Principal’s message Illawarra Junior Vocal Ensemble During the last week of Term 3, I had the pleasure of seeing Bella, Chela, Isabel and Kayla perform in the 2018 Festival of Choral Music’s ‘Endeavour Concert’ at the Opera House. Earlier this year, these talented singers were selected as part of the Illawarra Junior Vocal Ensemble. With rehearsals and many performances, including the opening of Operation Art, the girls have managed their commitments with dedication and maturity. As all the girls leave our school this year for high school, we wish them well in their vocal endeavours. Congratulations, Bella, Chela, Isabel and Kayla! Parent / Child Learning Conversations Thank you to the parents of the 105 children who came to our Term 3 Learning Conversations. As I moved around the rooms, there were lots of proud parents who were impressed with the growth their children have made since Term 1 and Term 2. Learning conversations are about the child sharing their successes and goals with their parents. To ensure continued growth, students received their Feedack to Parents this week. The activities in this report are specifically tailored to move each child forward in literacy and numeracy. While this part of homework is optional (reading and spelling are compulsory), children are encouraged to complete as many activities as possible so they can achieve their learning goals more quickly. Enjoy your week! Rhonda Morton

Term 3 Week 9

What’s happening in … 2M?

If you’re wondering what’s been happening in 2M,

that’s what I am here to tell you. For the past few

days we have returned from our holidays, feeling

pumped and maybe just a little bit tired. Some of our

Term 3 highlights included:

Our Bulli Museum Excursion to learn about

the Bulli coal mining disaster.

We also had an excursion to the Botanic

Gardens for our Science topic Light and Sound.

Our writing focus has been informative

texts. We have also been writing to our Pen Pal class

3/4M and Miss Mayo from Griffith Public school.

We have been studying the artworks of

Claude Monet. You can see our waterlilies in the

Office.

Term 3 was a very busy time and we are all very

excited for Term 4. A lot of maths has been going on,

so our class is definitely ready for Year 3. We are all

looking forward to another exciting adventure, but

there are still a lot of things we are curious about.

Our reading has improved and so has our maths. 2M

has been a great class so far and we will be sad to

leave when it is time. This class is very special to all of

us.

SRC Jersey Day ‘Buy a Bale’ Fundraiser The SRC has organised a mufti-day with gold coin donation for this Friday, 19 October to raise funds to support our farmers through the Buy a Bale initiative. Students are permitted to wear a sporting jersey or the colours of their favourite sporting team. Joggers are essential as Friday is also sport day. A gold note was sent home last Monday.

Selective High School 2020 Applications for selective high school placement in Year 7 in 2020 close on 12 November 2018. Applications are made at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7 The Selective High School Placement Test is on Thursday 14 March 2019. An intention to apply letter and information about applying for Year 7 entry to selective high schools in

2020 accompany today’s newsletter.

Talented Writer’s Camp As I’m sure many of you are aware, at Bulli Public School we aim to provide as many opportunties for our students to showcase and develop their talents. Late last term, Ava, Bella, Chela, Nia and Tessa attended the State Writer’s Camp held in Windsor. This group of talented writers has gone from strength to strength over the years, with their writing now quite sophisiticated for primary school students. Well done!!

Religious & Ethics Education for 2018 At this time of the year we commence our planning for Special Religious Education (Scripture), Special Education in Ethics and non-attenders classes for 2019.

At Bulli Public School, we offer Protestant and Catholic religious education for all students. If you wish to alter your child’s current status, either to opt in or out of Special Religious Education, please inform the office in writing by Friday 9 November.

If your child is currently listed to attend Special Education in Ethics, please be advised that teachers are yet to be organised for all grades/stages in 2019. Both teachers and a coordinator are required for 2019 to enable Ethics to run at the school. If we are able to conduct an Ethics program in 2019, students who have withdrawn from Religious Education but are not listed to attend Ethics will be given the option to attend.

