NEWSLETTER MARCH 2014 The Finlay family at Gli-don, Mullaley have been long time Goodwin Kenny customers dating back to the mid 1960’s. Don Finlay saw the opportunity to supply wheat stubble as feed as the drought took hold and needed loader tractors, hay rakes and a baler. Negotiations saw the Finlays take possession of two new New Holland TD5.110 tractors with Challenge loaders, a New Holland BR7060 round baler and two 11 wheel in-line Tonutti hay rakes. The tractors are a good match to the round baler which has been working overtime as feed demand has increased in the last month. From reports Don is more than happy with the simple operation of the machinery. Pictures show the TD5.110, Don with the other TD5.110 and BR7060 ready for more action and Tonutti rake with round bales in the paddock. Tom & Michelle Cutcliffe at Nemingha were frustrated by the unreliability of their old Case small square baler and having to borrow a neighbour’s baler to finish, so Tom and Michelle decided to upgrade to a new BC5060 New Holland baler. Also key in the decision was access to Goodwin Kenny Hay technician Merv Leard’s skills to set up the baler and “tweak” it for Tom and Michelle to produce the very best bales they can. A hydraulic swing kit was added to make the change from baling to travel positions. The light kit, fitted standard, helps to see what is going into the pickup and how the stack on the accumulator is forming while still being useful to inspect the knotters should anything go amiss. Pictured at delivery is Goodwin Kenny Salesman Tony Housden, Tom Cutcliffe and Goodwin Kenny Hay Technician Merv Leard. Leon De Groot of “Waterford”, Gunnedah has recently taken delivery of a new Great Plains Simba Xpress speed disc. This 22 disc unit covers 3.0 metres and front and rear gangs are independently adjustable by a simple winder mechanism for aggression of cut, infinitely variable from zero through 25 degrees to provide a suitable setting for cultivating or planting in previously worked or virgin soils. Each disc is independently mounted on a heavy duty spring tine allowing discs to follow ground contours with travel distance of 120 mm. Being linkage mounted the Simba Xpress is extremely manoeuvrable for those tight spots around trees and in irregular shaped blocks and the cage style crumble roller packs the tilled soil leaving a nice herringbone finish. Leon contracted Goodwin Kenny to fit a Davimac small seeds box with increased capacity hopper [180 litre], and driven by the crumble roller, to the Simba Xpress, creating a unique planting/cultivating machine which can be utilised as a precision planter, primary and secondary disc cultivator as well as being the ideal mechanical control for non-productive weed species such as Lippia, burrs and thistles. Over the past few weeks Leon has tried this unit in a variety of situations and is delighted with the results. The Finlay family at Gli-don, Mullaley have been long time Goodwin Kenny customers dating back to the mid 1960’s. Negotiations saw the Finlays take possession of two new New Holland TD5.110 tractors with Challenge loaders, a New Holland BR7060 round baler and two 11 wheel in-line Tonutti hay rakes. With a need to spray and the desire to do it easier, Bob Johnston at Loomberah has upgraded from his 400 litre sprayer to an 800 litre Silvan Pasture Pack Linkage Boomspray with an 8 metre nozzle protected boom and 14 litre Foam Marker. Bob also has some steeper/rougher country and for this the sprayer has been fitted with a 2 sided Boomless nozzle kit, leaving the main boom folded up for protection, the boomless nozzles can cover up to 9 metre with no risk of boom damage. The Silvan Pasture pack range uses the proven Comet brand diaphragm pump, 2 stage filtering, quality Tecomec/GEOline control valve and nozzle bodies. The Pasture Pack also incorporates

a 15 litre fresh water tank for hand washing and rinsing nozzles etc., fully adjustable boom height, adjustable hitch height and a spot spray hose reel and gun. Bob is pictured at right looking pretty pleased with his new purchase.

Robert Sinclair at Quambone had a win while helping out on his uncle’s newly acquired neighbouring property – quite a few tonne of pit silage was found, the only problem - no way to get it out! The Challenge Spiked Silage Grab was chosen because of its ability to handle silage that was put down in varying ways – baled or chopped and has a capacity of ¾ m³. The silage, while having some spoilage, has been well liked by the sheep and cattle.

