sore hands, we felt like we had actually made a difference, albeit a small one. We felt more energised that evening than we have in weeks and we really enjoyed spending time together as a family to achieve a common goal. We experienced so many positive emotions as a result of our hard work. We cuddled joeys and fed them. We had a few laughs when a goat tried to eat my husband’s hat. We made some new friends, human and animal. We realised that volunteering our time to help others wasn’t just benefitting the animal refuge, it also made us better. In addition, we were setting a good example to our daughter on so many levels, and what’s more, it was contagious; we want to do more! Studies show that the very act of giving back to the community boosts your happiness, health, and sense of wellbeing. We certainly experienced that last weekend.