Please be advised that in accordance with the Department’s Procedurues, students who do not attend either Religious Edcuation or Ethics (if available), are not to receive academic instruction or complete formal school activities during this time. They are to be supervised by teachers and are permitted to read or complete individual study including homework.

K-2 Fixed Playground Equipment At long last, the Department has approved our fixed playground equipment for the K-2 playground. Thank you to all the children who selected the elements and the colour scheme – a ‘big thumbs’ was given by K-2 to the design. The equipment will be installed between the bathrooms and the hill so there will still be plenty of room for more active games. We are very grateful to the P&C who have raised $25 000 for this project with the school meeting the balance. The equipment has been ordered and is expected to be installed before the end of the term – fingers crossed!

SkoolBag App Update SkoolBag have been working on various improvements based on user feedback. They are aware of a small number of iPhone users having issues accessing the new SkoolBag App. This can be caused by having larger font sizes enabled on your device. If you are experiencing issues, please temporarily switch off this setting by following these steps: On your Apple Device > Settings > General > Accessibility > Larger Text - OFF. Then try to open the SkoolBag app and log in. In the upcoming update, the SkoolBag App will support larger font sizes.

School Website You may have noticed a new look for our school’s website. The Department has switched us to a new platform that is more suitable for viewing the website on mobile devices. Some documents were lost in the process, and we are currently working with the Department to retrieve these. The switch over is still occurring, so we thank you for your patience during this time.

KidzWish Christmas Party update Parents of children who were invited to this year’s KidzWish party are advised that we have been placed on a waiting list for this year’s party. Despite our application being sent in well before the due date, the popularity of this event has increased significantly over the years. If we are to attend, parents will receive a separate note / reminder.

Fruit & Veg Month 2018 Parent Survey Our school has been involved in Fruit & Veg Month 2018. Many thanks to Bulli Fruit and Deli for their donation of a huge box of fruit and vegetables. There was so much that not only 1/2S, the winning class, enjoyed their fruit and vegies, but also second place, KC! Please thank Bulli Fruit and Deli next time you are in there!

The program managers, Healthy Kids Association, are seeking feedback from parents/carers about the program to help with future planning.

Please take some time to fill out this short survey – https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/fruitandvegmonth2018parentsurvey

The survey should take no longer than 15 minutes to complete. As an incentive, a $20 gift voucher is available for the first 70 eligible responses from across the state.

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact Healthy Kids Association on 02 9876 1300 or 1300 724 850.

Thank you. Natalie Patterson Fruit & Veg Month School Coordinator

150th Anniversary – School Song As part of our 150

th Anniversary celebrations for 2019, we

would love to introduce a new school song. (Perhaps you didn’t know we had an old one.) If you have some ideas for the content of the song or would like to pen two verses and a chorus, please send them into the office before the end of term. You don’t need to able to write music, we have lots of composers at hand.

Parenting Insights from Michael Grose ‘Help kids develop impulse control ’ from Michael Grose has

been sent on our Skoolbag App and will be added to the

Parenting Insights News Story on our website. Articles

from Parenting Insights are also displayed in our community

window and in a folder in the foyer. The School subscribes

to these articles for the wellbeing of our community.

Friendly Kids Friendly Classrooms The social skill for home discussion this fortnight is…

POSITIVE TRACKING Look for the good things is the way to succeed

Dos * Look for all the good things you do and say them to yourself either in your head or out loud. * Look for the good things that other people do and say them out loud. * Look for the good things that happen in your life, however small, and say them to yourself and out loud. When bad things happen to you, try and look for, and say out loud one good thing that was part of it.

Don’ts * Don’t put yourself down by looking for, and saying bad things about yourself. * Don’t put others down by looking for, and saying bad things about them. Try to be positive rather than critical. * Don’t grizzle, whinge, whine or complain about the bad things that happen in your life. Look for a positive and focus on it.