Tillage and Seeder Maintenance In the last few weeks we have seen an increase in sales of tillage points and have noticed dirt being scratched up in some parts of the district, therefore, it might be opportune to mention some of the maintenance issues you need to consider. Check the frame and hitch bolts on your machine – are they tight? if the tines are bolted to the frame, check they have not come loose and started to move around. Check the frame and mountings for cracks - we have seen 1 set of discs with the bearing hanger broken off and another that has been cracked for some time – welding required. Check the tine pivots, springs and/or hydraulic rams for worn surfaces, out of alignment or other damage. Offset discs, check that bearings are not too worn, can you get grease into the bearings properly? Is the main gang bolt tight? Do not allow discs to wear down too far. Do not allow points to wear too excessively – this can lead to lost points that can stake tyres later on, additional wear on tines and areas of ground that are not cultivated properly. Hydraulic hoses and rams – check for leaks and damage. Please remember to use safety stands or blocks before you crawl under the machine. Remember to grease your machine before storing it for any period of time. An hour or two checking over the machine could save you many hours of paddock breakdown.

A little bit of history:

Goodwin Kenny sold and serviced CLAAS from 1963 to 1967 and one of

the first Claas header purchasers was the Finlay family from Gli-don at

Mullaley. Don Finlay recalls that they paid 6,400 pounds for the Matador

Giant and that the Bank Manager chastised his father for spending so

much money. I am sure the Bank Manager was not the one doing the

harvesting, and if he was he would have appreciated the technology and

update in methods, and it makes you wonder what he would think of today’s combine harvesters.

On leaving Don’s property after delivering the new Tractors, Baler and Rakes (see the front page) Peter Kenny

spied a “Blast from the Past” in a Morris 43 Tyne Chisel Plow. This Series 5 machine was assembled by Don and his

father and it was done in the yard at Mullaley Road in 1971—apparently, according to Don, Pat Kenny did not have

the time or the manpower to put it together during this busy time of the year so the Finlays undertook the job

themselves to get it done so they could use it!! Peter Kenny tells me that he and his brothers, Mark and Mick, when

they commenced their apprenticeships in 1979 built many similar machines under the gum tree at Mullaley Road.

Just to keep you up to date:

- Keith McPhie from our Armidale branch has just had Heart Surgery and his wife Carleen informs me that he has

come through the surgery well. While Keith is away the Armidale branch is open for business as usual and is being

capably manned by Peter Mackay, so if you need parts call in to Armidale. We wish Keith a speedy recovery.

- WorkCover NSW Rebate Program expires 30th April 2014—under the category of Working Safely with

Tractors rebates can be obtained for Rollover Protective Structures (ROPS), Runover prevention solutions—side

access steps and platforms, Power take off (PTO) guards for tractor attachments.

For more details go to workcover.nsw.gov.au or call 13 10 50

- The Australian Government Whitepaper on Agricultural Competiveness submissions close 17th April 2014—if you

would like to know more or make comments to the government go to: agriculturalcompetiveness.dpmc.gov.au

- Walcha Show is on March 8th and 9th.

- Parking at Tamworth still seems a bit confusing for our customers. Customers can park in the

Loading Zone while they are purchasing parts or visiting our office—this is legal, Parking on the

Footpath is illegal and also dangerous. If you have a trailer behind your vehicle there is limited

off-street parking— if unsure please ask, we will be happy to help. ---- On a lighter note On a lighter note On a lighter note On a lighter note ———— A new study has found that women with large backsides live longer A new study has found that women with large backsides live longer A new study has found that women with large backsides live longer A new study has found that women with large backsides live longer

Why Seniors still need newspapers

I was visiting my daughter last night when I asked if I could borrow a newspaper.

"This is the 21st century," she said. “We don't waste money on newspapers.

Here, use my iPad."

I can tell you this. That fly never knew what hit him!!
