STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT Congratulations to Madeleine Trudel (Yr 12) and Rachel Kemp (Yr 10) who have their photographic work featured in the 'Exposed Perceptions' Exhibition which opened last Friday night at the Horsham Regional Art Gallery. A wonderful achievement for both girls. MARGARET SIMONDS BURSARIES These bursaries honour the memory of Margaret Simonds and we give recognition to her visionary work in the adult educational field. The late Margaret Simonds was the founder of On Track Learning in the late 1980s and she established a network of local literacy coordinators around the region to provide volunteer tutors to literacy students. Margaret possessed the following qualities and attributes: Faith, Leadership, Innovation, Inner strength, Vision, Perseverance, Communication, Lateral thinking, Humour and Enterprise. The recipients of these bursaries will possess and demonstrate these attributes and qualities. Margaret Simonds bursaries cover tuition fees to the value of $1000 for students enrolled at St Brigid’s for the 2018 year. These bursaries are available to any currently enrolled student from Year 7 through to Year 11 in 2017 except those students who have received these bursaries within the last three years. Application forms can be obtained from either the Front Office or on our website under “School Community” and must be returned by Friday, 10 th November. Late applications will not be accepted. A host family is required for a French Exchange student who is currently in Year 9 at St Brigid’s
College. Hugo is here until May 2018 and requires a family from 1st November onwards. Duration
could be short term or whatever you are prepared to offer. If interested please contact the
Front Office .
YEAR 12 2017
Next Wednesday is the final day of classes for Year 12 students and our College community will farewell the graduating class of 2017 at an assembly commencing at 12.20pm. This has traditionally been a very enjoyable event, marking the contribution of our Year 12s over six years to the College community.
The completion of Year 12 can also be a time of significant anxiety for families and school staff. Students have been made well aware that any damage to property, individuals or the reputation of the College will result in seeking another venue for their final examinations and/or exclusion from the final graduation ceremony in December. In speaking to our Year 12 cohort with Mr Lowes, we believe that our Year 12 students will act responsibly and celebrate the culmination of six years of secondary education in a most appropriate fashion.
VET ORIENTATION
Next Wednesday, 1st November students undertaking the first year of a VET course next year will attend an induction day at their respective RTOs. The day will provide an opportunity for students who have enrolled in a course to get a taste of the work and assist them decide whether to proceed with their enrolment. Many thanks to Chris Rook, our VET Co-ordinator for her organisation of the day. I would like to take this opportunity to remind students and parents that VET requires a real commitment because school work will need to be caught up, the cost for one day per week almost matches our annual school fees, and missing one day of VET can place successful completion of the course in jeopardy.
ADVISORY COUNCIL AGM
Copies of the Chairperson’s report, the Education report, the Canonical Administrator’s report and the Finance report presented at last night’s Annual General Advisory Council meeting are available from the Office on request.
REMINDER
Our Parent Information Evening for VCAL 2018 students will be held on Monday, 23rd October commencing at 7.30pm in our Library.
SCHOOL CLOSURE DAY
Advanced warning that Monday, 6th November will be a School Closure day. There will also be no classes on Tuesday, 7th November due to Melbourne Cup Day.

BUS TRAVELLERS—2018
Application for Permission to Travel—Eligible Students forms have been issued to all students last week that travel to/from school on buses. Please ensure that you collect this form from your child, complete and return to our school by next Friday 20th October. Karen Barnes, Bus Coordinator Horsham College will be collecting them the following Monday. If this form is not returned, the assumption is that you no longer require this service in 2018.
On 15 March this year, Jackson Brand was chosen to participate in the Western Bulldogs Leadership Project in conjunction with the Northern Grampians Council, Ararat City Council and Central Grampians LLEN. The program was run by the Western Bulldogs Football Club with the aim to provide an opportunity for future leaders to develop skills that will enable them to make a difference in the community.
The program commenced on 23 March with meetings held on a fortnightly basis, alternating between Stawell and Ararat. A focus camp was held in Melbourne over the last weekend in March where participation groups across Victoria all got together for the first time and worked on a number of initiatives for their own communities. The Western Bulldogs also hosted all participants at Etihad Stadium to watch The Bulldogs beat the Sydney Swans and the group was also privileged to spend time at Whitten Oval, the home of The Bulldogs to get an insight into what it takes to run and manage a football club in the AFL.
A second camp was held in Ballarat in late August which coincided with the first AFL match the Bulldogs played at Mars Stadium. Unfortunately the result did not go their way and Port Adelaide came away winners on the night. Despite the result the camp proved to be an overall success and further enhanced the individual and team skills the participants were developing.
The program culminated with each group presenting their findings and potential community projects to their respective council members during the September school holidays. Jackson’s group looked at some of the issues facing the youth in our communities, particularly focussing on depression, mental health and a sense of belonging. Like all projects it was very well received given its importance and relevance.
At the conclusion of the project, a special awards evening was held in Stawell. All participants were awarded a certificate for all their hard work during the program and Jackson was also awarded the ‘2017 You Inspire Me Award’. This award was voted on by his peers throughout the program for being the person who inspired others to improve themselves, demonstrated care to others, was an integral part of the team and went above and beyond what was required. For this award Jackson was presented with a Western Bulldogs playing Guernsey commemorating his achievement and as the first recipient of this award, will present next year’s winner at the 2018 ceremony.

Congratulations to Anesu Gororo for achieving Level 10 status in Women’s Gymnastics! A reflection of years of dedicated training and hard work. A wonderful achievement Anesu .
